Description If it's punk rock yer lookin' fer yer in the wrong place. This here's a traditional ballad tellin' the tale of one Pirate John. A noble vet'ran he was, of the foreign war fought ashore of the south asian seas. We have the most excellent scribe, and me own bruther he is - willnlf - to thank for this touchin' yarn.

Hidden widdin this little ditty is what ya calls a midi file - actually four of em together from a song residin' at Copyright Free Loops. Much thanks to that lot. Sees if ye can't identerfy the hidden loops if ye dare.

I'm mighty beholden to the blokes at LIOLI6 fer launchin' this ship o' fools. Ye should be too. Give 'em a visit an check out me mates - a grand bunch o' singers and players they are.
Lyrics Pirate John got his name
From the eye that he was missing
He lost it back in Vietnam
A search and destroy mission
He woke up in the hospital
A bandage around his head
The patch he wore came later
"Arr!” his buddies said

John grew up in Boston
His father worked the docks
So he went home like a ship
Damaged on the rocks
He took a job on Pier 16
Working with his back
“Yo ho ho,” his buddies said
buddies cut no slack

With Southies in the neighborhood
Where John had gone to school
Being tough, strong and loyal
Was the golden rule
The things he’d seen in Vietnam
Left John a quiet man
He went about his life each day
A safe and simple plan

The marriage didn’t work out
Like he hoped it would
It wasn’t really her fault
She’d done the best she could
But in the end a pirate
Lives a solitary life
John just couldn’t find the space
To share with kids and a wife

So he spends his evenings quietly
Down at Molly’s bar
The echo of the fog horn
Drifting onto shore
He maybe has a shot or two
Never does any harm
The beer he leaves behind him
Half finished and lukewarm

Pirate John is older now
Work harder every day
But he always gets the job done
That’s Pirate John’s way
And when his life is over
His ship has come to rest
Pirate John will rest in peace
He’ll know he’s done his best

arrrgh that sucks
what a great sad yarn you 'n ye bruther tell.
Singing, the acoustic playing is top notch. A very sad tale but beautifully done!

bud said 477 days ago
Thnaks Vic
Will spins a good tale. I asked him to help on this and it seems he pretty much wrote the whole thing in the course of 18 holes of golf. I had it nearly the next day. Guitar props from you are highly valued. Cheers.

Rogues Gallery!!
Funny that the first LIOLI I listened to was this diligent ditty... Very nicely made; that tin whistle (did you play it?) is so perfect a decision, I'm in awe.
An earnest, intelligent and (for me, anyway) difficult pace car for the LIOLI games.

bud said 477 days ago
I played the melodica -
but I couldn't find my penny whistle so I played one of the flutes from GB on my midi keyboard and gave it some filtering and effects. Glad you picked up on it. Thanks for stopping by.

said 478 days ago
Alright!
I love this Bud. I have tons of this kind of music here at home and never tire of it. This sounds like it could have been performed by early Boiled-in-Lead. Excellent work bro!

Be well!

bud said 477 days ago
Great hearing from you Mike
I was channeling Pentangle on this one - one of my favorite outfits. I appreciate the kind comments.

said 477 days ago
Pentangle!
Loved them! And Fairport, Fotheringay, The Strawbs, Horslips, The Pogues, Boiled-in-Lead, Oysterband, The Men They Couldn't Hang, Tempest, Wolfstone, Runrig, Blue Horses; etc.

Great acoustic sound
Guitars are great on this one. Love the atmosphere and the sound in general.
Good story, man.

Thanks go to LIOLI6
for tipping me in a new direction - and to Will for supplying the story. The rest came from messing around in open tuning. Nice of you to drop in.

Lovely
and haunting as the first time I heard it. You've captured the Pirate John of my imagination. Where'd you find the image? Brillant!

bud said 477 days ago
Thanks Will
Couldn't have done it without you. The picture is from google image search "Molly's Bar".

Folk Take
Nice use of the loop and good song to boot. Best part is your vocal sounds pirate like.

Thanks
Bill

bud said 477 days ago
A rather sensitive pirate
don't you think? The sort of pirate you wouldn't mind dating your sister. Thanks for the comments - much appreciated.

lengold said 477 days ago
Lovely
rhythmic feel to this very clever twist on the pirate theme. Excellent playing, vocals and production.
Cheers
Len

bud said 477 days ago
Thanks Len
Will gave it the twist it needed - I only had a vague idea about the sound to start with.

michael2 said 477 days ago
whoa
this is so good. i could care less about the LIOLI aspect of it, it's just a great song (although the fact that you managed to work that MIDI stuff in is amazing). this is very impressive, everything sounds great.

bud said 477 days ago
The secret lies in burying the loops
nice and deep - but well above the high tide. This was a fun challenge. I'd been wanting to do an acoustic number for a long time. Glad you like it.

said 477 days ago
Allright
This is it man oh man !!
could it get any better I am going to need to listen to this a few hundred more times! Almost like ween getting wierd but poingnant at the same time (dont know if thats spelled right). Excellent all around!

bud said 477 days ago
Golly Mr. Ego

Molly's Bar
Wonderful story and vocals and guitar and whatnot. Really terrific mix.

Good to hear you sing like this, bud. You must really have a peg leg!

Avast Ye!

Hank

bud said 476 days ago
Come on down to Molly's
and I'll buy ye a pint. As far as the sining goes - I started out with a full throated Irish tenor - but it seemed too much schtick for the lyrics - so I asked myself - what would Elliot Smith do?

said 476 days ago
Poignant Tale...
Wow... Pirate John is such a strong character; flawed and sad and knowing so much more about the ways of men than any good man should ever know. There's so much more here than seems to be; the beginning of a story... or maybe the end of one.

The music is arresting as well; I didn't expect anything so real and touching to come from a bunch of dippy MIDI loops and a talk-like-a-pirate backdrop! Then again, I've long since learned to forget any expectations with LIOLI and just be amazed at what can happen.

Full share 'o the booty fer ye - and a bottle of the cap'n's best, matey!

bud said 476 days ago
Will gets all the credit
for creating Pirate John and telling his tale. It's great having a brother who can write to order with such creativity. I just asked for a pirate song and along came John.

The loops are buried deep - but I swear they are there. Since the guessing game seems to have fallen away from the round here's my secret. I took all 4 midi files from the Old Timey song and turned them into drum tracks which are pretty far back in the mix - but there none the less.

BTW - "Travolta" is a trip.

echoroom said 476 days ago
Aye cap'n
This is ace Bud - great vox and guitar playin'... this is a great track, but the understated vocal really does it for me... ship shape!

bud said 476 days ago
Thanks Steve
I really respect your opinion - especially on vocals. Glad you stopped by.

perspective
i really like the human angle you took on this. this works really well.

sort of makes me think of A Pirate At Forty - not musically, but conceptually somehow...

beautifully executed

thanks

bud said 475 days ago
Thanks Smokey -
Will took this to a real interesting place lyrically - I was glad I had the challenge to do something diffrent.

bonnieprincejohnny said 475 days ago
I'll have a double malt and a beer please.
Novel take on pirates Buddy and it's refreshing to witness smart. Authentic melody (whatever that means... I'm kinda unfocused it being Saturday morning). What's a 'package bar" ? I think I'd like to spend a few hours at Molly's it looks cool in a strange unsettling way.

bud said 475 days ago
As understand it - a package bar
is a bar where you can also buy beer to take away. In some states here you can't buy beer at the deli or supermarket - you can only buy it at package stores that are licensed to sell alcohol - and hard liquor is only sold in state stores that have yet another license.

Thanks for dropping - the drinks are on the house. Glad you liked the tune.

Nice instrumenation
I like the mix of guitars and melodica, is that a mandolin in there too? Cool understated vocals...very nice
Everyone should have a pirate song in their repetoire hehe
Steve

bud said 474 days ago
Hi steve - thanks for your comments
the mandolin is my Martin D18 played on the 12th fret and doubled.
