Too much fun! I've always been a big McGuinn fan, and was really pleased when the request for a bass "session" came in on this - when I managed to extend it to drums and bass I was a happy Cousin Brucey indeed. Amazing that there are 7 of us playing on this, and to my knowledge, none of us have actually met face to face. My favourite parts are Mike's mandolin (even though I thought it was an organ in the first mix) and Vic's electric guitar duet at the end. Great performances all round though, and a heap of fun for me to play on! Mikey - I hope things are going OK for you and that you'll be back behind the kit soon. Best regards, Neil |

Move over Willburys Goodwillys are in town. I love this tune - so much goodness in one package - great hearing all the traded verses. The relaxed tempo and panoramic lyrics are wonderful - and all the playing is aces. |

Wow Thanks for letting me be a small part of this! That line about "You'll starve to death on the buffalo range, and also lose your pay." just cracks me up. I guess it is possible that a widow might collect the wages but I always get that image of a skeleton demanding their pay! |

awesome take on this song. you guys are like the Travelin Wilburies of MJ. This sounds so good, can't believe how clean sounding it is. Hope you guys got a chance to shake the dust from your chaps and let the horses drink deeply when you were done. |

I know the Wilburies have been mentioned a lot here, but it's got to be said... If you all had Irish accents this could be being sung in any venue in Ireland I'm sure tunewise; it just has that lilt. (Wonder if it was written by an Irish imigrant?) A cast of thousands is right too... from all parts of the globe, well done all, M |

all smiles I would like to thank everyone who participated on this. First Mike found this nice little old tune and got the ball rolling. I had the luxury to solo the tracks. Sometimes in a large mix it is hard to follow each instrument throughout. We all know that Neil is a great bass player, but his playing is very lyrical when you can hear it by itself. Scotts piano playing I think really carries the drive for the rhythm. Great work guys! It was a pleasure working with you |

Thank You Goodwillys,... for having me aboard on this one, I really love the song, the lyrics tell such a nice story about cowboys, and the music was so nice, it was a really pleasure to play on!!!! |

Nice Collaboration from you all. Excellent mixing, playing and singing - The different vocals fit in really well together. Good to hear those 'Vic Holman' electric guitar sounds. The Mandolin is a nice touch. Great song really well done! Thanks for sharing. Peter |

Nice! Epic writing. Nice vocals all around. Cool to hear the contrast between all the characters. Reminds me a bit of "pancho and lefty." Good one guys. |

Nice job on those slides and on the mix Vicar!
I'm afraid I know nothing of the history behind this tune. I first heard it covered on an album by a favorite alt-country-rock band the legendary "Shakin' Apostles." I fell in love with their version and decided I would like to cover it.
When I researched the tune online I was led to Byrds alumni Roger McGuinn's website, where he posts acoustic covers of many traditional American folk tunes. (Incidently, that's also where I found "St. Clair's Defeat" and "St. James Infirmary"...) After playing around with it I began to think it would make a great Goodwillys tune, and so this project was born.
Thanks to my Goodwilly brethren and to those hardy guest musicians who contributed so much to making this track a thing of beauty.
Be well all!
