Keywords echo (22)appliances (1)peas (2)
Description An echoing experiment on the gb whirly (hence the title). Whily recorded in one take. Brush drums added after. I fixed the left hand's timing and kept the right in synch to smooth over the worst of my blunders, but I hope I saved some of the spontaneity of the original jam.

Feter
Did you listen through earphones? I almost found the panning to be too much that way. Glad you enjoyed my playing and thanks for stopping by.

Feter said 468 days ago
yes !
I usualy listen through headphone ..which is more
enjoyale ..!
its an idea and I liked it very much !!

echoroom said 468 days ago
I love...
.. the whirly, so this is a winner for me. Use of echo is good, and the drums work subtly in the background. Nice jam Bill - are you going to develop this further?

Steve-
Glad you like the sound of the whirly. I haven't yet thought of what I could do next with this, but there are some very intentional elements that might play well in a larger combination of instruments.

I love ..
.. this kind of music ..

The stuff here are great, wonderful composition and well mixed and played ! Enjoyed this piece so MUCH !

Thanks for listening. I'm glad you enjoyed the performance.

This has
a Harpsichord kind of sound and I love that title with a twist (with a TWIST... whirled... You get it? LOL I only got the pun as I wrote it LOL) Anyway I digress... it puts me in mind of travelling on a slow enjoyable train ride to.......World Peace???? Very pleasant piece, expertly produced, M

peacepiano said 468 days ago
Moviz
The title was very carefully chosen after spending hours looking at the midi tracks in garageband which are a sort of green color that suggests....LOL

I like the traveling image. Thanks for listening!

Used to have . . .
I used to have a Wurlitzer electric piano, which I bought around 1982. It was a nice instument for my little trailer I lived in. I did miss 88 keys, but it was nice to have this keyboard anyhow. This track reminds me of that keyboard that I should have hung on to.

Your piece is very interesting. Reminds me a bit of Wendy Carlos' Switched-On Bach. I like the echo effects a lot. Imaginative and cool. The mid-range ostinato really does glue this piece together. Makes the high-register improv that much more appealing.

peacepiano said 468 days ago
John-
The GarageBand/Clavinova combination seems to reproduce the Whirly and Rhodes sounds better than the B4 and Piano. Do you think the fancier software instruments like Akoustik Piano have the flexibility to adapt to the Clavinova as control keyboard?

Your rebuilding my music vocabulary, I had to look up ostinato to make sure I knew what it meant :) I actually used the ostinato instead of a metronome to keep my playing steady. Thanks for stopping by!!

John Stebbe said 468 days ago
Akoustic
Sure, I've used Akoustic Piano on my MacBook, with my Clavinova at my school as controller. Works great. And my Yamaha P-120 I use at home has an action which seems to me to be identical to my Clavinova. The downside for many folks is that with these controllers, there's no aftertouch, and no pitch-bend or modulation controllers. But since I am primarily interested in akoustic piano plug-ins, I don't miss those things too much.

"Ostinato" is a great word! That's one of the vocab words that I assign my kids at my school to memorize. Then I demonstrate an ostinato, using all sorts of crazy things, like patting my belly, spouting nonsense words/syllables, and just anything at all, as long as it's a repeating pattern. I like to try to 'find the fun' in any concept I'm trying to teach. And the kids really like the 'fun factor.' They can see that I'm still part kid, even though I'll soon be 48 years old. So then I have volunteers make up their own ostinato, and when they can see that it does not have to be anything too high-brow, or 'classical,' they can really have fun with it, and reinforce their music vocab at the same time.

Enough typing from me. Nice track here!

I must not have the ear
I don't hear any blunders here. I think the brush drum is a nice addition and adds to the melody. The playing is very good. I can never seem to get the whrily piano to sound right with anything I try to make.

peacepiano said 468 days ago
Spitlogic-
Well the runs are improvisations so I suppose all restrictions are off. But to my mind I did get a little too free with the rhythm in the later long runs where the echo covers the sloppiness rather than enhancing it as in the shorter runs. Thanks for your comments!

Fun stuff Bill
I get images of robots for some reason.....

Is it you or me that's weird?

Cheers

Dick

peacepiano said 468 days ago

If you're wearing headphones like Feter, you are getting a mega-dose of ostinato panning which is quite lock step, so you could be okay. But sometimes you are a bit off ;) Thanks for listening in.

Nice one!
It was a "spacey classical" feel to me. I love all the slap backs of the delay. Very enjoyable Sat. morning tune.

Thanks for sharing!

Peace.

peacepiano said 468 days ago
Chris
Thanks for stopping by. I'm using a pretty long and bright delay on this one, glad you enjoyed the effect.

Direction

left , right , around , back ??? It turns it turns nicely.
Very soft and calm piece .
It's quite difficult with a beginning like this one to choose what's next , I think you found out well .

Thanks for seeing my direction. One of the advantages of recording is that I don't have to submit you to the bad starts or losses in concentration on the the early tries. Take care.

a bit of steve reich in it
Nice one!!! I love the fragility and the lightness of it. Lovely tune, thanks for being able to download this. This could go on for ever and ever in my ears.

btw I did a
song called Why me (at the bottom of my long list) that tries the same "trick". So I kind of know how difficult it is to do this sort of music.

I am listening to your tune right now :) This is my second major experiment with long echos so I am starting to get a feel for the possibilities. I am glad you liked the results. I can play longer, but usually there are breaks in the rhythm that would be hard to edit out, so the best way to hear more is to play it again :)

thoddi said 467 days ago
Cool echoes
The left hands tight groove holds this one together. Funny piece with the echoes... A bit psychedelic. If I close my eyes and move to the groove I get a little dizzy;)

peacepiano said 467 days ago
Thoddi
Sounds like you were wearing headphones also ;) I wasn't thinking psychedelic but I see what you mean. Thanks for listening and I hope you didn't get too dizzy :)

...whirled peas is a perfect title...I like the way you go in and out of the sustain...cool piece...

peacepiano said 464 days ago

I wish I had extra hands! Maybe FiveExtraHands could tell me how its done ;)
The echos are a boost when you find a sequence that works.
Thanks for the comments :)

All we are saying ..

..is give peas a chance Bill ..I love this .. those
tones are just so perfect .. quirky offbeat ending
though .. bass drum seems in the wrong place ;o)

found myself swaying away .. you created an ambience ..
or on-bee-ons (as Henri would tell you ;o))

Get in there with the tools and FX!! It's sw sw sw these days ...

peacepiano said 462 days ago
Alan
Glad you like the tune, and the punny title. I am playing around with a more intentional take on this idea but I will work on the ending of this one. There is a little slow down in the right hand that seems to work, but I didn't really solve the drum problem. Back the the garage.

Doadars Uncle said 460 days ago
Nice spinny song!
Hey Bill, didn't you have another tune with a houshold appliance?

Really enjoyed the peas thing!

Doug

peacepiano said 459 days ago
Doug
Yes, this is the second time I used an appliance for a picture. Maybe this is the beginning of a series of odd keyboard experiments, illustrated with unusual pictures of appliances ;)

this tune is very interesting and it has a fun counterpoint going on. wawho!

Thanks for listening. Counterpoint is one of my favorite things about music. Doesn't always come off as smooth as this, but I keep trying.

very interesting panning effects. The tune easily captures my attention and sustains it throughout the whole thing. I like how everything plays off of eachother. Good work.

Thanks for the listen. With this much echo, its almost like playing with yourself as accompanist.

Splendid, sparkling, star-lit sounds of joy....

so simple in its presentation and, yet, so expansive in what it evokes.

Kudos.
