Description Sometimes.............. I just like to tune everything out and drain away the mental thoughts. You know, going into the man cave thing.
Lyrics Like A Stone

here alone in a empty room
I hide away from myself
sometimes I need the space
sometimes I'm out of place

chorus:
in this empty room
sitting in a single chair
sometimes I wonder
if anyone is home

sunlight crawls across the wall
cleansing shadows behind my eyes
I sit here like a stone
bearing the weight of my world

chorus:
in this empty room
sitting in a single chair
sometimes I wonder
if anyone is home

when I have no thoughts anymore
I'm still a stone in this chair
are no doubts why I'm here
I'm settled in my rocking chair

chorus:
in this empty room
sitting in a single chair
sometimes I wonder
if anyone is home

I'm like a stone

I wish...
...I could get that acoustic guitar sound that you get - sounds great.

And that's before you get to the Dave Gilmour solo - rockin' man!

Lots of nice psychedelic chord progressions going on here - The Beatles and The Floyd meets an entire 60's record collection. Love the repeated refrain at the end. Like a Rolling Stone, maybe?

Cheers,
Phil

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
a rolling stone gathers no kate moss
Thanks Phil. I record the acoustics direct with a XLR line. That 90 % of the battle right there. I hadn't really thought of it but i guess the solo is a bit Gilmour at that. Must of had rocks in my head not to notice

lengold said 456 days ago
All
the guitars on this sound great, lovely production. Lovely song and well sung. I think this song is a grower - it will get into the brain and stay. Downloaded.
Cheers
Len

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Thanks Len
It's been a while since I did a slower tune. I'm glad you like. I'm always trying to get everything out of my brain.

Thanks again. I appreciate you giving it a listen

KILLER SOLO !
The guitars here are truly great, i LOVED the acoustic, it sounds that the 2nd classic one with the one before !
Very great vocal here, and as always the quality is very very great ! Thanks for sharing .. Loved It !

Take Care

Yeman Auf Al-Rawi

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Thanks Yeman
I'm glad you liked it. I kept the classical bit short just as a set up. I actually had double tracked the solo, but then decided it didn't really need it, but you can hear a little of the second guitar at the beginning and end of the solo

Thanks again Yeman

bud said 456 days ago
Great pacing and production
on this one Vic, the solo/bridge section is fantastic - you're a master of that realm. One day I imagine you composing an instrumental suite of all bridges - one leading to the next. I can identify with the lyrics - but it seems I never get a chance to get to that space - I think I'm just too hyper. Dig the vocals - always distinctive.

Ibstrat said 456 days ago
Really enjoyed
this song. The way the different sections fit together is fantastic. The guitars sound great-the solo fits the song perfectly.Very impressive!

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
thanks Marc
I find the most challenging and rewarding part is figuring out how the pieces can be different but fit together. I figured it was about time to do a slow tune as well.

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
bridge of sighs
Funny, i have had thought of that. string a series of 2 minute songs together.

wait......You already did that. Doh!

Sometimes when I do to much at once, for to long, my brain will crash & need to reboot to remember what I was doing. almost the same thing

guitapick said 456 days ago
Heavy duty...
...what a song. Great lyrics and playing. Production's spot on. Really fine, Vic. I'm a fan...

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Hey Bob
I had the music done and couldn't think of lyrics. Until Dadai posted the Ironies and life forum. It then came to me to just to do a song relating to that. funny how life works out that way.

echoroom said 456 days ago
sounds like
some one is home to mr. psychedelica and inspiration to me. Great track, but especially the vox and backing vox, Vic - truely lovey.

steve

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Hi Steve
well yes someone is actually home, but I just don't answer the phone.

Actually, I think the first verse needs a redo, now that i listened to it again. For what ever I'm going to do with these things in the future.

It did take me some practice to sing quitely for a change. Not that I'm a loud person ... much.

Feter said 455 days ago

Incresdible acoustic sound you do it right here
Vic just another master piece here .the lead with
this awesoem Epi was more than words can describe
I just love it ,perfect mixing and production ..
I will tell you what band on my mind listening to
this song ..KUDOS my friend ..!!

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Thanks Feter
It's been a while since I have done a slow tune. I really enjoyed it myself. A nice way to unwind through music. Now if I could just be a stone basking in the sun on a beach.

Rebsie said 455 days ago
Nice
Great separation of the instruments, so each note occupies its own space in the mix. The acoustic guitar sounds lovely. Nice retro feel but still very much in the here and now. Like it!

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Thanks Rebsie
I keep hearing that retro is always in. I don't know if I'm ahead of the curve or behind it. I try to keep every thing going in to be as close as possible to the final output. less headaches I figure.

michael2 said 455 days ago
nice one
Vic. everything sounds so ggod on this one. i like the repeated gtr intro to the verses, nice that you re-visit it. great song.

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Thanks Michael
I liked playing that short intro piece so much that I had to keep playing it. works as a set up also.

I almost was going to post it without lyrics for open collab but some words came at the last minute. Now, I wonder why I didn't sing about a moose in my yard.

Axgrinder said 455 days ago
The late commenter post!
This is really awesome vic! you have your own uniqueness that is unparalleled in all of MJLand, at least the parts I'm familiar with! I love the guitar and the intro is stuck inside my head for all of eternity (};-P) Nice vocals and great production, am I being to nice?

Ax

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Hey Alvin
I'm glad you stayed!

I only think of myself as a small closet on this site. Cluttered usually.

The intro piece... I was dinking around with for a few days and figured it could lead into a song, so everything revolved around that really.

said 455 days ago
I know this feeling!
Wow Vic. You hit a nerve I think. I love the concept here. Some of your most melodic singing to boot bro. Lovely chord progression and super solo work...I echo the David Gilmour comparison. You're setting the bar for the rest of us ever higher...

Be well!

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Hey Mike
well, it's a no-host bar if anything. I hadn't thought of the Gilmour sound until Phil mentioned it.

When Jack posted the Ironies and life forum post, it got me thinking how I face it.
I can usually be in a loud and crowded place, stare at the wall and drain the brain. my dad use to call me stoney. ha!

I neglected to ask....

Exactly how does one condense an old russian?

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
very carefully
the last thing you want to do is piss him off

In my next life....
I want to come back as your "guitar persona." Dang, you do make it happen with your guitars. I love it.

A great listen here, Vic. I especially like the old russian condenser mike part!

J.

Vic Holman said 455 days ago
Hi Jack
in my next life..... I want to come back as an old russian condenser mike.

Seems the only time I get to play guitar is when I'm recording. They sure do look lonely there on there stands. I hope they don't suffer from mental anguish.

said 455 days ago
One of your Darkest
Vic you take this one deep down into the depths and for that this really stands out lyrically amongst your oeuvre. The chorus is so rock n roll, gotta love it for that alone but you take beyond just that, love the line "like a stone" Ive never heard that phrase and in that context, what a song you have here! really impressed!

Vic Holman said 454 days ago
Hey Tom
yeah it seems kind of dark. It was sort of a meditive state of mind. not only do I have rocks in my head at times but it's dark in there too.

I deserve a lump of coal for christmas as well.

said 455 days ago
wowzer
beautiful job, vic. cooly dark mood to the chord progression - strings were a nice touch to compliment your gorgeous guitar playing. the instrumental solo was fanTAStic - just so tasty! vocal delivery matched the feel of the lyrics perfectly. kudos on your kreation! anne

Vic Holman said 454 days ago
Thanks Anne
There are some pretty off the wall chords in this. most of them I have no clue what the names are. but they fit.

If it was summer still, I might of been motivated to build a rock garden and sit in the middle of it.

Thanks for the listen!

bronco said 454 days ago
Good Sound
Another great Vic arrangement. So many nice sounds swirling around the brain. Loved the pauses and shifting gears from electric to acoustic.

Vic Holman said 454 days ago
Thanks Tom
Everything inside of my head is swirly. The trade off between guitars was a yingy yangy thing to get some different styles going through out.

Thanks for the listen!

rjamadeus said 454 days ago

another great one vic, great writing, singing playing, mix you name it, nothing less that great !!

i'm sure you need to clear your head at times as well. as if life isn't stressful enough, eh?

said 453 days ago
Love This Bro! :-)
The music is so beautiful, contemplative, haunting! Your vocals are beautiful!!! The lyrics are freakin' great. I think it's time to declare a national emergency in the northwest - must be that "Seasonal Affective Disorder" phenomenon - seems to be kicking more than a few people's posteriors. :-) Could you use a little sunshine? There's still some here in VA. :-) I'll send you some. :-)

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
thank ya sis
i was doodling around and came up with the intro piece. i wanted to do a slower tune. and that got the ball rolling. Lyrics is just a statement of getting the mental reigns back into place. it's been pretty busy, i think it has been 3 weeks since my last song.

For the last several days it has been warm and sunny up here and the trees have changed color. pretty nice.

Thanks Carole!

Ejh said 452 days ago
I could just study...
...your guitar tracks... You're getting a really neat acoustic guitar sound at the beginning of this...Stereo, too...

And it's a really nice solo, too...

Ed

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
Thanks Ed
well, there are quite a few tracks, as usual.
I always double track the acoustics and give them a wide spread. Plus, new strings!

The solo was a first take, normally i do several but this one worked. I also harmonized the trill parts at the beginning and end of it.

DWL said 452 days ago
Late to the party
I really like this Vic. I don't know why but I think it's one of your best songs.

Something about it that hits home.

Cheers

Dick

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
Thanks Dick
I couldn't tell you. maybe we both like rocks.

Plus, getting older pretty well puts you in this state. just avoid kidney stones. I hear they hurt.

said 452 days ago
What is it about...
...this that I'm feeling? There's such a crisp clarity to each note, each piece of sound leading to the next as it builds and drifts across a landscape of melencholy. But the emotional reasonance is pure human soul, and that's underlined as the ending voice falls away into a colorless nothing world. Wow.

One of your best, Vic.

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
Thanks Rik
I'm starting to think this is the Vic take on comfortably numb..... without meds.

that might also explain the gilmour inspired solo. that might of a subconscience thing.

thoddi said 452 days ago
Someone is home
Absolutely sweet tune my friend. Great sound, and I like this melody.

Tight and relaxed groove. Beautiful guitars.

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
Thanks Thor
I figured it was time to do a slower paced tune. I had the little intro piece and everything seem to develop around that. True I wanted it to be relaxed but still tight in the tones. I was pretty thrilled how it can together

peacepiano said 452 days ago

Sounds like someone is home to me. Instrumentals are especially evident. I have never heard a stone play guitar this well!!

Thanks
Bill

Vic Holman said 452 days ago
who's there?
Hi Bill.
My dad use to call me stoney as a teenager. So, i guess a stone can play... so to speak. metaphorically of course.

Thanks for the listen

Peter Bauckham said 451 days ago
A slower
song Vic - and an excellent one. Full of those tradmark guitar sounds that are so effective - love your vocals on the fade. This couldn't be anyone else... Great.

Peter

Vic Holman said 451 days ago
Thanks Peter
Yes a slow one was due. And it was easier to let the guitars ring out and sound clean. The fade out vocal I just set the frequency on the high pass filter to conitually go to a higher frequency thinning out the vocal sound, rather then distorting it.

jiguma said 451 days ago
Rich and sweet Vic!
Another good one! Lovely sounds.

well it's taken me over three years of learning to record, to get this far. and I know I still have quite a ways to go. It's always something new.

Thanks for the listen, I appreciate it.

Stoned
For it being an empty room, you really fill up the space with sound : >

I like how you worked in the heavy metaphor "bearing the weight of the world."

The musical and lyrical moods are perfectly united in this existential piece.

Hmm ... if you are a stone sitting in a rocking chair, would that make you a rocking (rather than rolling) stone?

Vic Holman said 449 days ago
Thanks Warren
the room does get crowded when I'm recording a song. cables, guitars, effect pedals. miracle i haven't tripped over everything.

Just a stone who likes to rock, the easy way.

Thanks again Warren.

guitar clinic
you could hold a clinic on how to arrange play and produce guitars... I'd come... I'm beginning to recognize a thumbprint/signiture sound...

I love it

Vic Holman said 449 days ago
Hey Scott
guitar clinic. the tuition would be quite steep, but for you 15% off and a free guitar strap.

Then again I figure if I can do something, then anyone can.

Thanks Scott!

lavalamp said 449 days ago
Great job Vic
Great acoustic sound. As always you come up with such good music. Outstanding production, too.
A common subject, being alone. Many people can relate to that.
Trippy solo.
Dave

Vic Holman said 448 days ago
Thanks David
glad you got into it. The music pulled together pretty fast....then the lyrics, that really took the longest time to figure out what to do.

Any new ones in the works from you?

lavalamp said 448 days ago
yes
I have tons on the way.

The man cave huh ......
luv it ... I gotta say here Vic ... I like the direction your vocals are being taken ... I once heard you say you like to BELT em OUT .... and I am certainly hearing MORE of that in your more recent tunes ... and to be honest .... I am also hearing a HUGE progression in your musical offerings .... the growth from your earlier posts to today's posts is phenomemal ! Did Macjams do that ???? or did it just take some time for you to truly recognize what you were capable of? NOW I gotta add you to my list and get the emails ! p.s. .... you DO deserve the forum post of praise! (p.s.s. I liked the way this one faded out on a HIGH vocal note ... nice).

Vic Holman said 442 days ago
man caves
funny term i know.

I think it's all practice and learning. Plus, just keeping up with everyone else.
The singing is well, just because, I really should practice it more. seems I only do it when recording.

racerat said 442 days ago

Amazing acoustic guitar tones. Full deep, clear and crisp. Well done! "sometimes I need the space", cool lyric. Now this mix rocks, really nice separation and clarity. Fun 80's Fender transistor amp distortion guitar lead.

You not far off of the lead. One of my modeled presets in my GNX2 peddle board. melding a 80's marshall & fender twin amp with high gain
