Description Close your eyes, and come with me. It is a warm Autumn eve in the Black Forest. There are ancient folk tales about this magical wood... how late at night it comes to life with mischievious fairies and wood nymphs. Any mortal who hears the unusual, hauntingly romantic dance music, will be enchanted, drawn into the heart of the forest, and will never return. Hush! Do you hear them? They're calling, gathering for the dance...

---------------------
Extra Notes: I wanted to create an unusual dance, something that felt just a little off-kilter, strange, but catchy at the same time. I wrote a melody that switched between minor and major, and also wrote an unusual rhythmic "loping" feel between the cellos, strings, and clarinets. It is in 4/4 time, but doesn't want to be... I'm dubbing it a "faux-trot". For all of us who have delightfully quirky eternal romances. Eternal thanks to my wife who inspires me to write music, and guided and critiqued this piece so thoughtfully. She really wanted the middle section to be a full-fledged-fugue, but it is a simpler canon ("round") for now until I learn more about composition. Thank you also to Roxylee, Paul Page, Ceilidh, and Feter, for additional critiquing.

An early version of this was my prior "Dancylvania" piece, where I stopped partway through composing it, and created a rough draft with gothic organ, just for fun.
Hardware Macintosh dual 1Ghz G4, eternal romance on Autumn nights
Software: Harmony Assistant and GarageBand, conversion to MP3 by "LAME" MP3 converter.

Wow Drakonis,..
you are amazing, more enchantment, it goes without saying exception compositional skills. I love the photo, the mind's eye. This is in contrast to your last Romanian accordian street piece, but really you have an uncanny ability to portray a magical world.

exceptio-anal?
I think that perfectly describes me working late into the night, composing music one eighth-note at a time! :-)

I'm very pleased to know that this evoked a magical world for you... that was the intent. The story and music evolved together, and by the time I finished the music this weekend, the story was complete and I just needed to write it down.

As for the photo, it looked a little like an eye to me too, so I cropped it, tinted it moonlight-blue, and added a dash of radial zoom-blur to the edges to give it an eerie dreamy feel.

Thank you for listening and commenting, Ian!

ENCHANTING...YES!!!
I love how all the woodwinds dance together with the bells and i love the switching back and forth from minor to major......it difinately puts one in the spirit of adventure. This is a ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!! :D)

dance of the woodwinds
Funny, but I was thinking of how to intertwine the flute and clarinet while writing this to sound like they were dancing (along with them doing the initial call to eachother at the beginning) so I'm glad you heard that! So glad you liked this enchanting adventure, I appreciate your comment a great deal!

Fae faux-trot
Can't beat magical woods ... I've spent a lot of time in magical woods over the years, both in the physical world and in my head.

I know nothing about classical music so I can't say anything intelligent about your compositional and arrangement skills except that it sounds really nice! Great melodies interweaving, and the delicate bells contrast beautifully with the deep dark cello.

I reckon if I went into a magical wood with this on my iPod I'd be straight down the well of vision and into the world of faery. Wheeeeee!

drakonis said 492 days ago
Autumn Fae, stay away!
Nope, you can't beat magical woods, they beat right back, with a vengeance! Of the people with a head for things ethereal and misty, I'm very happy to know this met with your approval. I'm not sure how this happened, but it sort of took over and began to write itself over the past few weeks, bending itself into what you hear here, and the story unfolded as well. Now if only I could find out what those little flecks of gold powder are on my pillow every morning...

Feter, thank you again for your early thoughts and encouragement. The round in the middle was a lot of fun to create, but also quite complicated to make it fit together, flow and build, and not get really boring. It started out really boring, and at one point I almost gave up and took it out. It is amazing what a few changed notes, a swelling cello, and a sprinkle of fairy dust will do! You too write and play really gorgeous music, thank you for sharing your music and your time, my friend!

As far as magical woods and classical music go. I was getting a mix of Nutcracker Suite and Hansel and Gretel :) Some lovely, thoughtful sounds Eduard, and an incredible ear for detail.
This is really enjoyable listening.
"Faux-trot" - now THAT's funny!

Englebert Humperdinck, or Grimm?
Hansel und Gretel? Haven't seen the opera (yet), only heard snippets of the music... but read the Grimm's fairy tale to my kids. I've always loved Tchaikovsky's ability to whip out great tunes (even though he HATED the Nutcracker, he thought it was the worst thing he ever wrote), and so I'm terribly flattered to have you make a reference there. Every time I embark on one of these projects, I learn so much about writing music... mostly I learn that there's sooo much more to learn. But I'm having fun, and if you're enjoying my work along the way, then I will let out a silly "YIPPEEEE" and try to regain my composer, uh, composure. Thank you for listening and commenting, Neil!

Yes, this is truly enchanting and the instrumentss complement each other very well. It weaves between minor and major, drawing us deeper into the Black Forest Dance. I love the little bells that add lightness and mystery. At the end, the Forest "wins," which is the perfect ending. As usual, your attention to deatail really shows in the quality of your work. I'll be humming this all day. :-)

Fireflies
I don't know if they have fireflies in the Black Forest (if they did, maybe it wouldn't be so black), but this reminds me of watching fireflies dancing around in the dusk. An excellent work. I hear what you're saying about it kind of straining against the 4/4 time, but that gives it such an interesting feel. It gives an energy to the melody. Almost as if it just wants to break loose and dance across the meadow.

A wonderful, wonderful piece of work, dragon man!

drakonis said 491 days ago
sorry no fireflies there
And no brasses in this piece (I want to write for french horns in my NEXT piece though!) Initially there was even more straining against 4/4 (you can still hear the really lopsided feel in my prior Dancylvania version of this)... but it got too weird after a short time with the strings and cello, so I re-aligned them a bit to make it less awkward. But I still left some parts of the dance sounding a little more chaotic and wild (in a very structured way :-) Glad you liked the result! Off to check on your latest too!

dear drak
i LOVE the idea of the dark forest and all the fairies and forest creatures coming to the middle of woods to a little lea flooded in a moonlight, to have their midnight fairy dance. the effect is SO enchanting and fairy-taleish. with this magic story behind it is so wonderful to listen, to be taken away with that subtility, delicacy and tenderness of the music because it captures the image so wonderfully and so magically. you know already all my opinions, but i have to say again the flute is simply STUNNING and the bells... they do the magic... wonderful. i love the cello, what a great contrast with gentle bells. the calmer mid part fits to the story very well, because it is just exactly the moment, when in the middle of dance every dancer needs a little break, just to rest a little, just to catch a breath and then back to the swirl of dance again! i love that little jewish triplet, thats my weakness, i've told you already :) all in total it is truly a magical and wonderful piece of music edo. i love it. splendid.

drakonis said 490 days ago
spending time in my forest
Thank you for taking time to listen to early drafts as I worked on getting everything just right. I think it was you who said "more bells!" so I sprinkled more in there. The forest is a mysterious place, exciting and dangerous. And this dance, heavy on the woodwinds, just kept telling me this story. I see the middle section as a time when everyone takes a rest EXCEPT the two main dancers, who do their own spotlight dance for a bit.

Anyway, I appreciate you critiquing and listening again, now that this is finished. And I definitely look forward to something new from you, Paja... it's about time, don't you think? :-)

you wouldn't feel sterilized and without a will in an air-conditioned room in a hotel, where you can not even open a window? outside 40'C and humid, inside 15'C with snoflakes falling down if air-conditioning on, or 40'C and humid if air-conditioning off. ferdasek says that that "deaf" feeling the room has, has every recording studio. is this really a truth?! it is SO unpleasant. i somehow don't have any inspiration here i have to say. not excusing my self. it's just how it is. where do YOU find your inspiration? i need a tip!

Hmm... I don't know of anybody who would want to "live" in an air conditioned studio day and night. Inspiration for me comes from getting outside, meeting real people, driving and hiking through forests and deserts... we actually got pretty close to the "Real" Black Forest when we were in Bavaria... what's left of it. You are traveling many places, try to learn about the people and area you are in while you are there. It will give you inspiration later. For now, draw inspiration from places you have been and people you have met. There are a lot of stories there. But sometimes the stories won't show themselves to you unless you break out of your routine. Go on a little adventure, do something different while you're in Texas. Shake up those thoughts! :-)

like the trees. It's remarkable that you are able to make each track (instrument) dance on it's own, while conforming to the song as a whole. Your classical influences are really highlighted here.

I like that we hear the growl of the bowed upright bass, but I'm wondering if you could add in a plucked bass line. You really embrace the 'standards' of the ethnic genres. It's a flair that's uniquely Drakonis. :-)

How nice to have you sway in to listen! Funny you should mention the pizzicato bass... I was actually having trouble early on with the bass line being too monotonous, and thought of different ways to break it up, and adding a plucked section was an idea I almost went with. Instead I altered the bass pattern in spots, and then forgot about that idea... thank you for reminding me of it again! I may try that, either on this piece later, or on my next piece. A lot of attention to detail here.
A very delicate touch of a pleasant tune.
I wasn't sure about the droning breath-like cellos or accordions?. Maybe a little sharper or varied attack might have livened them up for me. Still a catchy and likable tune here Eduard. Nice work.
Best,
Charlie

Is it Celli in here?
Hi Charles, thank you for listening and commenting. The "droning cellos" gave me a lot of trouble, I kept rewriting the bassline in areas to keep it from getting too monotonous... I think you're right, I need to do better there. MissChaos suggests some occasional pizzicato, which might be fun. I need to study more bass-line writing! Leave me alone .. I am having fun !!!!! (apparently the light voice has the last word in this one) ! Isn't it interesting tho .. how many facets the human brain has in it's capacity to interpret a musical piece in so many different lights.

oh, Alannah...
how I've missed you, and this is why :-) I always love your bold, interestingly fresh take on things. I Can definitely see the interplay here as you describe it, in fact, it's a bit uncanny, maybe I'll keep my blinds closed next time I'm writing music, its a little disconcerting to have you peeking into my brain like that! Thank you for visiting me, sorry for being so disconnected lately, I miss our side-splitting wordplay silliness.

Thank you for listening, H'un, and offering some of the impressions this was hinting at, that's actually very helpful and insightful to me! I think there *is* a bit of Russian and Slavic influence in my music. And of course, I'm happy it is something you enjoyed. I'll keep learning and practicing.

Welcome to Macjams... I shall hop over and return the favor and learn about your music now too! Stravinski is one of my heroes, he is on the edge of the modern stuff I can tolerate... he could push the weird melodies and rhythms, and get away with it. I have a long way to go before I can get there, but I'm very happy to know that you enjoyed this unusual piece. I learned a great deal putting this together. One of those stretch-n-grow goals.

Geez, Eduard! This is terrific and shows your tremendous growth as a composer and producer. I absolutely love it and the flute part, especially. I think this would make wonderful theme music for a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. You've captured the wonder of true love with your lovely music.

Also, I really don't want to think about how you did this with the pencil. It hurts my head. I'd rather just daydream to the music.

drakonis said 485 days ago

Thank you for checking up on me... and thanks for the generous compliment on my progress. I have a thing for flutes (I was traumatized in High School band, as 2nd chair clarinet, having to read my music instead of staring at the cute flute players across the way.) I have romance in my blood, and I'm finally feeling like I'm gaining some musical ability to articulate it in music... it helps a great deal to have people like you let me know if it is coming through, so thank you again! I will keep trying bigger and more complicated things... I still have lots of pencil left! BTW, I show a little bit of how I write music in the "Behind the scenes" part of my Technoids DVD (luckily it is a really short bit!) The software I use is a little easier to use than the pencil tool in GarageBand, but it still can be pretty tedious... I really need to learn to play piano/KB someday so I can enter notes faster! :-)

I'd say this is in the "fantasy" genre. I could hear it in a soundtrack to a movie like *Willow*.

It IS reminiscent of the "Transylvania" piece. You could make this into a series.

piece-i love the counterpoint in the middle.Do you write any of this down on paper or is it all done on the computer? I have no idea how this is done, but I am very moved an impressed by this music.Fantastic!

drakonis said 485 days ago
cross-pressed!
Well, I'm even more impressed by *your* gorgeous music and skill in playing the guitar.

I sometimes write things down on paper, but they are usually art/drawings, that then inspire me to sit at the computer and tinker with melodies and harmonies until I get something to capture the music I hear in my head. So to answer your question, I go straight to the computer and start "typing in notes" to snatch the melody, then I work on adding accompaniment, usually. Then I muck around with the instruments to choose better voices, THEN I push it over to GarageBand to do the final touch ups. But I have the original music in software that can easily transpose, print guitar tablature/fingering, print symphonic sheet music, export to MIDI, etc. But doing this a note at a time is one of the reasons why I don't write very much music :-)

Thank you for listening, enjoying, and commenting on this latest piece of mine!

now there's a movie I've not seen in at least a decade! "Fantasy movie soundtrack" music is definitely flattering! And I appreciate you listening/comparing it to its rough predecessor too... this full orchestral version is what I originally had in mind, and "Dancylvania" was a quick smirky snapshot along the way. Now on to the next project... hmm...

Your song sounds good...needs a live orchestra to make it utterly sublime. This is magical, organic and spheroid.

drakonis said 485 days ago
What? Not oblate?
Live orchestra, you say? Well, I can print the orchestral score for each instrument, it's ready to go... all I need is an orchestra... Where's a royal Hapsburg patron when you need one? Getting really close to sublime is quite nice to hear, thank you for listening and dancing in the moor-light!

Perhaps neither spheroid or oblate -- it is hyperdimensional, existing here/now, there/then and everywhere/spandex along parallel rifts in Moorclavian temporal-spatial fabric.

Hmm.. that was a stretch... anyway, no, not my photo (though I took one like it long ago)... the musical Serat
I love the shuffle between the minor and major in the theme... just like the art you chose... this had a shimmering quality... I always wonder what it is like to be a fly on the wall when you do your stuff... do you hear it out front? does it emerge as you work?... flumoxed here... either way your final result is marvolous, if not somewhat alien to me... this has a animated feature soundtrack quality about it... visual as one would expact after seeing your dvd clips...

your a creative guy, seen in your music and your consistant original humor that spans the entire site

Bridge over the river Styx?
Que Serat Serat? :-) Thank you very much for listening and commenting, Scott! You have a great ear for melody, and I enjoy your guitar work a great deal. A fly on my wall would probably find that a lot of tedious work goes on because I've not learned to play a keyboard, so I can't get the notes into the computer very fast. The creation and visualization goes on constantly in my head (and there are no flies allowed in there!) But as you are noticing, I'm a very visual person, and it is imagery that often spurs the music in my brain. Unfortunately I'm not very good at art either, but I try really hard, and I have a lot of fun with what I can do and learn. Life may be bittersweet, but I wholeheartedly believe that it is a lot better than the alternative! So I'm livin' it!

variations on Gothic Pagan theme...?
...perhaps- it's only my opinion, as this is the type of imagery being conjured up in my imagination- maybe it's the 'minor vs. major' 'tug 'o war' being waged. Very Eastern European, in a Dvorak kinda way...(which I love, btw)

The orchestral roles of the woodwind & string sections are right on the money. I love the countermelody of the clarinet against the flute theme, which cleverly becomes a variation of the main theme in its own right. How DO you make the clarinet & flute sound so real?!

The strings sit nicely in the background, and the cello 'ground bass' is perfect for this ensemble, as it gives the piece a 'baroque' twist to the Eastern European Gothic Pagan sound (now, how's THAT for a mixture!- possibly not too surprising, given the imagination of the composer from whence it came!)

I keep listening to this over & over, and I fear I'll take up the entire page with commentary...

This is really lovely, Eduard and bears testament to your understanding of orchestration, with the added bonus of a wonderful imagination.

Many Thanks & Cheers,

Alf

drakonis said 483 days ago
talk about careful listening in return!
Thank you very much for your much valued thoughtful comments, Alf!

Gothic-Pagan? Anglo-Saxon...? hmm.... there's definitely a hodge-podge of influences in my mental blender, and Dvorak's near the top of my list too. I worked for a long time on each set of elements, the strings, the cellos, the handling of bits of theme through the piece, then I sprinkled some fairy dust on the instrument samples to make them come alive (OK ok, seriously, one of a few techniques I used to make the flutes/clarinets/strings to sound more realistic, was to mark ALL notes that were 1/8th or shorter and pull them to a separate instrument/MIDI track on export... then when it imported into GB, I assigned the track with the long notes to the legato instrument, and the short notes to the staccato version of the instrument... this worked really well.)

I also noticed I'd not faved you! Eek! That's fixed now. Thank you again for your great whimsical and serious music here!

Nutcracker
Reminds me of the "Sugar Plum Fairy" from the Nutcracker, with the celeste parts, played on top of the strings and woodwind parts. Tchaikovsky would find much to like. I think Prokofiev would also hear echoes of "Peter And The Wolf" now and again.

Your computer chops are really impressive. Sounds very convincingly orchestral.

drakonis said 482 days ago
Type casting Celesta
Yes, unfortunately the Celesta isn't used much, so most people associate it with the Sugar Plum Fairy dance... wait, maybe I did that too! Argh! I also grew up loving Peter and the Wolf, and almost learned French Horn in band because of that piece, but the clarinet was cheaper, so I learned to play the "cat" theme instead :-) Thank you for lending an ear here... I guess I have a lot of Russian influence... and I have been reading Rimsky-Korsikov's book on orchestration too, which will only make matters worse (or better?)

I'm a nut for your classical/jazz piano twists, please keep those coming, they are a delight!

Let me say...
... that I am completely blown away by your ability to bring to life the performances portrayed in this piece. The woodwinds have so much depth and emotion. Your use of strings is superb. My only other thought is I would liked to have heard a little more "room" ambience. You must, and should be, very proud of this aural accomplishment.

The Pencil-Maestro!
Alimar, thank you for listening and offering your thoughts on this... I'm quite happy with how it came out, and I'm even more happy to know it speaks to you! I'm fighting my urge to pack every rest with a note lately, and am now leaving more room for things to breathe. In my crowded past pieces, any extra room ambience caused instant muddiness, so I've always been stingy with the AUMatrixReverb. Now that there's more "air" in this one, I think your very perceptive ears are right, and I could add a little more concert-hall reverb to this. I will tweak that for a post-MJ version of this, and will use a dab more in my next piece too. I always appreciate your critical ear and thoughtful comments, thank you sir!
