Description This song sat in a folder for a year or so. I had a few hours free yesterday and decided to give it a go. Short and sweet. My first pop tune with strings. Only the drums are loops.
Lyrics Sally sang a song about a mountain
rising from the sea
blue, blue skies and sandy, sandy beaches
a soft and gentle breeze
blowin through the graceful arcing palm trees
a picture perfect scene
Sally’s never been out of the city
she doesn’t watch TV

she’s got a really great imagination
the kind of girl who read a lot when she was young
her records all are scratched and out of their jackets
they skip and make her laugh when the phone rings
watch her run

Sally sang a song about a river
flowing aimlessly
past the towns and through the wild woodlands
winding to the sea
riverboats pull barges from the coal mines
silent and serene
Sally’s lost in Twain’s Americana
her favorite place to be

Excellent tune and vision ..you song writin
is impessive ..I would like to hear your voice
more into front .the strings arrangment is pretty
I like how the song go over all ..welldone my friend !

bud said 475 days ago
Thanks Feter
You're so good a t leaving comments - I really appreciate it. You're right about the vocals being a little low - I guess I wasn't very confident about the strength of the lyrics - so I kept them a little buried. By the same token - I listened to the radio a little this week and got really turned off by the super up front vocals that you hear there.

The Infinites said 475 days ago
Marvellous!
Strings are great, as is guitar.

Nice vision-filled tune - I can see the lines as pictures.

You have a real 'country' voice, I like a lot, easy on the ear, but not bland, great character.

Would have liked it to be longer - the fade came as a surpize, but that's a compliment as I wanted more!

DL'd!

Jim

bud said 475 days ago
Thanks Jim -
Seems we both got the string bug - from what I heard in your latest tune. Appreciate the comments - I purposely worked to keep this song at 3 minutes. My new goal is to keep songs shorter and to the point. It's not a pop song credo - it's just a way of injecting some discipline into my process. And besides - we all have limited amounts of time we can spend here listening.

lengold said 475 days ago
Lovely
sweet song - beautifully restrained playing and the strings work very well. Vocals are sounding very CSNY.
Lovely.
Cheers
Len

bud said 475 days ago
Good comments Len -
This was an exercise in restraint. I tried to play as little as possible on each track and work with as few tracks as possible and to get a full sound. Started with basic drums and rhythm guitar. Added one track of vocals and when I played the bass - I consciously left openings for the next voice (not knowing what that was gonna be). I ended up with Cello for the melody and then augmented with pizzicato strings for accent and orchestral strings for backing.
CSNY are a very nice compliment BTW. Thanks.

skip and make her laugh
nice imagery

the mood of the music fits the lyrics very well.

thanks

bud said 474 days ago
Thanks Smokey
the idea was to make something a little light and frothy.

pizzicato
Hey Bud,
Nice little pop tune. I love pop songs. Very smooth and warm. I agree with the CSNY comment. I also agree with you about the vocals. I actually like them farther back. I do the same thing with mine much of the time. I find most popular music, and actually much of what is here on MJ has the vocals featured too prominently. I quess I hesitate to want to hear my voice too loud as well. It being what it is...ouch.I think it focuses ones attention more on the music, which in the case of this song is wonderful. The strings are ace. I love the pizzicato pluckings, they add a nice "snappiness" if that's a word. Cool.

bud said 474 days ago
I was hoping you'd drop by Philip
thought you might appreciate a little pop ditty. Glad you agree on the vocal level issue - it's just way out of control on most radio fare.

Peter Bauckham said 474 days ago
Great
tune - love the arrangement. The strings work really well. Really catchy. This one will be working its way on to a CD for the car. Thanks for finishing, and sharing, it.

All the best
Peter

I dig your recent tune as well.

Vic Holman said 474 days ago
60's AM hit
Really has a kind of thing that i would remember hearing in the late 60's. Mixed in with Lulu, the buckinghams, tommy roe, etc. And topped off with a appearance on the ed sullivan show. Of course with a mock groovy sixties background set.

bud said 474 days ago
I recently watched "To Sir With Love"
maybe it crept into my subconscious. Do I get to wear a Nehru jacket and granny glasses?

echoroom said 474 days ago
Light little tune..
..that really reminds me of the Auteurs lighter moments. The vocal is very restrained, and gives the track a slightly disconnected feel that I really like. Nice chord sequence on this - i must nick it.

Good stuff Bud...
It's nice to leave one's comfort zone and try new things huh? Your use of strings herein is judicious and effective. Nice lyrics and chord progression. It has a really classic folk-rock sound, or should I say folk-pop? Nice use of drum loops as well.

Be well!

bud said 473 days ago
Thanks Mike
Pirate John got me using the acoustic - and then this tune just took on it's own life. This is the first song where I used the Drums on Demand Vol. 1 Basics I just bought.

The Great Days Of Pop Music
...my childhood, spent listening to the top 40 on my little AM radio when it really meant something. Well, maybe not... but there were these short, crisp and sweet tunes that became touches of colour in the very fabric of the summer, and this reminds me of those days. I'd leave that thing on for hours, patiently waiting for the DJ to play a particular tune... I can still smell the grass, the breeze, hear the song.

I love the simple and surreal, dreamy sound of this - I would have waited quite a while for the DJ to get around to this one. Your voice is relaxed and strong, and easily deserves to be given more of the spotlight, though.

bud said 473 days ago
I'm honored to be added to your AM playlist
I too remember songs like Hang On Sloopy, Mrs. Jones You've Got A Lovely Daughter, I think We're Alone Now, Ferry 'Cross the Mersey, and many more fresh pop tunes that came from my transistor back in the day. Thanks for mentioning it.

Bud!
Ok Whos Sally And when did she run to the phone when her records were skipping. So nice the way you put this together. Its a task I cant achieve I try to make something coherent and beautifull but it always turns out twisted and off beat. The simplicity in this song makes it complex does that make sense. Great job on this one you got me rambling Thanks agian Bud for sharing!!!

bud said 473 days ago
I'm trying a new deal -
three minute songs. Once I get that worked out I'll move down to two minute songs. The Ramones did just fine with 1:25. As a result things get pretty minimal and focused. It's a gift to my fellow jammers - less time listening to my stuff.
I love it when you ramble.

Axgrinder said 473 days ago
Terrific, Bud!
Please forgive my tardiness bro. You have a real Neil young flavor going on here. Kind of a make you smile, feel good and don't worry sort of tune! No, I don't make a whole lot of sense, probably because I haven't got any ;-P Nice work all around. A very nice and relaxing listen that I enjoyed very much!

Thanks,

Ax

for a listen. Your comments make sense to me.

Dj French Toast said 473 days ago
I really
liked the strings in this tune man . Ive been thinking alot lately about what I really enjoy listening to . And ive been taking second listens to music I dont like and genres with stigmas attached to them like polka and big band and classical french and mexican etc... . And from all the music ive been just listening to with an open mind and fluid ear.... music with strings always grab my soul and drag me in .....no matter what the song is about or how it sounds the violin or chello or double bass or viola suck me right in ....not that this song needs my arm pulled to listen to it by any means but I found my being quickly pulled from my body to float with your words and moved by your composition . Indeed a wonderful jam and awesome story as well . I can defenetly relate to jacket less records scattered all over ......its late im goin to bed

bud said 473 days ago
Hey there Benny
Nice to hear about your sound safaris - always good to get out. The cello really does it for me too - it's similar to the saxophone in that it falls within the general vocal range - it has a recognizable voice. I appreciate your comments.

Monkaton said 473 days ago
How about a remix?
The song is good. Maybe a slower version would help to emphasize the lyrics.

Also I would suggest a remix. Bring the vocals up, let your Lou Reed shine.

Good musical ideas that could be fleshed out a bit more, especially the ending.

bud said 473 days ago
Good ears -
this started as a little Coney Island Baby era Lou tune and took a left turn somewhere. I'll consider a remix. This was thrown together extremely quickly. One of those "window of opportunity" compositions. Thanks for dropping by.

what a nice song! for whatever reason, the strings really caught my attention. a simple but very effective arrangement. gotta download this one. :)

Glad you dropped by -
This was my first string arrangement and it was really fun. It opens up a whole different way of thinking about musical lines. Until I started in with the cello I didn't hear the ascending line in the chorus.

Sorry I missed it
Very complete song as far as production and structure. Kind of layered. Strong lyrics.
Did anyone comment that the singing sounds a little quiet?
Oh, now I see Feter did, sorry.
Good song.

Thanks for checking end
I appreciate your comments - yeah the vocals are a little low I agree. I'm having fun with the 3 minute pop format - stay tuned for more.
