Description My brother Will wrote the lyrics - an ode to his wife Melinda. The vocals you hear are stripped off an over blown psychedelic shoe gazer tune I did last weekend. I decided the arrangement was just too much - so I downloaded the vocals and brought them with me to my job in California on my old iBook G3. The rest is all loops and effects created on the flight out and in my hotel room. I miss my instruments - but whatcha gonna do. Hope you like it.
Lyrics I'll print them when I get a chance.

Impressive singin and melody ,indeed its very
thoughtfull .welldone Bud !

bud said 447 days ago
I appreciate the support Feter
I never liked the sound of my voice and sang as little as possible. Lately I'm giving in and pushing more. In this case it started out buried behind a wall of guitars so it was easier for me to let go - then when I stripped it down - I decided to let the vocals be the centerpiece of this new arrangement. I had to trick myself to get here I guess.

Excellent !
very nice work in the musics, the vocal is excellent in this song sir Bud, really good effects you used and fits with the atmosphere of the song ! Thanks for sharing

Strange one
Weird one, bud - kinda 80's electro feel. I love the panning on the fx. I love the vox - very powerful and direct... reminds me of the Thompson Twins (remember them?)

steve

bud said 447 days ago
Weird is right Steve -
I kinda backed my way into this one. Sure I remember the Thompson Twins and Yaz and The Psychedelic Furs and Tuxedomoon. I wasn't singing back then - but I did a lot of recording in that vein with Kevlar from Joan on vocals and guitar.
Thanks for dropping in - when I was singing this I was actually thinking "What would Steve do?"

said 407 days ago
WWSD?
I need to make a T-shirt with that on it... WWSD?

People would stop and ask, and I'd say 'it means "what would Steve do?" And they'd say 'who's Steve?' And I'd say, 'the legendary Echoroom'! And they'd look puzzled, and then David Bowie would open a trap door in the wall, stick his head out (a la Laugh In) and say 'get with it, people!'

And Bowie's wearing a WWSD shirt.

lengold said 447 days ago
Another
surprise - very unusual and creative arrangement, that works. Vocals are sounding great - you should trick yourself more often.
Cheers

Trippy!
Certainly your best vocal delivery to date Bud. I'm glad you're pushing yourself! Great tone, phrasing and effecting...

Very mystical. Doesn't sound like loops at all to me. Just freaky keyboard work...

Bravo!

bud said 447 days ago
Thnaks Michael - your a fine example
of pushing further with each tune.
BTW - your contribution to Vic's Tomorrow Know is stellar. Thanks Man!

spacey
nice.

i like the non 12-tone tones in here (or least it sounds that way)

i like the interplay of the echoes against the flute-like keys thing

thanks

bud said 447 days ago
Thanks Smokey
My tones go to 13!

racerat said 447 days ago

Hey Bud,
I think these are the coolest vocals I have heard from you yet. I think the "trick" you played on yourself worked out well. Keep pushing yourself! Very trance-like and hypnotic.

Philip

bud said 447 days ago
Thanks Philip
I'm digging the way digital music lends itself to oblique strategies.
BTW - I saw Bruce last week. He says hi.

Mcboy said 447 days ago
effective
still retains the psychedelic mood with a modernistic rhythmic underpinning.......i get images of an ancient greek muse transported to the 21st century and singing....nice work...

bud said 446 days ago
Thanks for the comment
I was hoping the connection to the past would be made. I thought this could work as some kind of modern gregorian thing - by accident of course.

whoehaa!
haunting intro. Nice, almost out of tune vocals. I like the awkward feeling it gives me. Kind of end 70s-80s. Enjoyed the track as a total, good echo fx, it helps the track.

bud said 446 days ago
Nice of you to drop by JB
I know what you mean about the vocals - I walk the edge of pitch - not by choice.

I like the end where you let the vocals finish the song. A strong singing arrangement on this. I agree with echo room brought me back to the 80's

bud said 435 days ago
Thanks Tim
sorry it took me while to get back - I always like hearing from you.

Dreamy Quality
YES you have effectively recreated narrative music from a dream and I agree the vocals are excellent up front where they should be. I hear a little Jim Morrison "the goddess I adore" heh way cool in my book, cool song mang!

Vic Holman said 446 days ago
really slick Bud
I'm glad your getting more confident to bring your vocals out. I really like how the smooth melody goes against the hard beat drive to this. Reminds of a bit of The Thompson Twins as well.

A real trip in the effects as well, headphone heaven

willnlf said 446 days ago
Interesting departure
Exotic sound to match exotic lyrics. I think I miss your instruments, too, but some nice effects and good surprises. I like the variety of sounds between verses, the silence after "whisper," and the isolaton of the lyrics at the end. For this one there's maybe too big of a difference between what I heard in my head when I wrote the lyrics and what I hear in your arrangement, but it works better with each listen.

I like...
...the choice of driving rhythm as the base of a love song...very cool, bud...

thoddi said 442 days ago
creative
I can imagine you sitting on your hotel room with headphones on, while the city lights keeps trying to reach you through the window... And also on the flight.... That's cool:)

Putting the vocals from the other song onto this one is a creative idea to come up with...

It's a bit off from what I'd usually listen to, but I bet you had a good time during the flight and in your hotel room:)

Wow, this is very fresh, neat stuff! Love the bed with the recurring staccato synth notes.
Also, interesting about your bio... I, too, jam with a couple of guys twice a week for no apparent reason other than... fun. We have 34 original songs but have no intention of selling them or quitting our day jobs.

Electro Buzzing Echo Humping
I can't believe how an east coast boy like yourself can be so quickly effected by a quick trip to the hippie west coast. I hear the flowers in your mohawk.

I'm really blown away by this. Great song bud.

Psychedelic Shoe Gazer?
I love that phrase... dunno what it means, but I love it.

Marvellous surprises here. I got visions of a dishevelled wino, standing on a sidewalk of a grey, colourless and soulless winter city and singing this while looking at a pretty girl in a hair salon, cheerfully cutting someone's hair and utterly oblivious of the wino on the other side of the glass.

As the wino sings, colour begins to fill out the outside world around him, but in a surreal, fluid way - like watercolours that are still wet. When the delicate bells finally come in, everything is moving and waving with the music - buildings, newspaper boxes, passersby, and it's all very beautiful but vaguely unsettling. Only the window of the salon doesn't change... and eventually, everything fades back to normal, and he's alone on the cold grey sidewalk, watching the pretty girl who doesn't know he's out there.

You've got a wonderfully rich singing voice, Bud - keep singing! It'll only get stronger and more confident with each song.

So what's a psychedelic shoe gazer?

bud said 406 days ago
I still contend that there should be a
separate category or file here for best written comments. You'd be at the top of the fan picks for sure. Thanks for your thoughtful and intriguing interpretation. Seems a man like you should know a thing or two about psychedelic shoe gazing.

Shoegazer was a term given to certain English bands in the late 80's. To quote Wikipedia:

"The British music press (notably NME and Melody Maker) called this genre "shoegazing" because the musicians in these bands often maintained a motionless performing style, standing on stage and staring at the floor while playing their instruments; hence, the idea that they were gazing at their shoes.[1] The shoegazing sound featured extensive use of guitar effects, and indistinguishable vocal melodies that blended into the creative noise of the guitars."

The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine were perhaps the best known recipients of this monicker - and two of my favorite bands.

Psychedelic is psychedelic - and in this instance somewhat redundant.
