Description This is another song (more of a sketch really) created in a hotel room on my pokey G3 iBook running GB1. This time I'm in Austin Texas - remembering the weekend I just spent with my family on Long Island.
All loops and two freesound samples - one surprisingly from our own smokeyVW. It's a recording of his worn out fruitsaver (don't ask me).

http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=37815 smokeyvw

http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=38544 erh

Vocals were recorded with the pinhole mic.

This is as lo-tech as it gets.
Lyrics water dripping from the branches
smell of lavender and hay
sun glints off the wires that run
from the tilted barn

hammock swaying in the breeze
diving redwings flashing by
time just hovers at the cloud’s edge
thrumming like a dragonfly

if there’s another place to be
at this very moment
it will have to wait for me
I can only be here now

sunset comes quietly
slanting amber honey rays
swallows fill the sky with arcing
traces as they meet the night

Wasn't
expecting that Bud. It's strange that lo fi doesn't matter at all when there is something interesting to listen to. I really like this - very haunting.
Cheers
Len

Thanks Len
I love lo-fi for texture and that's what this piece is about sonically - texture. Glad you enjoyed it.

Eyebrows raised...
...a real dichotomy between the lyrics and the soundscape behind. The lyrics are peaceful and contemplative (perhaps a touch wistful) while the audio seems like brain feedback machines slowed down to a single idea impulse, then frozen and stretched to infinity. I don't know where I'm being taken. Not sure if I'm supposed to know.

Very unusual. Still thinking about it. Very cool ride, Bud.

bud said 511 days ago
Not sure I understand either
but I was drawn to creating this contrast - thinking that perhaps the soundbed would be background and that I would create a more "musical" frame around the lyrics after I sang them. I still may - but I decided to post this sketch in the meantime. After listening to it today I think it sounds a little like what Syd Barrett was hearing in his head while singing pastoral Floyd tunes like Cirrus Minor.

drone
Bud,
Love the drone. Been listening to a CD of the Black Angels that I got as a present from echoroom Steve. You might like them, if you haven't heard them yet. The "music" seems pretty quiet and the vocal pretty loud as they relate to each other. But maybe that was the intent. Love the darkness.

bud said 511 days ago
Thanks for the Black Angels tip
new to me. I love a good drone and had fun making this one. I thought of having it stand alone - then I challenged myself to lay write and lay down a vocal in the half hour before dinner with the agency. I ended up fronting the vocals for separation and to keep my ears open for another layer.

About the singing
This song was influenced by the German band Notwist and I tried to sound like English was not my native language without actually using an accent. I was going for the international English intonation.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

this brings to mind a blurry tv news channel while half asleep, but you cant turn it off. Sitting in the motel... you cant turn it off, and you wont take the chair out from under the door knob! You get up and write the lyrics quikly and its off to dream land. Well at least thats what it make me see... I always love a play on contrasts.. an almost frightened voice against a never ending tunnel of sound.. realy good work!

bud said 511 days ago
Thanks EB
for your very thoughtful comments. Actually I never turn on the television in Hotels - in fact I often hide the controller or put a towel over the screen. If I do turn it on I have a real hard time turning it off and getting to sleep. Glad you could appreciate the contrasts.

Okay
Now I did listen last night when I was suppose to heading for bed. But it was getting late and I had yo get up early. That doesn't count, huh?

2 things that struck me 1. the sub sonic distortion bed. Has that subterrain thing.
2. Your voice is waaay different, at first I couldn't believe it was actually you.

Anyway has a forlorn feel. Probably from being on the road again, eh?

bud said 511 days ago
I always try and post just when
you're heading for bed on the west coast. It's like my old drug days when I'd have to call California to find anyone awake. When it go t really bad I'd end up calling Europe.
I tried to get an organic sound out of the chaos.
I tried to sound like a scandinavian person singing in english - and also to create a very tempered intimacy. Thanks for noticing the difference.

landscape:language sound image soul. Your best poem, from my recollection. Perfect commentary in third verse. Some cool "sitting in a hotel room in Austin" melancholy. Great use of hotel time.

grew out of that moment at the beach we talked about. Glad you liked it.

hey! that's my FruitSaver!
cool song Bud

although you're calling it "more of a sketch" - that's exactly part of what makes it work so well.

i feel it captures that effect of a memory being a really "noisy" phenomenon (in the sense of signal-to-noise ratio).

thanks

~ ~ ~

a FruitSaver is this gizmo to store your fresh fruit in an ideal environment (temperature and humidity). i guess the idea is that your fruit will last a few days longer if stored in it... we got one as a gift.

here's a pic: http://www.pbase.com/hjew/image/31751048

it lasted a few months before the fan bearing inside it failed. i suspect the amount of energy it used out cost whatever extended fruit life it may have provided... it was mostly a gifty gimmick in my opinion.

bud said 510 days ago
The fruitsaver saved the day
what a crazy coincidence. I like the signal to noise ratio idea as applied to memory. Very cool. Thanks.

---

SmokeyVW said 510 days ago
.
i had to laugh about this coincidence!

i made that recording while i was capturing kitchen sounds eventually becoming "In The Mess" - i had no particular use for it, and figured "who knows, maybe someone might find it useful someday..." so i put it up at freesound. LOL

VicDiesel said 510 days ago
Wonderful soundscape
Somewhat strange to hear these sounds and then suddenly getting a relatively conventional vocal over it. But once the shock wears off I like it.

These sorts of vocals were fashionable 20 years ago or so, but then with lots of feedbacking guitars under it. I think I prefer these abstract sounds.

Btw, check out my last track for more sort of abstract sound.

Victor.

bud said 510 days ago
Thanks for checking in and commenting
I'm interested in who you're referring to 20 years ago - I was thinking of Notwist - a band worth hearing if you haven't. I'll definitely drop by to hear what's up at your place.

Odd,
but somehow soothing Bud. In the circumstances you describe, I think this worked amazingly wqell - I'd always steer away from such a
flat" backing drone track, but you've shown it can work really successfully.
I really like the descriptive "point in time" nature of the words.
Neil

bud said 510 days ago
The point in time is about the only way
I'm really comfortable writing - I come from a visual background and I get kind of lost when I try to put ideas into words. This whole piece happened kinda quick and offhand - I started it on the plane and finished it te next afternoon as something to do before dinner. I like how constraints force new ideas forward - like in the LIOLI challenges. Thanks for your comments.

Cool textures...
Lo-fi eh? Even so, it works. I really like your singing in this one man. Relaxed. Pensive. Just the right delivery for this theme. The soundscape is blurry and slightly jumbled...just like our most of our memories tend to be. A nice artsy experiment, this!

Be well!

makes perfect sense to me. it's really hypnotic. was this from the infamous session you did with syd barrett, nels cline and thurston moore?

Great writing
Beautiful! Beautiful! writing, but ironically, it's very haunting. Maybe you were visiting my family...lol...Well... I guess it's not that dark - lol...

Interesting piece. Quite intriguing, to say the least.

How much time did you spend in your room??? lol...

Nice job!

Thanks for sharing, Bud. Dion

P.S. Is this a site that allows the public to upload loops - curious me

bud said 509 days ago
Thanks Macca
I didn't spend as much time in my room as it might seem - this came together very quickly. Now when I was a teenager it was quite a different story.

Freesound is an open peer to peer file sharing site for musicians, field recorders, naturalists, you name it. Check it out by using one of the links above - and thank Smokey for finding it back when we were doing LIOLI#4 together. That's where he found the train sample.

Sinister
This is great - exactly the sorta stuff I'd like to do - hypnotic and sinister, dark poetry. I let hooklines get in the way of atmosphere - sometimes atmspere is enought.

Great track.

Menacing Flower Power
I totally picked up on the early-english-pop-influenced melody. Great lyrics. Sort of a cross between 70s flower-rock and goth. Love the borderline freeform tempo feel - it creates a sense of wandering that underscores the unsettling background.

Mix-wise I'd like to hear the vocals more integrated into the sound bed, even if it means they get a bit lost from time to time. Some feedback delays or reverse reverb effects would also be cool - to make the lyrics wash in and out of the noise.

bud said 505 days ago
Good comments
I agree with you on all of them. It's that extra day of tweaking that I often pass up - and being away from my G5 was limiting. I'll try to get back to this. Thanks for dropping by.

Your voice--
I don't think I've ever heard it before.

Nice glitchy-trancey electro background going on here. It feels like three-day old stubble, in a way.

For a while I thought that my music had gotten away from the "concrete" sounds of "real" music, but I'm just playing in the backyard compared to your experiments. Cool adventures, bud.
