Description Some time ago, Massimo Ferrusi (SIL-VER) sent me a backing track to which I provided melody and lyrics ( http://www.macjams.com/song/30878 ). While noodling about on my acoustic looking for something new, I discovered a nice chord sequence which happened to fit the lyrics from my collab with Massi. It's been sitting in my iTunes for some time now, and I've been unsure about posting it, but with alfalpha's encouragement, here it is. Not much new happening, so thought this was "Crazy Moon II"'s time.
I play everything on this. Loud works :)
Lyrics Crazy Moon
© 2007 Neil Porter

We watched another pastel sky pre-sunset
We lay there looking at a crazy moon
Those are days that are in my mind yet
Those are days that were lost too soon

Look at that
Crazy moon
Take me back
Crazy moon

Words were said, there were words unspoken
Eyes wide open, sight unseen
Hearts were promised, hearts were broken
And all positions in between

Look at that
Crazy moon
Take me back
Crazy moon

Summer days full of expectations
Summer nights in a summer dream
Summer sighs over summer madness
Young love under a crazy moon
Hardware The usual:
Seagull S6 acoustic
Fender Precision Bass
Rode NT3 mic
Silver Star harmonica

Hi Lena!
Thanks so much for your kind comments. Since going back to work a few weeks ago I've had too little time for music (recording, writing and even listening). Crazy Moon was one of the songs where the lyrics came quickly (when I originally wrote them for Massi's great backing), and I really loved the way the words and melody fell so easily into the chords.
Good to see you back at MJ Lena - I'm pleased you were the first to comment.

Crazy moon
Wasn't too sure to begin with, but it's a grower. Really starts to come together when the harmonica comes in. I like the rolling/repetative nature of the backing track and it is indeed a nice chord progression. Lends the song a kind of dreamy atmosphere which works well.

It's a nice lyric, very evocative and suits the track and your voice (which is always excellent & very distinctive). If I were you I'd rework that first line though - the "pre-sunset" bit is a tad clunky and sounds forced. Not that I can think of anything better of course :-)

Enjoyable listen -
Phil

jiguma said 438 days ago
Cheers Phil
Thanks for the visit and listen - I'm so pleased to have something up. It seems like ages since I spent much time here at all. That "rolling feel" you mention is a bit of a trade mark I guess - comes from writing using fingerpicking. I kind of liked "pre-sunset" - the sky here can go all shades from pink to powder blue as the sun sets at certain times of the year - not quite sunset, just before it.
I appreciate your comments Phil - take care.

Good to see you posting
Blimey, that's a big moon in the picture. I have seen it go that colour though, which is quite an experience in itself.

This is really nice, Neil. It has a gentle and persistent rhythm with those tumbling guitar chords, and the lyrics/vocals fit around it very snugly.

It's great to BE posting too. I'm finding the return to work a bit of a challenge, and really hate the way it eats into my musical time ... however, this one from the vaults needed to see the light of day. I have a new one in process with Alf(alpha) which should work out pretty well once Alf throws some strings at it.
Snug is good :)
Thanks for the listen and the comment Rebsie.

Cool song
Interesting drum beat-the guitar sounds great.I like the harmonica.Your vocal delivery is awesome reminds me a little of Eliot Smith.Excellent!

jiguma said 437 days ago
That beat
Cheers Mark - from memory, I think that the drums on this were midi, but it's been a while since i recorded it. Thanks for your comments - I'll check out Elliot Smith.

A new all time fav ..
.. of yours Neil. Sorry, I was slow to comment ..
I was listening to it several times you see, soaking
it up :o)

The production is great - is it mastered with
anything 3rd party I wondered?

I too particularily love the touch the harmonica adds here .. and that change into the chorus/"look at that" ..really sweet. Hard to know where Sil-Ver ended and
you took over - apart from the obvious bass, guitar, harmonica and vocals .. I do like the beat and
organic percussion.

Massimus Jigamus ;o) .. on that note .. here is still the craziest moon I've ever seen... ;o)

jiguma said 437 days ago
In the "O" zone on this :)
That's not slow Alan - I figure there are songs nearly a month old that I'm yet to get to!
Glad you liked this - it's one that makes me glad I decided to take up the harmonica again.
Massi is here in spirit only on this version - the original was a slightly softer SIL-VER into which I dropped these lyrics with a slightly different melody. He does really inspirational backing tracks.
Ah well - enjoy winter :)

Roxylee said 437 days ago
Chord progressions
are perfect for your lyrics, Neil. I love everything in this; the lyrics, vocals, harmonica, percussion, everything works together just right. I hope you get to relive the crazy moon feelings this year.:-)

jiguma said 437 days ago
Thanks ..
.. for the kind comment Roxy. At my age, the "young love under a crazy moon" is probably best left a very pleasant memory "Old love under a crazy moon" perhaps :)
Glad you enjoyed the tune.

just perfect my friend !!

jiguma said 436 days ago
Thanks Feter ..
.. for listening and leaving kind words. The harmonica is a beautiful instrument - easy to play and light to pack in the van :)
Peace,

Ah yes.
That's the one. This is great Neil - I think it's amazing you've created a new tune where there was already an existing one. I'm sure I couldn't do it - I'd be locked into the version I knew.
Love the harmonica playing too. I must try and find my old D blues harp...

jiguma said 436 days ago
Glad you enjoyed it Ross
Posted as a result of the night we had at Alf's.

Hey, between it we can cover D AND A on our harps - I'm after a full set from Santa :)

Hope we get to play together again - maybe I'll draw some chord charts next time. Cheers to Yvette,

Thanks for the listen Len - I plan to get to yours later tonight. I'm playing everything here, including the harmonica. I really love the sound it makes (as well as the fact that it's so easy to play.

Always a treat...
Who dat, jamn' on the percs... - and then, getting all syncopated on the traps - seasoned w/ a suprisingly impressive blow at the harmonica - thoroughly laced w/ a warm and seeminly, stretched WAY out noodling on the g'tar - wrapped tightly w/ the expected brilliance in wrting - creating a pretty lazy good look/see/hear and feel... - A crazy moon seems like from whence it must've come...

Thank you sir, for this morning's sweetness! - It goes well w/ a good first cup of java.

Nice flow...gentle grooves...lovely...uplifting...it's all good here! I especially enjoyed the harmonica sections.

Be well!

nice harp tootin'
Can't remember you using that much harmonica earlier in your songs... But this sounded like you have done that some times before for sure:)

Your steady bass and good acoustic noodling is a winning team. Very good.

Ejh said 436 days ago
I really like this.
It has all the jiguma earmarks, or trademarks, or watermarks. I think it's a really good speaker mix, too; many MacJams tunes, mine included, seem to sound better over headphones, by far, but this one sounds really solid over speakers... a nice, transportable mix...

I really like the blend that you get with acoustic guitar, bass and percussion. The additon of so much harmonica here is just so much more of a good thing...

This one heads straight to the iPod.

I bitterly resent not being able to vote for. And give it high marks that will start arguments.

Ed

jiguma said 436 days ago
Laurels
Upon which I can now rest :)

Thanks for the comment Ed - I always look forward to hearing what you think.

The voting thing finally got to me. I love getting 10s as much as the next MJer, but I know my stuff is way short of "grand artistry", so just don't feel right in accepting such high votes for it (although I always appreciate the sentiment behind them). Anyway, I'm thinking of this as a little experiment to see whether I get a similar number of favs without hovering in the top of the ratings - seems to be working OK so far!

Thansk for listening Ed - this work thing has (as we say down here) knobs on it! Looking forward to being a musician again.

Cheers,
Neil

Doesn't seem that long ago...
but then time has been going by way to fast.

Glad you reconsidered posting this alternative version.
Great production on top of the playing. And dang that's some great harmonica playing. It's all, well.................crazy good.

jiguma said 431 days ago
Time
Cheers Vic - I'm glad time is going fast for other people too. It seems that the more years you put behind you, the quicker the ones in front seem to come around. Glad you enjoyed the harmonica - next time I come back it'll be as a harp player - easier than lugging a bass amp around that's for sure.
Neil

alfalpha said 436 days ago
yup....
Neil, the addition of the harp (harmonica-mouth organ, what you will) adds an extra depth to the original you sent me- I had completely forgotten that you played the harp (I'm certain those '2' glasses of white may have had something to do with that...)

The guitar work here also seems to be more relaxed & 'constant', or 'consistent' if they're the right words, and creates a lovely 'bed' for the the vocal & harp lines- a really, really nice 'balanced' arrangement is what I'm trying to say.

'K then, back to packing boxes- I really needed a break & listening to this makes the chore much less 'choresome', now that I have a nice melody to 'move' to! :)

Cheers Neil!

Alf

p.s. strings coming your way as soon as possible ;)

jiguma said 436 days ago
Thanks Alf
You know that you are the reason this one's here!

No rush with the strings - have a safe and happy move.

Cheers,
