Description A piano quintet which is the second movement to Piano quintet I - Chives posted a few months ago.

I named it after Thomas Ades (pictured above) whose own piano quintet helped me in structuring this piece more as a reference in sound placement, and in instrument technical capabilities than anything else. But I also happen to like what he composes.

There is a third and final movement Piano quintet III - Divase which is also uploaded.

An enjoyable piece....
I enjoyed listening to this movement. The drama really stands out in the instruments and arrangement.

I'll be listening to your other music later today.

Paul.

Thank you Reinholt
It involved more vertical thinking (chords) than I am use to, but I am quite happy with it.

Is it Memorex?
I loved the panning you choose for the string quartet, and it all sounds amazingly real, studio quality. Fabulous recording. In my ears, I wanted the piano closer to the middle of the stereo field, but I liked that you put the cello right to not interfere with the piano left hand. I like the level of reverb and room, it sounds so intimate and human. Stark and skeletal, with the occasional skin of parlor music and pre-jazz. A delight.

Thank you Tobin
For the panning, I listened to Ades's quintet recording, looking for where he placed the piano, and where he placed the cello. Then it was a doodle to figured out where to put the violins and viola fit visually in my head. But you are right the piano could come in closer and more to the centre.

The reverb comes with the samples, so I didn't interfere with it. I did try to add some warmth at the end, but it still sounds a bit cold on my ipod earphones (I'm beginning to trust the little white ipod earphones as the ultimate reference point). There is some noticeable compression on the piano in the loud bits, but I guess that's always going to be a problem with wanting things reasonably loud on a track with some dynamic variations.

Piano
Love the piano work here. You work the different voices deftly, always surprising but maintaining a sense of thoroughly thought out order.

Thanks
Bill

Liking...
the spatiality of the ideation. Vertical musical thinking in post tonal work is so interesting to me. You have created some dandy chords. Stylistically, this reminds me of Third Stream. Most enjoyed.
