Keywords Biba Nova (1)Chicago (19)revenge (8) ()
Description Biba Nova wrote this and posted the track as 'Like Worshipped Chicago Dogs'. He was kind enough to let me wail over it.

I've wanted to do something experimental for some time (influenced by Bud and Michael2's work), and was really glad Biba let me have a go at this.

Vox and lyrics: Steve
Everything else: Biba Nova.

Thanks for letting me work on this Bryn - it was a real pleasure.

Lyrical Inspirations:
Like Worshipped Chicago Dogs
Taxi Driver
Millers Crossing
Arkham Asylum
Sinatra's 'Chicago'

APOLOGY: I'm currently suffering from wrist strain, so if you comment and I don't reply, apologies... I'm having to severely reduce my computer use at present.

steve
Lyrics In the rain it's coming
Feel a hard rain coming
I'm sleeping with your lover
Son of a motherfucker.
In St. Mary's steeple
A choir of whore's are singing
Billy Sunday's people
Billy Sunday's people

What doesn't kill you
Will make you come.
But it's all too late for me
To forgive and retreat.

Time will reveal your poverty
The runt pup you stomped for fun
Will get one day in the sun
And that day has come...

In the air it's coming
In the air it's coming
Feel a black rain coming
Feel the last rain coming...
The city just stopped breathing
The vermin packed and leaving
Like a falling angel
I will soon be with you.

What doesn't kill you
Will make you come.
But it's all too late for me
To forgive and retreat.

The clock is ticking and the hours waste to nothing
I'll show you something you've never seen done before.
The clock is ticking and the hours waste to nothing
I'll show you something you've never thought possible.

and kind of brooding in a way. Everything is excellent. Biba Nova' piece nice!

And Steve not just your lead vocal is great but your backup vocals really shin and are mixed in quite nicely.

Combination
I like the combination. Your vocals match up well with the music. And the bold use of dynamics in the music sounds good to my ears.

Thanks
Bill

The Infinites said 468 days ago
Sorry about the usual Bowie comparisons...
...but this could have been a missing track from Diamond Dogs.

Broody, moody and bad. Billy Sunday can't shut you down, Steve!

DL'd. Like a lot. Don't reply. Get your wrist sorted. Imagine what you could do if full match fit!!

What Doesn't Kill You...
You really can't go wrong with such a great piece of music to work with, moody, but nicely varied and evocative of enough different things that you can have lots of lyrical freedom (which you REALLY took advantage of, mister). Great music, Bryn.

Whatever Bob says about the bad swears, I love the freedom you took here and I think you tapped into something really cool with this. I love the contrast between your upper and lower registers. Actually, overall the song has lots of contrast and dynamics in the music and the vocal and that's wonderful.

Biba's track brought something out .... the lyrics were written fairly quickly, and theere's some quite nasty stuff in there. I surprised my self.

Still, saves on the therapy bills

Wow Steve!
Those vocals fit in perfectly with Biba Nova's track. I really enjoyed the lyrics, too. Outstanding job with this!

michael2 said 468 days ago
wow
this is excellent. your voice(s) are without a doubt always way above the bar the rest of us struggle to reach, but the melody and the lyrics and the way that you just made this song your own is inspiring (to say the least). you did a great job.

echoroom said 468 days ago
The line..
..'what doesn't kill you..' was inspired by something in one of your recent tracks, I think the one wth Bud.

Cheques in the mail!

A wee in awe here!
First of all, great job guys! This is so dark it's light, man. I never know what to expect when I get one of those new song emails from you...you...you...you (actually, MJ's) Production is T-I-G-H-T and everything else is outta sight! Kudos fellers.

So dark..
... bryn had to use a torch when he wrote this.

and i took a shower after writing the lyric!

Super good
Very impressive singing, seems to mesh with the music perfectly... as if the music were another aspect of your voice.

racerat said 468 days ago
falsetto
Steve,
I can't say I have evr heard you explore your falsetto register so much or so well. Bida's movingly dark and acerbic musiccal bed lends itself to this dense quilt of tender lyrical pathos. I have to say I didn't want it to end. But I always appreciate being left wanting more than having to sit through 2 minutes of repeating stanzas and choruses which is sometime the case here on MJ (but not in this song happily) (and I do not exempt myself from that criticism I am sad to say). I really love this track, and I can learn from it.

echoroom said 468 days ago
Bryns work on this..
.. is ace ... i wish i could write like this myself!

I think the title helps make sense of the lyric.. it was interesting writing a 'character piece'.

It's not about me, honest!

Steve - this is a great collab
You really took this and ran with it - pushing your vocals and writing to a really exciting new high. It's been great hearing all the collabs happening these days and being lucky enough to work with some truly gifted people here. You and Biba made some real magic.

Fabulous
Really doesn't sound like a song added to an existing track. It's beautifully and deeply integrated. Hits the spot perfectly with smoothness and emotional punch.

The 'What doesn't kill you' sections are superb ... that high plaintive two-part harmony is so powerful.

Hey Rebs...

This is breathtakingly good. I love Biba Nova's moody track. The falsetto voices are very striking, moving and lift the song into a very special realm. The poetic lyrics as always also fit perfectly. This is a very important song.

I know well enough from my collabs with atonaliS how difficult it is to vocalise 'special' tracks like this. You did a splendid job. And what's more: it has such a relax feel as if you did it without any effort. That's high class, Steve. Brilliant, that's all I can say.

But I trust you Steve, so here I am...

It didn't take long for you to reclaim your old habits. Drinking, smoking, cursing like a sailor.... Next you'll start wearing a safety pin in your nose. What has this world come to when the nicest guy ever goes to the Dark Side?

Funny. Everyone seems to like the Bad Steve, especially young girls "forced" to wear sailor suits and tap dance.

This is a real dark and moody song. Nice work biba! I love what you did here.

And Steve, you did some pretty amazing stuff with this song. It's refreshing to see you reach out and try something completely alien and outside of your comfort zone. Somehow, in your falsetto, it's almost sweet, like when your 4 year drops the "F bomb" in front of your family. I can't wait to hear you swearing in our first collab one day!

echoroom said 465 days ago

... it's liberating to let the devi out of the bottle... it's just getting him abck in again that's the problem.

In fact, that's the title.

Nice guy... man, wait 'til we meet... are you in for a surprise!

said 466 days ago
Chills on my spine...
...Steve, your vocals have never sounded this good - and you've never sounded anything less than amazing. Were you inspired by Biba's music? Did something catch fire? There's a darkness that feels like needles moving in the wind here. Being able to sing well is one thing, but being able to sing with an emotional razor that cuts just beneath the complecancy of listening is another thing entirely.

This is better than anything 'real' radio has offered me in far too many years.

echoroom said 465 days ago
Gulp!
I'm blushing - thansk Rik. The lyrical direction was inspired by Biba's track, and the title... made me think of organised crime, and then it turned into a revenge song.

Funny how lyrics come.. the 'choir of whores' was inspired by a line in the Batman graphic novel 'Arkham Asylum', about ' choirs of mutilated children' - a horrible image that really stuck in my head... years after, these things pop out of your subconcious and land on the page.

Wow. the harmonies of voices, the whole thing is like the soundtracks to those movies that change your life. I wish I could make music like that.

It's a song I'd need to listen to in the dark.

The first verse and the refrain are the heart of this song to me.

echoroom said 465 days ago
Yes...
... fav it 5 times. Surprised you didn't mention T. Yorke, it has that kinda vibe.

I wrote it in the dark, so best to listen with the lights off (it's less dangerous!).

thinking of blade runner

can't help thinking of blade runner visuals as i listen to this.

i have been a silent admirer of bibanova's sound, which strikes me as always deep and brooding, crisp and ominous.

Steve's lyrics and voice just added another layer of mysticism to his music. loved the harmonies, too!

this is awesome guys!

Wow
Thank you all for the comments on this song. You all may or may not be aware that (for me) this is part of a fascination with a particular chord sequence and melody which first came to life just over a year ago as SISCOM GURU. In the intervening months I have enlisted the contributions of many people and the song seems to regenerate itself and mutate into a new form every few months.

Steve's vocals and lyrical content took it into a new realm which was unexpected for me but entirely appropriate for the modern baroque/gothic feel that the music conveys.

Disturbing, experimental yet unable to stop singing it...who could ask for a better accolade?

Steve - great vocals on this Totally complimentary AND enhancing to the music. I would love to work with you on more stuff in the future and get you sucked in even deeper into 'the process' - thus far you have only experienced the tip of the iceberg and although even this may have been a bit out of your comfort zone, I am so glad you went with your gut feeling and came up with this great contribution.

You are now officially a part of continuing SISCOM saga - welcome!

If anyone is interested, please let me ask you to stop by and listen to the earlier versions which can be found here

biba_nova said 465 days ago
Actually
The Ugly Dog Prophecies isn't an earlier version at all. It is the latest version that Mystified contributed to and was also based on 'Like Chicago Dogs'.

I should have mentioned in the earlier blurb that Mystified has to all intents and purposes become a co-writer to the musical side of this since the EVP#2 version...and her contributions have been magnificaent to say the least.

Sorry I'm late, but I've been away for a while.
This is a really classy tune - amazing vocals Steve. I haven't reached the end as I write, and I'm hoping for a take off into screaming guitars - oh well, didn't happen :(
To me there's room for a full verse of a crescendo of whirlpool guitars at the end, pushing further and further into the weirdness, but maybe not :)
Excellent post!

... that piccie is just wonderful - much easier on the legs than a walkabout. Good to have you back here!

I must admit, I did on an earlier version start going up and octave and getting loud and emotional, but that's what I always do, so I guess that's why this ended with a whimper rather than a bang. Maybe the next collab with Bryn I'll get Philip in to crank up the geetars to 11!

Thats cool with me
as long as I have the opportunity to make the guitars sound like kazzoos or tin whistles or a cello or a drill or at the very least slow/pitch them down by 75% or ...something... (if I think it will take the track into another dimension)

I might also want to turn them back down to 9 or 8.5
