Description Josie likes chocolates. Josie lives in Shanghai. Josie sent me some spoken lines in Mandarin (about chocolates). Josie was my muse for this little song.

Hope you enjoy it...
Lyrics Bring me glass of your foreign tea
Write me a postcard in Mandarin
Show what you've learned on
your censored screen
Pull down the curtain and let me see
Pieces of anger
Mountains of joy
Open a bottle of honesty
to set you free

Paint down your name in calligraphy
Dream all your daydreams in decency
Chocolates for Josie
Sweets in a box
'Hi mister chocs, you're incredibly'
Dark wooden chopsticks
Handwritten words
Open a barrel of mystery
for you and me

Try to explain me democracy
Maybe we're victims of history
Chocolates with coffee
Chocolates with milk
Portions of sweetness and energy
Follow your parents
Do as you're told
Searching your own chocolate recipe
for harmony

Deep, haunting
You have a way of writing music that accesses my subconscious mind... Always moving, always operating at a deep level. It's great to hear a new song of yours, you talented man!

Hope all is well with you.

You strike me again with your lovely comment. What can I say? Music is good. I try to make music. I try to be good. And being supported by you is a great honour. Thanks again, Clark.

love the chord progression and melody, and then when the beat comes in it was really unexpected. your voice sounds great, almost reminds me of David Sylvian (one of my faves). great stuff.

moorlandt said 472 days ago
michael
I'm just addicted to odd chord progressions:-) Doesn't always make the song easy to listen to. I'm glad you like it. Sylvian... yes. He's stalking me for the rest of my life I guess:-)
Thanks so much for your comment.

Pure sound
Mustve been an impressive muse to inspire such a great song. Great sound quality on this!

moorlandt said 471 days ago
Tom
Sure she was a great muse. In fact Josie is one of my 'believers' on a site called Sellaband. The song made some fuzz, because it was the first artist/believer collab on that site. A wonderful experience...
Thanks a million for your comment again, Tom.

Very
original; love the textures, the spoken voice, and "surprise guitars" near the end.

A warm welcome to my page! Yes, I think the guitar is a little surprise at the end. I wanted to make the contrast as high as possible with the very intimate e-piano, bells and Josie's voice to close with. Thanks for popping in.

Fascinatin' stuff. Walter, you have such a cool style. The spare, somewhat edgy arrangement makes me think of Tom Waits. I really like the extra voice in there. You have included all sorts of little touches, and they all seem essential to the overall song. Really great work, man!

you know, you write the songs I have to fave before it's even over, and then, when it gets even better, I wonder if I can fave again.

Surreal carousel feel to this. The innocence mixed with the dark human nature of this is thrilling.

The Top!
GREAT job on this, Walter; the whole song is held together with little points of sound. Beautiful.
Josie is swell, too; I dig her phone voice on this stellar track

moorlandt said 471 days ago
Sonny
Makes me a huge pleasure you like this track... Josie recorded her voice on (what I think) a very low-end recorder, so there was quite some disturbing noise I had to filter away. That's the reason why it sounds a bit like a telephone voice. But I think it fits the song, and adds a bit of mystery from far away. Thanks so much again!

Wonderful work Walter, simply wonderful!

Your creative melody lines that comes rolling from that keyboard, and the whole composition really brings on a mystic mood to me.
The spoken words are a tasteful element in here.
Nice sax as always Walter:)

moorlandt said 470 days ago
Thor
So, you're mystified by the song:-) Thanks for popping in again, Thor. It's always an honour to have a visit from you. I must admit that this is not a real sax for once, just some midi horns from one of the Jampacks. I guess I was just a tiny bit too lazy this time... a keyboard needs no cleaning after being played. Hahaha!

sorry had to throw that in.

Well Walter, this is splendid. The break with the female voice is a cool diversion and really adds a bonus to the ears.

China Girl part 2. In only the way that you could do it. Very Excellent piece . I like the cherry filled myself.

'life is like a box of chocalote'... sure, I know that expression, but I'll probably die an idiot, because I never heard WHY it is... Please help me out!
Hold on, I'm not Mr Bowie (besides, it's YOUR voice which is very reminiscent), but Josie sure is a china girl:-)
Thanks for passing by once again, Vic!

life is like a box of chocolates, because you never know what you're going to get.

A line from Tom Hank's "Forrest Gump" movie. I think it was a metaphor about life. Sweet on the outside, but you never know what you're biting into.

Reminds me...
...of a scarier version of 'The Fat Lady of Limbourg'...

One of those, 'is this about what it's about' sorts of song...

So many of the lyrics, so many of the words, are sweet, are clear, are even romantic, and yet this ends up a dark, suspenseful, scary song... To me, anyway...

You know, a friend of mine told me exactly the same thing... I guess it's my mournful-sounding voice and my preference for dissonant(ish) chords that will always withhold me to make a happy summer hit:-( One day I will...
Thans a bunch for your true comment, Ed. Makes me a huge pleasure.

Echoes of Bertolt Brecht
a certain Threepenny feel - very evocative vocals and a haunting arrangement. I like how you worked your inspiration into the end. Well done. I'm off to have a chocolate.

Mmm ... chocolate!
I'm always amazed at how much depth and originality you can bring to a sparse and uncluttered arrangement, as you do in the first verse here. I guess it helps that you have a voice so full of character it could carry a song by itself, but really you are a master of the art of uncluttered songwriting, and making every note count.

The heavier build-up towards the end is terrific ... the cherry on the top of the truffle.

So very crafty.
Thank you for this.
Your vox is intense, as are the chords.
Perfectly constructed and performed.
An inspiration to the creative spirit.
Your sound is deep and calculating,
creating a big screen for the imagination.

Excellent ...
.. production Walter - this really reaches out and grabs. There's no ignoring your presence in this lovely song. There's something about your songs (and this is no exception) that really "clicks" with me. Your vocals have become quirkier, yet at the same time more accessible (and much better recorded), but to me the main change has been the improvement in your confidence in the musical tracks. This sounds really pro quality, and there must surely be a big market for what you do (if that's what you wanted). I'm really happy that you are here sharing this amazing music.

moorlandt said 465 days ago

Thanks so much again for listening and taking your time to comment! So many compliments again that it makes me blush. Haha, I've been looking up the word 'quirky' in a dictionary, but the translation in Dutch is a bit strange. I'm sure you meant it in a positive way:-)
A market for my music? There are times I believe there might be... and there are times I believe the opposite. That's why I'm so happy to be on Sellaband as well. The MJ/Sellaband combination is ideal for any musician: getting feedback from colleagues as well as from regular music lovers. And I can assure you that this is a very polarised matter mostly.

Thanks again, Neil!

Quirky!
Walt, not sure of the official meaning, but to me "quirky" means an unusual approach, individualised if you like - something "outside the square".
I meant it in a very positive way!
