Description Hectorious and I have been talking about doing a collaboration since I first came on the scene here. I’d just finished my last acoustic gig ‘till September and knew that, in 10 days, I’d have a two week, all acoustic Vermont vacation coming up. So, when he dangled this bait in front of me, I saw an extremely welcome window of electric opportunity open up.

It’s been awhile. Switching from the acoustic to electric was like hopping out of my favorite saddle and into the cockpit of an F-15 Eagle fighter: “Hmmm...what happens when I push this button...? WOW!!!”

I love Linda’s “Psycho” theme (http://www.macjams.com/song/32628). She's a true talent. I started out doing it note for note. But, as sweet and devious as her voice sang it, my guitar just didn’t seem to want to follow the same path, opting for a more “aggressive” approach, instead. Sort of like “I’m a reasonable guy...but it’s clobberin’ time”!

Anyway...saying that I’m seriously into Hectorious’ stuff is like saying I enjoy breathing air. This tune of his rocks and I’m real glad to be a part of it. Thanks, Hector...

take me down to the whammy bar
gimmie another shot of this, bartender! Very adrenaline-charged soundbed there... guitar-playing was pretty nimble and growly, nice work! Sorta weird, having you switch to electric, and Ziti switch to acoustic... what's this world coming to? Sounds like you dropped into the saddle nicely there! Great collab, you two!
ttfn,
Drakonis

guitapick said 442 days ago
Well...
...it's not a permanent switch, drak. For either z or me (that rhymes). But, yeah: the change of pace is great.

Just ordered your DVD...looking forward to the view.

This is really nice. The track is so energetic and that guitar of yours is kicking much ass. Im upset it ended so soon.

You guys need to do more collabs.

guitapick said 442 days ago
Thanks, SL...
...it would be nice to extend it...probably not anytime real soon, though. This was a great restart for me on electric. Perfect length for the moment.

There will be more collabs with Hector. I'm looking forward to them.

You're having fun, aren't you?
And the weird thing is, that as good as this is--and it's very good, indeed--I have this feeling that over the course of the next year, we're going to come to perceive this "one of guitapick's earlier works"...I don't know what it is, but I can tell that this is you just warming up...

And Hector...what haven't I, and many others, said in praise of what that man brings to bass and production?

This is a wonderful listen, and it's going straight to the iPod...

Enjoy Vermont. I'm flat out envious...

Ed

guitapick said 442 days ago
You know...
...my guitars are very, very jealous creatures. Spend time with one and the others are screaming "What about ME!?".

I will do all I can to find more time for my electrics. I've let the genie out and it's going to be hard to stay focused on my acoustic cd creation. We'll just have to see...

As to Vermont, my friend: I could only wish it was now. I laid down the tracks the night before I left (finished at 4:30AM on the 16th of August), spent my 2 weeks in paradise, and am now returned and teaching the youngsters daily.

Thanks, Ed. How's the Taylor? And the Tele?

Great axification Bob
there are a number of lines here that are just killer in their tone and intelligence. You and Hectorious make a great pair. I agree with Ed - this is just the beginning. Looking forward to more.
Have a great trip.

"Axification"...
...what a great word. Have to make up a new dictionary. "Dictionapalooza"...

Glad you liked this. It was a blast to do and I'm looking forward to more, too.

Also: thanks for the festival. I've saved some for next summer. Cool stuff...

In some ways...
...this flies outside my comfort zone. More precisely, I don't "understand" this kind of music in my bones and blood. Nevertheless, I find it full of amazing energy and some mighty fine guitar pickin'. Ed and Ed (above) pretty much nailed it in terms of critique: great production, wonderful playing, and an infectious enthusiasm that is impossible (that "impossible"!) to resist, even for squares like me. Nice job all around. Congratulations on a fine collaboration. Wow.
Peace.

Glad you can appreciate the energy, Paul. Good of you to drop by. Always looking forward to your next...

Outstanding Guitar work here .very much reminds
me of Hendrix ..just cool .the bass work impressive
too .. MJ colab always top .. KUDOS my friend!!

I've had...
...lots of influences. But Hendrix was my biggest. I love Jimi Hendrix. So it's no surprise you hear that in there.

Thanks, man...and yeah: Hector rocks...

Great playing Bob
Love the electric playing - sounds amazing. I'm not sure if it's my 'phones, but the mix sounds a bit unbalanced - lots of percussion, but bass and guitar a little more in the background than I'd have liked. Maybe it's just my ears. Anyway, some really tasty licks there.
Neil

guitapick said 442 days ago
Ahhh, yes...
...as much as I'm comfortable with my guitar, my 4 months of recording experience is not quite what I'd call "adequate".

I'm rehearsing with a trumpeter 'till Saturday. Might revisit this and remix to see what I can do about it after that. I can play with the percussion sound in the compressor eq. I'll give that a shot. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. When I listen on my speakers it's got a better balance and is bassier, but I can hear what you're talking about.

If I git it done, I'll post it as a remix. As always, thanks for the visit, Neil. And congrats on your new tune. Wonderful it is.

Now I have to recalibrate my pace maker. What a cool track. Atonal madness. Nice off time pickin and the tone is monster sounding. Hector: kudo on another killa sound bed and bass lines to die for.

guitapick said 442 days ago
Thanks, ATB...
The tone: when I decided to practice the electric for this, I worked exclusively on my Boogie. Great, great tone and I was psyched.
Recorded late night with wife and kid asleep upstairs. Unplugged the speaker and plugged into the slave outlet. Talk about NOISY! Couldn't use it.
Checked out the GB Arena Guitar sound. W-O-W!!!! Blew me away. Stuck with it. Love the tone. That's all I used on this, with some delay.
I'll check to see what's what with the Boogie (tubes rule, so far, in my world), but I'm amazed at the GB guitar sounds. Really something.

A mashup for the ages
It's like Al DiMeola fronting for Massive Attack. Pure shredderific guitar goodness layered over a totally phat bass groove and driving rhythm.

guitapick said 441 days ago
Hmmmm...
...cool name/avatar. Looking forward to checking out your homepage.

I used to love DiMeola. Especially his work with Return to Forever ("Romantic Warrior" album rocked). Saw him on both acoustic and electric a few times. Flattered by the comparison.

Hectorious is a serious musician. Real happy you liked this.

guitapick said 440 days ago
High praise, indeed...
...considering the serious degree of virtuosity I've heard from players on this site (names have been omitted to protect the innocent).

I wish I could agree with you...I...er...think...uhhhh...golly..."I'd like ta thank my ma"...

Honestly...that's a really nice thing to say. I, personally, think there are some other electric monsters around here who could gobble me up as a snack. But I DO put every bit of my heart into what I play. Very happy you caught that...thank you.

Calchas said 430 days ago
I agree...
...that there are other guitar "monsters" here at MJ, but while I have no right to be included amongst them you have definitely earned a place in select group. Don't sell yourself short friend.

BTW: I also agree about the passion. Some folks think if they're loud enough and fast enough that it somehow equals passion. But that's bull. Passion comes from HEART and not testosterone. And you play with heart my friend.

Rock on!

I'm just going through my own rediscovery of electric guitars after years of bashing away on an acoustic so I know how it feels! They're so sensitive and responsive, and then you have all those fun goodies in GB to play with ... yum.

Very nice performances here and it does sound like you're enjoying it and getting well into the zone. Well done both of you!

Sounds...
like you were born to play that MusicMan. The tracks have a very "secret agent" feel to them. Congrats on your first electric piece. Its great to see you branching out to a new direction.

Chris

guitapick said 432 days ago
Thanks, Chris...
...the MusicMan rocks the house. You'd love it. I was going to go for an Ibanez (I think you know how nice they are), but chose the Silhouette for the interchangeable pickguard/pickup perk. I also loved the neck.

Turns out I still haven't gotten another pup setup...but the neck's still killer.

Yeah...this was fun. BTW: you look great in green.

---
I live between the notes

guitapick said 430 days ago
OH GREAT...!!!
I just realized that my above response will still be here long after pickquick's avatar is changed.

My response: "...btw: you look great in green" has to do with that avatar. It's a green alien head, jaws moving up and down. He'd just changed to it from another.

I absolutely am NOT making any allusion to "green with envy". Anybody that reads this and knows Chris will know that he is a jaw dropping monster on the guitar. Envy is about the furthest thing I could imagine from the guy's mind.

So...let that be very clear for any sound archaeologists who happen to dig this up in the future and see an avatar of, say, a pink elephant...

wow bob
cool, psychedelic, free playing - u gave free rein to your instincts and created something completely unexpected out of that 007 theme -- 10s across the board from me. this was a welcome surprise - you should experiment with mixing electric and acoustic - your imagination may cook up something delicious and decadent.

guitapick said 428 days ago
Hello dj...
...yeah, I've been rolling some stuff with my acoustic and Les Paul around in my mind. The Paul can get this "noble" sound (for lack of a better word, I guess) that I think works very well.

John Williams (classical guitarist...not the composer) used to have a band called "Sky" which featured an excellent electric player on a Les Paul and Mr. Williams on his classical. Great sound.

Glad you liked this...always looking out for your next...

Hectorious is da groove master indeed. I can imagine what a treat it must have been to play da geetar on top of this one.

You show a stunning performance on the musicman axe:)

All in all, a cool mix of loops and live performance

guitapick said 412 days ago
Yep...
...I was really happy when he asked me to do this. Hector can definitely walk the walk...

Bought the Musicman when I was gigging as an "all around" guitar...didn't need to bring both Strat and Les Paul to the shorter gigs that way. Ended up bringing it to almost all the gigs...short and long. It's a really nice ax. Very light and a dream to play...

Appreciate the visit, Thor. I love "Turn Hate to Love"...
