Description Carlo was pretty pumped when he read what MacJams' finest had to say about our recent collaborations. We'll take the good and the bad!

Carlo wrote the words, sang the song, played the guitar parts and sent it to me. My first impression was that it sounded like a Dinosaur Jr song or a Sonic Youth tune.

Yeah, I loved it. I knew why it was sent to me with such an authentic organic feel. It needed it's limbs removed and replaced with arms cast in plastic.

We appreciate any feedback on this tune.

Thanks
Lyrics NEXT WAVE ROCKER

I hold my limbs in a tangle,
a jumble of wires.
Making monkeyfist in the telephone booth,
ah-hum-deh-o
I don’t move like a man
when I’m moving my hands.
My hand is a kung-fu grip,
kung-fu plastic grip!

And I don’t wanna stop, I’m a no-stop rocket
Hasbro-mattel, Mattel-hasbro
And I don’t wanna stop, I’m a no-stop rocket
I told you before what kind of rocker I am
I told you before what kind of rocker I am

I’m a next-wave swamp thing
all circuits and ice cream
ah-hum-deh-o
To have and to hold to touch and to know
I feel alright
I don’t move like a man when
I’m moving my hands
A timeghost in the telephone booth
a-hum-deh-o

And I don’t wanna stop, I’m a no-stop rocket
Hasbro-mattel, Mattel-hasbro
And I don’t wanna stop, I’m a no-stop rocket
I told you before what kind of rocker I am
I told you before what kind of rocker I am

you guys are the rulers. you're right about the sonic youth thing, but the weird keyboard effects(is that a wah wah pedal?) and the fake drums take it somewhere else. i really like this.

five_extra_arms said 457 days ago
Rulers?
Thanks Michael. Coming from a songwriter like you, that's a major compliment.

I enjoy writing songs with Carlo because of his unique poetry and how he somehow works it all into the song. In our earliest songs, Carlo would have me hack out some off timed beat on the drum machine, then he would sing, then I'd play a bass line, then he did guitar tracks! Tokyo One was the first song we wrote like that. Uncanny!

When he sends me the file with his vocals, guitars and a single drum loop from beginning to end, I feel like a kid in a candy store.

The weird keyboard effect is specifically the Fuzzy Clav Instrument (which has Auto Wah in it's default setting) and I added a tiny bit of echo and reverb to produce what I felt was the most appropriate wah wah possible. Thanks for asking.

I tend to forget the original dynamic of our band - we used Dr Rhythm and ran it through an Alesis Midiverb and we used the Latin Drums on one of my Casio synthesizers. Fake drums were and are part of our sound. I guess I should just quit moaning about it and pay more attention to the girls dancing on the dance floor.

I was always plugging drum machines into synthesizers to try to get new sounds. I do the same thing for many of my songs as a starting point. I prefer the midi tracks so I can control every single note. Loops to me are still a gigundus mystery and I admire anyone able to use them.

Thanks for listening.

Bob

Thanks Steve. We're printing some more youth sizes this weekend. I'll be sure to get you a child's small!

Hope you're having fun and finding inspiration in Malta. I saw the Malta flag beside your name yesterday. How cool are you, Mr World traveler?

Be safe and don't drink the water!

The chorus is catchy like a kung-fu grip. The evil-scientist hybridation of organic and plastic is a success . Glad to see Telephone Booth back from the Junkyard with a vengeance.

Kung Fu Grip
Thanks CJ.

I appreciate your comments on the song before I posted it. It helped me focus on a few important elements that I would've probably overlooked. The end result could've been too many synthesizers.

Hey, how was the pool party?

Really clever with a sledge hammer delivery.

You think Carlo's in tune with his childhood?

Ask me if I'm autobot,
I say I am not,
Maybe I am Micronaut
Maybe I am not

Just a few lyrics he decided not to use on this version of the song.

He is one clever sledge hammer.

hasbro mattel - mattel hasbro

you guys have really done it this time. Ihar you about wanting live drums - but you did such a good job with the loops that I never would have thought about it. How'd you manage that after the guitars? Did Carlo play to a more basic track that you replaced? Excellent synth business and the guitars and vox are perfect. Reminds me of the Voidoids as much as SY.

five_extra_arms said 457 days ago
Drums
Thanks bud. I'm really taken by the response from you guys. I think the song is pretty great, but I wasn't expecting anyone else to like it!

Carlo used a single drum loop throughout the song pretty much as a metronome, and when I got it, I started by finding members of the same JamPack family (imagine that) and tried to make transitions. A crash, a little change up kinda thing and then I hacked loops to the point of pure stupidity for the explosion towards the end.

Carlo and I had a very close drummer friend die while we were working on this song, so it was my intention to create maniacal intense drums like our buddy Jeff might've done.

I hear the Hell in his voice as well. Thanks again for the kind words. The next song is already in the works and boy is it something!

it creates musical poetry of decades ago. the lyrics are gooey. they almost coalesce into meaning, and then metamorphose into looking-glass insects and fly away. it is a delight to see this happen. it seems tight and loose simultaneously. 0x0

We are committed to an album's worth of music. Not sure what the cover art will look like, but you can rest assured it will be well planned.

Not only is Carlo one of my most favorite singer songwriters, he's also one of my most favorite visual artists.

And estellie, what's up with your fascination with limbs?

catchy and scratchy
I wanna be a rock star with a kung fu grip and paint my face like a mattel toy from china and eat ice cream in swamps and tangle my arms telephone chords while dismantling the phone receiver...well that's the type of rock start I am.

Real catchy tune and liked you synth inclusion, you come up with clever workable sounds. i guess that's the type of rock start you are!

Thanks for the laugh Vic. Now I know what kind of rocker you are too....

Waitaminit..... I already knew what kind of rocker you are. One of the finest from the swamps of China. Wha?

Glad you like the synths. I tried real hard to create a decent contrast with those beefy guitars without trying to put it up front and steal the spotlight. That's not the kind of rocker I am.

Great work, guys!
I'm way into the post-punk loop/live sound of men making noise that suits their character (although, having not met Giancarlo (yet) that's a calculated assumption).

I took your heads-up about the drum sounds and thought that it may be a weak part of the tune, but no, no & no! That's what gives it the interest as a fine backdrop to the guitar and bass work that is right up my street. Vox are great - Carlo is right up there obviously enjoying the gig, and Bob - your backing is ace, and that's the 5EA stamp, over what really should be on the Telephone Booth profile...

Downloaded, faved and straight to iPod. I love being able to do that - especially with work from your stable.

Keep it up, boys!

Iggy

Speaking of Iggy, you should see Carlo perform live. Cat-like prowess with kung-fu grip. He has a real presence and a shipload of attitude packed into his thin white tattooed frame.

He was meant to be a front man, no one will ever argue that.

Why, it's been said that he's the Steve Craig of the USA.
(Steve Craig? Wasn't he the Crocodile Hunter?)

I was really excited to hear a new one of yours. The chorus is great for starters. Carlo is an outstanding writer. It does remind me of Sonic Youth and the Pixies somewhat, which is cool.
Awesome "keyboard fx's" they really fit the song.
Great rock voice Carlo.

Excitable Boys

It's very cool making noise with Carlo again.

We always found a way to make it work out with our combined interests and various noise makers. I think the secret is to keep the guitar and vocals as the central elements and pile the rest of the noises around it and try to create some variety here and there. We like to glue things down and peel 'em back off, scratch it out or paint over the whole thing and start over. It's a great process that works well for us both. Carlo calls it "kick the can" Secrets from the Telephone Booth - October Edition

Another
song that is way cool, Bob! I like the way you use words. Some of it may not make sense to me, but the lyrics are somehow satisfying. Maybe it's their rhythmic value? Anyway this one was fun. I love the sounds you create.

five_extra_arms said 454 days ago
What Are Words For?
Hey Chip, thanks for listening. Although I didn't write these words, I have written words similar and in a totally different order. Why, once I even a song that had words from begining to end, not one of the words (or combination of words) was "kung-fu grip" or "circuits and ice cream".

Thanks for the good news! There's a ton of future dads/new dads roaming this site. Congratulations!

Non Stop Rocket
Dear X-Tra Appendages,

This song is surely a hit. It kind of sickens me though. You see Deanna Sue, my ex, has always had a thing for space travel. She really got excited about that dufuss from Virgin Airways starting a space travel program for Joe six packs and she was ready to go. I told her that as soon as it was a reality, I%u2019d shoot her into space no matter what it cost.

Well, like all Englishmen, the promise seemed to be a long time coming, to make things worse space travel seemed to be one of the few glues holding our marriage together.

After a hot night of efficient, consensual sex, Deanna Sue started talking about the trip. I, under the influence of satisfaction and one too many Mike%u2019s Hard Lemonades spouted, %u201CThat Limey%u2019s never gonna get off the ground!!%u201D

I don%u2019t think any heat shield could take the searing that I took while re-entering the reality that was marital dissatisfaction. Deanna Sue called me a buzz kill, which is quite the insult considering she consumed 12 Khalua & Yoohoo%u2019s.

Needless to say, your no stop rocket brought all the miserable memories right back down to earth!!!

Thanks for nothing, schlep!!!
