Description McBoy sent me a file with some drums and spacy synth work, suggesting I have a go at fleshing it out. I added some bass & keys and then he added guitar, some cool flugelhorn by Tristan Jenkins, and mixed it down.

He aptly titled it Three Views as I think everyone involved interpreted something a little different in the same set of sonics.

Flugel
Feter, yeah that horn reigns supreme. Its a little more mellow than a trumpet. In the hands of Mr jenkins it sings. Thx for listening

Bubowski said 466 days ago
Dang!
This is really cool. I like the feel of the piece, traditional instrumentation but with all the little off kilter bits. The flugle-horn sounds great and the piano is very nice. Great job was done by all.

Karmatoburn said 465 days ago
off kilter
Graham, it was McBoy's spooky synth work that set the tone. As well, I think Tristan and I did our parts separate and then McBoy blended them (as only he can do... hehehe :-).
'apppreciate you taking the time to check it out

spitlogic said 466 days ago
Very jazzlike
I like the horn in this. I would probrably think of this more as nujazz, but with the different textures you've added it could pass (but thats just my humble opinion). All around I would say this is a very realxing, well mixed piece of work.

Karmatoburn said 465 days ago
nujazz
Mitchell, ditto on the genre's. We started in Ambient but the end result is closer to jazz. I also love the horn, it's the sustaining thread.

Love yur new avatar, whats the tranlation?

spitlogic said 465 days ago
translation
Liberator of the Opressed
or
Of the opressed we liberate

Something to that effect.

Somewhere in a star cruiser
...on the non-stop run between Earth and Babylon 5, in the first class section, a space alien combo is playing in a posh bar. Planets drift by the ports while a creature with more arms than eyes plays a delicate keyboard that looks like it might be breathing on its own. The drums are sentient creatures who love jazz, and every now and then pastel-colored pipes, like organic organ pipes, hiss colored steam into the air that reasonates in time with the keyboard.

The horn player, however, is from Earth. Hey, all the really good ones are.

Karmatoburn said 465 days ago
breathing on its own
Rik, this wonderful comment made my day. I'm a big sci fi fan and this just created the greatest imagery. Your comments are as creative as your music.
Thanks for trip.

Very Nice Job Here KTB, the piano sound just great, the beats are so cool ! Thanks for sharing

Karmatoburn said 465 days ago
cool beats
Yeman, thank you for pickin out that cool swing drum line. I forgot to ask McBoy if it was real or not. Its a delicate feel.

peacepiano said 465 days ago
Cool/Complex
Sounds almost like it came together the other way around. The piano and bass hold the mix together well. The horn is a little reminiscent of Chuck Mangione, but he played over very different sound beds. Cool tune, I'd say too complex for ambient, more like jazz to me :)

Thanks
Bill

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
way around
Bill, appreciate you taking the time to comment. McBoy's original file had the excellent swing feel and the fx sounds. It was interesting to try and create something that would slide in between the two. When he added Tristans horn it really got sparked

Jazz
by any other name. Astonishing mixture of sounds, jazz playing and ambiance. Great music!

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago

Neo, many thanks for the kind words!

I was getting worried
about you, I thought you were getting like me and not producing anything new. It's always nice to have some friends to give you that push and you have some talented friends. Good to hear you again.

Karmatoburn said 465 days ago
talented friends.
which i would count you among them :-)

Right you are/were? I am in somewhat of a creative freefall. Not having any flashes of my own racing to get on my hard disk. I'm glad MB sent this my way.

I'm also gonna troll with the soundbed, you and Jim Bouchard helped me with. Posting that next to see if I can get a vocalist to join our little experiment.

estellie said 465 days ago
sci-fi jazz
that would be my category if I had a gun to my head.

Lovely: the drums at the beginning really drew me in. All the sounds are beautiful. Keyboards, guitars, otherworldly pipe/reed sounds, etc.

I don't know that I have words of criticism, except to ask about the ending, and what led you to that choice. It wasn't otherworldly enough compared to the rest of the piece.

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
sci-fi jazz
Two of my fav things welded together :-) As to the ending, I'll let MB tackle that one. I myself always struggle with that. Usually I just fade. Wish I was better with that. Thx for lending an ear

echoroom said 465 days ago
Relax!
This has a chilled feel, but with an edge... almost like flicking through radio stations and finding parts that fit (does that make sense??). Lovely production - this ounds totally live. Cool drums and wonderful key work, boys!

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
flicking stations
exactly Steve. Esp at the very beginning. There's a space where its waiting to land. Apropos. Always great to see a comment from you. thx

I enjoy the jouney through this.....
I enjoy listening to the journey through this piece of music.

Very interesting and effective.

Well done to all.

Paul.

thoddi said 465 days ago
cool jazz
Opens kind of in several directions, as a sort of a warm up ahead of a concert. Then you meet up at a point as you where playing together on that concert. Sometimes you fly off in different directions again, just to meet up further out in the time line. There are so many brilliant details in this.

Great tone in that horn, and the genius choices of guitar tones and ways of playing from mcboy, held together by the gentle touches of the keys.

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
different directions
Thor, Echoroom suggested flicking the radio dial. I'd ditto that and your comment re: meeting up. Thanks for listening

Rebsie said 465 days ago
Nice view
A fine interweaving of strands ... very creative and full of changing textures.

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
thx
Rebsie, it was fun as well. One of those jams that comes together rather quickly and w/o too much angst.

Wildly floating like a tethered balloon...
It must have been a fairly cool piece to begin with, John cuz you guys have shared three pertty cool takes on whacha heard -

Nice work!

I loved the way this sort slinked ya way way out, but kept ya close enough in, so as not to loose grounding -
Strangely coherent and beautifully rendered.

A very cool piece, Mister Sirs! Thanks! Dion

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
tethered balloon
Dion, what a wonderful comment. You have as much gift for word as you do your music. It was indeed, an excellent sound bed to work with. Lots of ideas started the moment I sat down and played along

Mcboy said 464 days ago
john
many thanks for co-composing this music.....i had originally put this together when garageband first came out....i penciled in the bass line.....moped around with the piano sound.......but the synth and eletrical bits are still unchanged...the drums were redone....but u took it right where i envisioned it to be......it is always fun bringing an old track to life with a new set of clothing.....many thanks for your creativity...big ear....and of course playing.......

Karmatoburn said 464 days ago
new threads
MB, my pleasure. I'm happy you kept me in mind. I haven't done a lot of playing recently and this was a joy to work with. Its motivated me to brush off some old files and dress them up like wise. Hope we can do more

DWL said 464 days ago
Miles of fun
it's the flugelhorn wot does it.

Cool playing and arrangement guys.

Cheers

great
at first I was thinking Sun Ra, and then the change comes in to highlight that beautiful piano part. i really like this very much. I wouldn't call it nu-jazz (as that has some bad connotations for me), but this is more experimental in my eyes. really amazing job guys.

Live

It sounds almost like live improvisation by connected people .
Always moving with great colors .

Very cool start and break
then it just keeps getting more interesting. I like the experiment. Everything works together well and holds it's own space as well. Sweet flugelhorn and tasty piano. It's great hearing a real wind instrument here - something rather rare. I like McBoy's little chordings at the end too.

Karmatoburn said 463 days ago
real wind instrument
I couldn't agree more. I'm a little suprised there aren't more horn guys @ MJ. Thanks that the ones we have are among the best. 'preciate you listening

Ibstrat said 463 days ago

I feel like a better musician...
...just from LISTENING to it...

Neat on-and-off-ness to it all, great sort of sketched feel that seems to capture something truer than something more one-dimensionally unified...

Great tones, performances, space...

what a gerat find
This is the best thing I have come across in a while.
The improv is my first love. You three have captured some great playing here.
The horn solo, exchange with the guitar, half way in, sounds like your in the room together.

The piano stuff here is unreal. Happening. Put together real nice. Groovy!
In the spirit of jammin (I wanna jamin wit u), men I commend you for your desire to go such a place and perform such daring stuff.
very very nice
