Keywords teptep (3)alfalpha (24)will (17)alf (3)orchestral (82)song without words (1)strings (257)cantata (1)
Description Back in October 2006, Will (aka teptep) posted ’tepthing’- an achingly beautiful acappella melody.

What particularly struck me about ‘tepthing’ is the sincerity and passion with which teptep sang this tune- I found myself humming the melody day after day and after a brief email exchange, Will, kindly gave his permission for me to attempt an arrangement of ‘tepthing’ which he rerecorded for this collaboration. We agreed to rename ‘tepthing’ ‘ A Song Without Words’-I've since re-titled it 'Vpcalise', given that is exactly what a 'song without words' (if there is a solo vocal track)....

Will is very humble about his talents. He is an artist who sings from the soul and possesses an uncanny spontaneous ability to create gorgeous melodies.

I thank Will for entrusting me with his voice (yet again) and I hope that I’ve done the tune some justice!

Although this has been submitted under the ‘Classical’ genre, I offer this as a very ‘loose’ term and any other suggestions will be gratefully appreciated!

Teptep’s original vocal line was sung ‘freeform’ and without accompaniment, apart from some ‘cleaning up’ of the original vocal mix, the rhythmic and harmonic arrangement was created around Will’s phrasing and melody respectively, without any alteration to his voice.

The photo of the Merimbula sky at dusk was taken from our backyard on a balmy February evening in 2007 earlier this year.

Absolutely beautiful!
Dude, this is great! It would make a great film soundtrack as either the opening song or closing song. Love your arrangement, especially the harp and bells. Top stuff!

alfalpha said 483 days ago
Cheers Ross...
It has taken a while to put this one together, there were so many options regarding orchestration & editing vocal phrases, but we finally got there in the end!
Cheers mate!

Very nice.
I tried to compare it to the original, but the original is temporarily unavailable. Nonetheless, this is excellent. It really could be used in a film soundtrack.

alfalpha said 483 days ago
'soundtrack'
was a tempting choice, but that's so 'open-ended', I guess? LOL!

I'm not sure why the original is temporarily unavailable, ah well, nevermind.

Thanks so much for the kind comments Doofy! It's really nice to see you here!
Cheers & Regards,
Alf

A rum and raisin please .....
.... no, sorry, that's for somewhere else isn't it ;)
I know how much you admire Teptep's work, and you've really done this lovely piece justice. Dare I say it's like a meringue - take a bite and it blows your mind .... and then it's over (or was that the 70s?).
Very nicely worked. I must get a song together soon that needs piano.
Cheers,
Neil

a Becks for me please!
Will's a hidden gem in this community & a nice bloke to boot.
Hmm, you know, we've plenty of egg whites in the freezer....perhaps we could revisit the 70's for old time's sake?

My piano is available to you any time Neil!

Cheers & speak soon!
Best,
Alf

Yeman, I was initially quite overwhelmed by Will's vocal line, which might explain the time it has taken to submit this, however, I'm really pleased to see you here & many Thanks for your kind comments!

Grandeur amplified and showcased
I agree, you spotted a gem of a melody there, Will does sing those parts really well (as shown by the seamless harmonization when his voice "canons" into itself (sorry, had to say it)... but this also shows off your amazing orchestration/arrangement abilities, what a beautiful setting to wrap around his voice and showcase it. I am very very impressed by your progressions, choice of instrumentation, and careful placing/echoing of the vox. This is a gem of a collab! Two/Dos Kudos!

Drakonis

Hiya Anne!

Teptep (Will's) soulful tune REALLY haunted me....kinda like a pleasant 'niggling' itch, which I needed to scratch...gently.....hopefully!....;)

Anne, I'm so pleased you strolled over to have a listen- even more pleased you took your time to comment....it's meant a lot to me- I know you're quite busy, so you've really made my day!

I'm looking forward to another collab with you, via a 'Jiguma' connection, or.... whatever! LOL! Anytime, any style, any place! ;)

Many Thanks & Best Regards!

Bells
The bell sounds inbetween the vocal phrases are very effective. A bit of Tchaikovsky.

The chord sequence of I - iv - I is very appealing.

The singer sounds sincere, as if truly communicating, which indeed he is, although on a soul-level, and not cognitively.

Beautiful track.

alfalpha said 466 days ago
Hiya John!
Tchaikovsky didn't occur to me with regards as to how I addressed this track.

Certainly, Will's singing was the lynchpin in the way the arrangement 'surfaced', (orchestrally, as well as harmonically)- but, that was MY personal interpretation, which, I suppose, ended up being somewhat in a 'neo Romantic' genre LOL! Well-spotted John! ;)

I don't think I deserve a Tchaikovsky comparison (which is a lovely thing to mention, btw, you're very kind)

Will was such a great sport in this collab- I really think he has much talent in the melody department. I really hope to have another opportunity to work with him again.

Thank You SO Much for the nice comments & the visit John!

Cheers and Regards,

Alf

PS, you know, relistening to the intro reminds me of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 5th piano Concerto's intro (sheesh).....ah well, subconcious imitation might be a form of flattery- (Cheer to Ludwig!)

Very emotive
While listening I looked at your photo for this tune, and it evoked a feeling of watching that sunset while I was floating through the sky of another planet. Whew....

It took me out of my skin. Way cool.

alfalpha said 463 days ago
Steven!
Will's voice seriously gave me that 'out of wordly' experience, & it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to create an accompaniment for his vocals.

We often get quite beautiful sunsets down here in Merimbula, it really is a gorgeous part of the world!

I'm so pleased you popped around for the visit, Steven- even more so that you enjoyed the song.

Cheers & Regards!
