Keywords like the song but somethings wierd about it (1)
Description i posted this when i first started messing with GB and wasn't happy with the mix (mostly the vocals which I recorded with a 58). I took a couple of things out, and added 200-250Hz to the vocals.

here's my question: do I need to re-do the vocals? i can't think of a way to clean them up anymore. i have a condenser mic now, and guess I'm just being lazy. also, what else is suggested to make this better (i don't want drums in it). the timing is off between the synth and the piano at the end. thanks.
Lyrics The sound of your voice is making me crazy
Every choice makes me feel hazey tonight
I'm ready to move, I'm ready to stay here with you
Sometimes it's wierd. sometimes it's fine here
With you

(chorus)
If I try too heard
If I walk away
If I just say no
It makes me unkind, unsure, unlikeable, unkind.

I'm writing a check
I'm paying my bills on time
I need to be strong
I need to be trusted this time
Sometimes it's wierd, sometimes it's fine here with you
I'll spend the night if you think it's right

(chorus)
If I try too heard
If I walk away
If I just say no
It makes me unkind, unsure, unlikeable, unkind.

the piano and your singin just wonderfull ...
but your singin is more higher than the back ground
music .no the drums here wont let this song
be more passionate ..moody I said .its a cool

thanks for listening. i think the vocals are too loud also. usually i'll do one (maybe 2) takes of a vocal all the way through and just leave it alone, but I think i tried to piece together a vocal on this one. probably just do it over.

bud said 457 days ago
First - this song is incredibely beautiful
as it is - and if you hadn't asked I wouldn't have thought it needed anything. The only reason I hear to redo the vocals is the few instances of popping or shushing - but it doesn't really bother me. The vocal performance is excellent - but who knows what another take would be like? I don't see the need to add anything to the mix - I like the sparsity.

Not much help I'm afraid.

michael2 said 457 days ago
thanks for listening BUd
i think i may redo the vox, as they're not sitting right with me. thanks for listening.

biba_nova said 457 days ago
here's my question: do I need to re-do the vocals?
No - necessarily

But I think you could balance them a little better in the mix

This is a very nice song Michael

Wonderful !
very great post here, the music is very fine but i agree with feter "the singin is more higher than the music" but i love your singing here very much.

thanks
glad you like the song. vox are way too loud at points, I will end up re-recording them.

Dj French Toast said 457 days ago
I vote
for redoin the vocals but you have to be in the mood cause the soul in this song is awesome man ! god your voice is so tom petty meets bowie meets you ! I really like this but I think you could soften the voice a little and then maybe add a little effect to the track hmmm and there is alot of poping and cut out in the vocal and for such a great song it deserves the vip treatment .....sweet song dude !

michael2 said 457 days ago
i
think you're right. the vocals are just too trashy sounding for the rest of the song. looking at the scores on this song, it got much higher for composition than production and that says something. i'll try the vocals again and thanks for your input.

Godchaser said 457 days ago
I think it's....
a beautiful song.Really like your writting and use of minimal sound sources here.I personally like a little something on a vocal track to add a bit of sparkle and shine, but given the subject matter the dry vocal track works in the songs favor. The simple and straight forward melody and how you used few sounds really add to the emotion of the song.Very much enjoyed.

Blessings,

michael2 said 457 days ago
thanks godchaser
i am still trying to figure out how to get a vocal recording i like. i tend to prefer things a little dry as effected vocals are like tattoos to me (after the initial infatuation, i start wondering what I was ever thinking). i may need to look into some vocal oriented plug-ins.

Vic Holman said 457 days ago
yup
a good re-mix. the vocals are more centered and greater presence.

A good simplistic direct style like how Lennon would do at times. More intimate and a personal message.

michael2 said 457 days ago
vic
you're right: the vocals were on the left before as I didn't realize that a mic had to be in mono as opposed to stereo. the piano was panned hard to the left in some half assed attempt at balancing things out. glad to say I'm still learning as I go along. thanks for your kind words.

echoroom said 457 days ago
Sublime
You are one talented guy, you know that. The vox are excellent, dont re-do them... they sound raw and naked... but they do need a bit of re-mixing... they dont quite sit with the piano... but the emotion is right there. Try a bit of eq and maybe reverb - they sound a bit dry to me.

steve

michael2 said 456 days ago
thanks Steve
I need to bone up on my EQ wizardry I think. As it is, I just kind of mess around until i think it's okay (or get sick of doinng it).

Why do
I have missed this the first time around ? Glad to download it now. I like those strawberry fields sounds near the end and the little wet glockenspiels.

michael2 said 456 days ago
thanks
so glad that you liked this one. always gotta put the strawberry fields sounds in. thanks for listening.

Reinholt56 said 457 days ago
Yep, yep, yep......
It's a great track.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't think it needed anything else.

very kind of you to say. thanks for stopping by and checking out my ramblings.

Keep The Vocals
What this song really needs is some really blippity screeching synthesizers right after the LSD laced chorus that buries "unkind, unsure, etc....."

Other than that, I don't see a single thing that needs fixing.

Oh wait, did you leave out the vibraslap? You need to go back and add that.

Let me know if you need any help, bro.

Really nice song Michael.

michael2 said 456 days ago
hells yeah
the vibraslap would rock, what I would really love is the treble-boost whizbanger. thanks for listening.

said 456 days ago
Well first of all
This is great if I could make a suggestion a cool bass line would set this off Enjoyed!

michael2 said 456 days ago
EB
i think i may try that one, maybe somehting on the fuzzy side. thanks

said 455 days ago
pop filter
yeah. i would re-sing them. you have a great moodines in your voice, but the pops and hisses take away from it...

michael2 said 455 days ago
aha
as I expected. thanks for saying something :)

SmokeyVW said 454 days ago
wonderful mood
perfect

sparse

i'm a fan of minimalism i guess.

love those flutes!

what's wrong with the vocals?

thanks

SmokeyVW said 454 days ago
on second thought
ok, if it were my song, i'd add an ambient recording way in the back, just for your headphone wearing listeners.

it would be sounds you'd hear out an apartment window. maybe some children playing, a dog barking. something implying domestic.

but subtle! subtle subtle subtle

but this isn't my song, so it's none of my business... :-)

thanks again

Alannah said 454 days ago
My two cents ???
... I like the song .. I like the vocals ... I think they just need to be "mixed" and "blended" with the music a little more ... to my ears .. they have that "perched" on top of the music sound ... but the singing is great ... it's a mixing issue ... I have the same issue myself when trying to blend my vocals into a music bed .... and I fight fight fight with that perched sound ... I think some volume tweaks .. perhaps a touch of reverb on the vox and a couple of vol changes in the backing track .. and you will hear what I mean ...

gail60 said 454 days ago
Very good song!
Really enjoyed this. To be honest, in my opinion - the vocals are great. I enjoyed feeling the sincerity of the song. If I gave any advice at all it would be to make more songs! Keep doing what you do, cause you do it great!

I like the voice. As has been said above, you have a lot of soul in this performance. You might get more improvement reworking some of the synth and piano parts. Very good song.

Thanks
Bill

Beautiful song
and sung with heart. I agree with DJ French Toast - Petty meets Bowie. I love the sound the way it is as it is drenched in sincerity. Great arrangement of supporting instruments too.

Thanks for sharing!
Keep well,
Doug
