Lyrics Half A Million Miles
(by Phil Dolby ©2007)

Six o’clock and workers are all heading for their cars
For the evening migration home
Staring into tunnel vision, pumping on the gas
Push the air conditioned zone
They have no idea that the time
Is getting ever nearer death
But the engines keep on humming
As the clock just keeps on ticking
To the planets last resentful death

Half a million miles away
His kids are playing truant
So he takes another long haul flight
From the demons in the middle of the night

8.00 a.m. and mothers are all escorting their sons
And daughters in their four-by-fours
To school gates where the teachers just look on in grim despair
And wait for them to take them home
They have no idea that these wheels
Were not designed for city crawl
But the engines keep on running
And the clock just keeps on ticking
As they plough on through the urban sprawl

Half a million miles away
His wife is being nailed
By a salesman with a pack of lies
So he turns his head up to the sky

Another day another place another kind of heaven
For the businessman so far from home
Another hotel lobby for a meeting that could happen
By Internet and mobile phone
They have no idea that the deals
They broker now will make no sense
On a planet still revolving
Where the problem they are solving
Is of mankind in the former tense

Half a million miles away
The place he loves is empty
He never stopped to wonder why
He took another long haul flight
Took another long haul flight
Took another long haul flight

nice
bit of fun with a serious message. Good to see you're keeping up the protest. Good lyrics on this... but these mothers with the gas guzzlers DO know they weren't meant for the city... it's a fashion and a competition at the same time. Now you've really got me started LOL, Cheers Phil

Kinks meet the Sex Pistols - a lot of fun Phil! And with a serious message to boot. Nicely put together.

Thanks Neil
I have a 50,000 mile (and climbing) carbon footprint in the last 12 months, so the irony of writing about the evils of modern transport hasn't passed me by!

But at least I no longer own a car:-))

Thanks for dropping by -

ktb is right
I stopped by a couple of weeks ago to listen to BOTH of your songs...
but they'd been gettin down with each other apparently, and suddenly there was an album's worth of tunes on your page!
This is great stuff, but I'm going to go against the grain and say this isn't punk at all: it's cheery, well-crafted pop. And it's all good.
I like this personal quest you're on, too. I did the same thing; and I reccomend it highly!
Off to listen to the rest.

Thanks Sonny Jim
Appreciate you dropping bye and raiding the back catalogue.

Most of the recent posts were recorded over the last year. As I've tweaked the mixes I've uploaded them to the site - so I'm not being *that* prolific :-)

Glad you're enjoying the music,

Cheers,
Phil

Again with the brilliant lyrics this time with a foot tapping rhythm. Awesome.

LOVE THIS
This is a top track for sure. Lyrically it reminds me of Pedro the Lion's "Indian Summer", but this has it's own lyrical personality that makes it a distinct track. My only complaint is the drums, but we're the same in that regard. I have to either use GB loops or pencil drums, and I'm not crazy about either. I'm thinking about Drums on Demand. Anyway, this track is absolutely tops in my book. A story told well. Thank for this!

got turned onto this by eric's cover. awesome song, man. Really really well written. Those lyrics are amazing and I love what you've done composition wise. glad I got to hear this

I listened and I liked what you did
The lyrics are well written and the backtracks are well put together. You vocal sound hollow to me, like you were phoning them in, which of course was probably what you wanted. I'm from a more traditional age and music style so it doesn't sound right to me, But then again I AM from a MUCH older age.

Very well done as far as the levels in the mix, and I do have to admit, the vocal came through loud and clear.

Cool song Phil, thanks for sharing.

Drawn here after hearing the cover of it in the MJ Covers Challenge. So soory I never got here originally when you posted it, but hey, better late than never. Great lyrics and jumpy punk thrash beat. One small quibble. I think the lyrics are a little too forward (but I think that about everything), I guess I am just wanting the guitars more in my face, because they are soooooo tasty.
