Keywords kind of a radiohead rip-off (1)space (133)space rock (3)i can be such a hypocrite (unintentionally of course) (1)
Description i never know what to put these songs under genre wise, this is along the lines of the last couple. the drums were made on an old analog synth; and theres some gtr and organ. are the vocals too loud? i like to bury them usually. there's not much going on in this one, but i had a hard time mixing it for some reason.

vocals
I dig your voice. It sounds good more up-front than you usually mix it. You may need to clip the intro on the vocal track. I can hear some noise before the vocals start. I also like the simple arrangement. I tend to suffer from the "too much layering" disease. Nice work!

michael2 said 489 days ago
the noise
is actually on the drum track. i recorded the synth through an amp with a mic and my buddy was talking the whole time. ah well, thanks so much for listening.

biba_nova said 489 days ago
What a great track
I love the claustrophobia of the kick drum....and the overall feel to the track

Why did you have trouble mixing?

michael2 said 489 days ago
well
it was mostlt the gtr track, not used to the pocket pod yet, and sometimes it was breaking up not quite the way i would like. i just need to get used to the thing, plus i always have troublw with vocals. you're skills with vocals are to die for.

Vic Holman said 489 days ago
phantom of the radiohead
the cool gothic organ with the tribal beat carries well. I think your vocals coming forward works the best for you. That I think is your strongest asset. (Well your imagination and lyrics go without saying) nice textures with the guitars as well

michael2 said 489 days ago
thanks Vic
it's funny, i've been singing with bands forever, but never really felt any confidence in my voice. started out because i could never find a singer i liked, and figured i may as well do it. thanks for the kind words. P.S. i also feel like my lyrics are my weak point. don't think i'm all down on my self, put me in front of a cranked up tube amp with my tele and I rock.

echoroom said 489 days ago
Like Vic holman
... you have a great level of output, but the quiality doesnt suffer - you're full of gems. This is wonderfully dark .... there's a line 'I feel i could come... undone', I thought you were gonna take down the weird sexual line ... or maybe that's just me.

Beautiful track, michael

Excellent mood ...singin and playin ..
loved the sound of the organ so much !!
no the vocal is not Loud ... and the category
sounds fit rght ...welldone my friend !

michael2 said 489 days ago
thanks Feter
for listening. for a long time i used organ for everything because someone left one in my house that used to live here. I originally wrote this for piano, but decided to change it up because it clashed with the synth-drums, i have another version of it that is a live version with piano, vocals and drums from a show i did on KXLU. thought about posting it, but i hit a few bad chords (it was livce after all).

bud said 489 days ago
You've been busy
and you're on a roll. This is a great track - and I agree with others that your vocals are excellent and where they should be - right up front. I love the delicate tinkling on the background and the light keyboard line against the weight of the beat. The guitar moans are pretty cool too - echoes of sky guitar.

michael2 said 489 days ago
thanks Bud
glad you liked it. i typically mix the vocals back a little more as I have an aversion to commercial radio type of stuff. i always equate up front vocals with that sort of thing, and i kind of like vocals to be more like an instrument than anything. the other day i was listening to the metal station on XM radio and I heard "Holy Diver" by Dio and it was cracking me up. it was supposed to be all heavy, but all you could hear in the mix was vocals and then drums. the bass and guitar were completely buried. when i listen to music from different eras, there always seems to be a prevailing attitude towards mixing, can't really put my thumb on where i want to be just yet.

Nice !
Mikey this is nice song from you, dig your vocal and it's not too loud at all ! the organ sounds really good to me.
for the genre i'm not sure but also don't know where it must be ! but the important thing here is this song is great !

Really Nice
I like this, very nice. Spare and pretty. Vox are fine in the mix for me.

michael2 said 486 days ago
thanks MArk
where are you? we gotta catch up.

buckhorn said 488 days ago
First couple lines
really drew me into the song. You could produce this a hundred ways and it'd still be good. Melody and lyric at the root of it all. I think vocal level depends somewhat on how loud some one is listening. The louder the song the further back the vocal should be ,in my humble opinion. Mixing is enough to drive one crazy. It never sounds in the morning like it did last night. I think if you trust your own excellent ear, and do what pleases you thats all any one could ask for. Regards

michael2 said 486 days ago
thanks
that's an interesting theory (louder the song, the quieter the vocals should be in the mix). makes sense to me actually. thanks for listening, and stopping by. on a side note, noiso is from palo alto and knew James, i wonder if you know him.

Michael,
I think you did a great job with the mix on this. I like the vocals being more up front. I have a tendency to do the same (mix the vocals farther back) but it works this way. The fading in and out of the violining guitars and pads is very tasty. I like the deadened "drums", they sound more like you mic'd you paddling on a guitar case like bongos or something, very cool.

michael2 said 486 days ago
thanks
for listening. it's wierd, there is more to that "drum" sound, but once I started adding stuff, you couldn't hear the little analog noises anymore. it just started to sound like a poorly recorded drum sound. suits the song though, and i'm glad you liked it.

melody addict
we seem to be melody addicts. So I just put your soothing syringe in my brain-vain. Your voice just takes me there, where i want to be, on a nice warm couch with eyes half-open. High on tunes.

nicely done
love your vocal tone... smooth and melodic...might be a little hot in the mix, but it could be my tastes... dont go changing ti cause of me... overall, a nice moody piece. thank you for posting.
Allen

michael2 said 486 days ago
thanks
R.A.D., hey when you say "hot" do you mean "too loud in the mix" or "recorded with the levels too high, on the verge of distortion" ? i think the vocals are too loud myself, but judging by the comments, that's purely a taste thing. glad you liked.

lengold said 486 days ago
This has
a lovely relaxed feel to it that belies the effort you have put in. The voice is exactly right and lovely to listen to. Great song and execution.
Cheers

and commenting Len. really glad that this appealed to you. maybe i'll post the piano version.

Extremely
well done. You have an incredible voice-can't think of anything I would change about that song.Did you sing that straight thru or piece it together? Your intonation is perfect.
Great lyrics too.

michael2 said 485 days ago
thanks for listening
and for the compliments. the vocal was all done at once, and then I went back and fixed the first chorus (didn't like the sound of it). thanks so much for checking it out, really appreciate it.

rainfice said 485 days ago
kid, eh?
I get the radiohead feeling, but this definately has michael2 all over it. (That's a big compliment by the way.) The whole mix is quite nice, I must say.
Vocals are always trouble for me too. I can never seem to let go when i'm recording the way i can when I'm just playing. The vocals here sound great though. I wouldn't fuss over it too much. It's damn near perfect.
thanks for sharing.
-Rain

michael2 said 484 days ago
i know
what you mean: it's realy hard to let go when recording by yourself and not just playing with a bunch of people. could be why I do so much stuff that is on the quiet side. i actually love playing noisy more aggresive stuff too, but I just feel that my vocals are never convincing in that situation for the most part. thanks for checking this out.

rainfice said 480 days ago
subdued
I've retrained my voice over the last few years specifically to accomodate the apartment and townhouse environment. I'm pretty sure we've discussed this before, but anyway now that i'm out of the city again, finally, and I have the freedom to be as loud as I want, I find that the quieter stuff is my new comfort zone, which although I totally love just grooving on something nice, I have my urges to rock the hell out. It's gonna take some effort to get that edge back, because I totally know what you mean about not sounding convincing enough.
Peace,
-Rain
