Description Started out as a follow up to "Things Must Change" from the other side of the "couch", but developed into something else.

Play it loud.
Lyrics Somewhere Deep
© 2007 Neil Porter

Don’t feel like staying home tonight
Just feel I want to drift away
And if I’m wrong or if I’m right
That’s for me to learn, not you to say
You’re telling me I have to change
You’re giving me no choices when you do
You wonder why I’m acting strange
You wonder if I’m getting over you

You feel they make it tough on you
They make you want to run away
But please be careful if you do
And please be careful what you say
They’re telling you “you have to change”
They’re giving you no choices when they do
They wonder why you’re acting strange
You wonder why they’re getting mad at you

You can’t ever put things right
You’re the ones that made things like they are
I’m leaving on a midnight flight
I’m going to travel wide and travel far
I’m going to do my best to get some midnight sleep
I’m going to send my demons far away
I’m going swimming somewhere deep
I’m going to do things my own way

Neil...
...why am I thinking "The Police" while I'm listening to this? Not an obvious comparison, but there's something in that guitar I think???

Love the chord progressions going on here - when it drops into the chorus it's totally unepected, and the lead over the top is quality.

Excellent sound as always -
Enjoyed a lot -
Phil

jiguma said 492 days ago
Cheers Phil
Sting is a bit of a fav of mine - "singing bass player" is about the end of the similarity I suspect though. The rhythm guitar in the right channel might give a hint of early Police perhaps. This has been sitting on my hard drive for a while, and I've been uncertain that it's finished - normally I'd have a harmony in there somewhere or a more complex chorus, but tonight when I posted it it just sounded ready somehow. Thanks for the listen and comment.
Cheers,
Neil

Freedom!
Neil, this song is a timely one for me, as I've just stepped into a new freedom, having made the very tough decision to leave a church I'd been an integral part of for ten years. I stayed for the wrong reasons, and had to finally do what was right for me. (I'm going swimmiung somewhere deep" :-) But I digress... Your playing is superb on every instrument you pick up, and your mixing is always professional. Vocals, lyrics, everything is great. :-)

jiguma said 491 days ago
Freedom!
Glad this clicked with you Roxylee. My last four songs have been about change, and this one about running away to bring it about. They all coincide with what I thought was the end of my working life and a move into doing what I want to do with my time rather than what someone else wants me to do .... just recently though, I've been offered a "too good to refuse" deal to go back to my old job. This has brought on lots of feelings about change and my "raison d'etre", and I guess this song is just another expression of what I'm feeling about it all. "Going swimming somewhere deep" is a line I really like - it's kind of exciting, exotic and dangerous sounding, and is a metaphor for so many different things - I'm not really sure where it came from, but I'm pleased I wrote it down when it drifted into my head.
Thanks for your very kind words - glad you enjoyed it.

Feeling Good
This one really gave me a lift this morning. Gave me a real cheery feeling. It makes me wish I had a convertible so I could load this up on a CD, take down the top and go for a ride through the country on a warm, sunny day with this blaring out of the speakers. It's just that kind of tune.

I especially like the last set of verses. That's really where I feel like I am in my life right now and it feels pretty good.

Thanks for this one, Neil. You always manage to really hit an emotional chord (get it? Chord...).

jiguma said 491 days ago
Feeling good
First Joseph, thanks for the positive comments, as usual, always appreciated. That last verse is a kind of "stuff this, I'll do it my way" attitude. Knowing a little about your last year or so, I can immediately see how this would resonate for you (although that wasn't in my mind when I wrote it) - I'm glad that worked for you. It started life as a 2-way conversation between the teen in "Things Must Change" and someone like me wearing my "school psychologist" hat (first verse teen, middle verse me, last verse teen), but shifted sideways as I was writing it.
Ah, a convertible - now that would be good!
Cheers,
Neil

Thanks ..
.. for the visit and listen Mr Boy ;) I enjoy doing these solo numbers but I have to admit to yearning for the good collabs (aren't they all?) or even more, for some live playing. Glad you enjoyed this little tune, the last in my stored up collection of winter produce. I'm hoping for some inspiration for something new over the next week or so.
Always appreciate you listening to my songs!

Love...
...the jam near the end! The whole song is impressive, Neil. Beautiful production. Very full, lush sound. Tasteful bass, too (I expect no less from you). Good stuff!

jiguma said 490 days ago
Cheers Colin
I suspect there are a lot of us (bass players I mean) here at MJ. A great opportunity to dabble in all the more "up front" instruments, and even occasionally have a bit of a sing ;) The jam at the end made a lot of sense to me when I did it, but I wasn't confident that people would agree, so I'm glad to hear you liked it - kind of up and island holiday-ish to me.
Glad you dropped by for a listen!

As I get more into...
...recording techniques, I become more and more aware of when it's being done really well (or otherwise).

You're music/performance/production are all on a consistently high level, Neil. I'm more than impressed...

Love this tune...

Thanks Bob
Our high school motto when I was a kid was "Ardentibus nil ardui" (to strive is to achieve), and I guess that's what I've been trying to do. Lots of striving to learn the ropes, and some results to make it worthwhile. Lots of fun on the way of course. Appreciate your visit and comment.

Nice track
There is a bit of early Andy Summers-like guitar in there: I think its the jangly telecaster sound with chorus that does it. It's a particularly nice rhythm track that compliments the bass really well, though. Some good lyrics too. Good overall mix.

while I was a work today - but there's no sound there which is so frustrating! Anyway, I enjoyed this very much. Good lyrics, tight playing and high production values - Like this little lift towards the end. Good stuff.

Bloody hell
... yeah, little bit of 'walking on the moon' this, but bloody hell the production is good on this neil ... my only slight critique is that I'm nt keen on the bass drum sound, but that's personal taste (it's a little click-y for me). Otherwise, this sounds like you've done this in a studio ... amazing quality. Lovely guitar work all through this, and all the parts are really strong ... pretty stunning, really. The tail out is a particular fav - great guitar melodies.

god, I'm envious

jiguma said 487 days ago
Cheers Steve!
Thanks for the positive comments. The kick sound was (would you believe?) done on purpose. You'll probably notice how closely the kick and the bass are aligned most of the way through - there wasn't enough bite to the bass or the kick, so rather than brightening the bass (which I usually do), I took some bottom off the kick. It sounded pretty right on my phones and monitors, but if you and Michael heard otherwise, I'll need to have another listen to it. Thanks for the use of your ears!
:)

great chord changes and sounds (although I have to agree with Echoroom about the kick). THis is a great song, and the chorus really comes out of nowhere (a good thing).

Really great song-the guitars sound amazing-interesting chord progression.Wish I knew how to do something like this!

well you did it again Neil
Love the overall sound, and the lyrics are very good. Your playing on this one is outstanding. Good rhythm guitar and lead, and I liked the bass line and rhythm tracks.

But being the deaf one in the crowd, even with my hearing aid all the way up there were times when the lyrics were being covered up by the music tracks. So my thought would be to bring the vocal up into the mix a few db to make sure the message is heard loud and clear.

Great work all around Neil. Thanks for sharing this one with us and keep up the good work.

Ed

jiguma said 487 days ago
Probably an accent thing ;)
Cheers Ed, glad you enjoyed it. I always have a problem knowing just how loud to have the vocals in my mix. As someone who still has some reservations about singing, I used to have them WAY back, then , I got cocky and moved them WAY forward, and now I'm trying for a place in-between. Of course it could just be an Aussie accent thing ;)
Glad you stopped in for a visit.

Jiguma rides again!
This is a great 'follow up' to 'Things Must Change', Neil. I noticed the water imagery has resurfaced- 'I'm going swimming somewhere deep'.
I really like the underlying thread throughout your last few songs. Your craftsmanship with words and your story-telling ability never ceases to amaze me....
...oh, did I mention the tune, production & playing is great also?! ;)

I'm looking forward to catching up with you very soon for another 'tale-swap meet'...of the liquid kind!

Cheers!

It happened again...
I'm listening to a few songs when I get a minute, I hit 'play' for a jiguma tune, AND IT'S IN MY FACE...

Getting good with the Ozone, are we?

The neat thing is, to my ears it's loud and full but it has space and I don't hear pumping or other artifacts of non-artfully-done sorts of compression, such as I've been guilty of myself... And, full as it is, it continues to be simpler than many of the jiguma productions of the past... The vibe is one of of relaxed confidence...

I also hear in this something I think of in my own recordings as the 'George Harrison Principle', which is one when one really does the work to take a voice that, while good, is not McCartneyesque in its range, and plays to its strengths, stretching its capacity for comfortable melody... And I do hear a widening range of melody in your latest tunes... I think in your earlier productions you might have handed some of that duty over to your guitars, but now there's more in the vocal, if that makes sense...

I'm a bit tired tonight, and so probably missing some of the other good stuff going on, but I have to say that this sounds very clean, clear and like much of a step up... Once again Cockburn-esque, and, like his songs, I'll probably find myself taking it in more and more with repeated plays...

Ed

jiguma said 491 days ago
Glad you got to this one Ed ..
,, I was going blue from holding my breath in anticipation ;)

I really like your "George Harrison Principal" idea - until I joined MJ (and even early on in my time here) I thought that, to be accepted as a singer, I had to sound like the people I admired as singers (Jack Bruce, Rick Danko, Sting et al). With support and encouragement, I realised that what it's all about is to sound like yourself, even if that means you don't get to sing the style of songs you might prefer. I work on the principal that I do the best I can with what I've got.

As always, I'm really pleased you enjoyed the tune Ed - your feedback is always welcome.

I won't say Police

Sparkling song overall. Guitars are great! And a excellent bass line that I always find lyrical in its own sense.

The outro guitar section is really the topper!

Love that sting
style, though your own of course. The bass and lower end of this tune sound very nice with the arpeggios. The guitar is s unique style. Like that touch of Hawaiian, though very slight. I have said this before but your compositions seems to be maturing with more character as it was a year ago. Not that it was not good further back . You just seem to have more musical paint on your pallet. And making that paint really count in areas were needed.

That is a very good sign of musical growth.

Well...
If it isn't mister, "up the ante"...

This one made me close my eyes and grin, while rockn' the ol' chair like nobodys' watchn'...

Those g'tars seem to expand and swell the mind into pure goodness...

Those six fat strings, they could sink a willing soul, "somewher deep" and into the neighborhood of, sinfully sweet...

Annnnnnd, it sounds like you fired your last drummer and decided to cough up the extra, whatever it takes, to get what your music deserves...

Something kinda headonistic about the listening experience...

If I confessed to how many times this tune has done me, I might be confessing to having cheated...

Can I just say, right on! Neil!

And, thank you, Sir! Dion

thinking CD-wise
I was listening to this song while making dinner (yes, I bought myself a pair of goos speakers for my Mac!) and I thought 'Hmmm... Neil has made stronger songs than this one'. But when the song ended, I played it again. And an other time. The singing melody might sound a bit 'easy' at first listen (that's what I experienced), but the whole groove of the song is what made me listen and listen again. In a way it's very addictive. And more and more when listening to your music, I'm thinking in terms of the upcoming CD. I think I made a big mistake with mine, by making it too overloaded with deep and emotive songs. I realise now that a bit of variation, maintaining the same quality level, is what a good album needs. This song would fit perfectly amongst all your others on the album, Neil. And I'm really looking forward to it...

Hey Jiguma,
Very sweet little smootie you have here. Lots of great comments. It is great sunny Sunday morning just waking up with the coffee kind of vibe to it. My little quibble is the slightly 'canned" sound of the chorus plugin (?) you have applied to the main vocal. The rest of the track is so INCREDIBLY professionally mixed, REALLY excellent tonality. Lots of distance in EQ spead between instruments, nice stereo field placement. Tops.

Quality production! You know your business. I liked everything about it, especially the guitar. The only positive criticism i have is the effect over, or recording of your voice, it made it sound (too) hollow. Since the rest is so pro, it kinda stood out and made your voice sound to upfront. But it could be me and my pathetic speakers (even though i don't think so). GOOD tune! Hats off to you sir.

Really love the production on this one. Especially like the bass playing and the clean guitar sound.
Appreciate the lyrics,pro quality.
You know what, I think it's a shame that people, in general, don't really pay attention to lyrics like they did in the past. Most care only about a good beat and maybe a catchy line.
But don't worry, there are still folks like me who DO pay attention.
Great job
Keep it up.
