When I was in music school, I had a good friend who was (and still is) a fabulous violinist. He was also a purist when it came to classical music. If it said “mezzo forte”, then you did NOT play “forte”. Tempo, dotted eighth notes...everything.

Segovia’s transcription of Bach’s “Chaccone”?:

“What’s with all these bass lines? Show me where they’re written”!

“Whatever”, I’d say, lolling about like the slovenly guitarist that I was (and still am).

Don’t get me wrong...I respect that philosophy. Just don’t always abide by it.

Skip forward some decades to the present day:

I’ve been a big fan of Paul F. Page’s since my first listen here at Macjams. He’s an excellent composer/arranger and plays beautifully, too. I encourage anybody and everybody to check out his music:

And so, I was extremely flattered and intrigued when he asked to put his hand to “Time’s Passing”:

His interpretation of the piece is, for me, a perfect example of how to do it: play the music the way it speaks to you. When Michele and I wrote and recorded the piece, it was so immediate and gut wrenching for both of us. Paul’s slant is from a different perspective. He can strongly relate...but it’s along the lines of a beautiful, sad, yet sweet memory. We’re no longer there.

Komrad K asked about tunes that make you cry. I broke down on this one. Paul’s interpretation made me realize that time is, indeed, passing. And this tune, still so present in my heart and mind, is now from long ago. Except for the truly horrific moments, the difficult times of our lives are still of value and they, too, can be missed...as time passes.

I couldn't resist the sweet sad melody of Bob's "Time's Passing." When a song is so heartfelt, it's impossible to ignore. Bob's nailed a story that plays out in all our hearts. I'm grateful for the opportunity to lend my own perspective to this wonderful little gem.

	Movie soundtrack, maybe? Astory of time passingf, definitely. This is so poignantly beautiful... It evokes memories of childhood, then pain of first romances that faded in the sunset. Paul's talent is amazing, and joined with your talent, it soars off the charts!

definitely a RE-interpretation
I love the aspect of different interpretations and "coloring" of a piece by different artists... it showcases their talents. In this piece, if you listen to both, you hear that your original composition is a rock solid foundation. You also hear Paul's ability here to re-voice the cello as a violin, and shift the mood from melancholy to wistful. The live cello gave me an almost visceral response... the deep resonance tensed up my muscles. However, Paul's interpretation with the violin lines the dark clouds with a touch of sweetness... which reflects his outlook on life, I believe. I must admit to liking both of these for different reasons. Paul did an outstanding job re-scoring this and making GPO sound quite good.

So, did you have sheet music for Paul, or MIDI files to go from, or did he have to transcribe/capture the music just by listening to it?

HA!!! I told Paul: "Nose to the grindstone, mister". As in: "No"...I just sent him the mp3 and the rest was all Paul (and that even rhymes).

You and I very much on the same track here, drak. The original recording was very physical and a serious cry for help....which came quickly in the middle and then went. Paul's is from a different perspective. A perspective which I share and can now relate to, after years of distance from the situation.

I can only say great things about Paul F. Page. Incredible talent and musicianship.

I'm speechless and don't know who many times i listened to this !
A real clear version of this, Mr. Paul is more than great composer at MJ and he did this piece beautifully and Mr. Bob you know what this piece means to me !!
There's a little tear in my eyes while listening to this, great music composition and great job.
So nice to hear Mr. Paul playing, Thanks for sharing this GEM here with us Mr. Bob and Mr. Paul

Just thought I'd get that outta way...

When reflections of something is expressed with that which is of timeless beauty, then, it somehow is able to transcend that which wasn't so, to a place that is, quite beautiful.

I don't know, (nor do I need to know) what was the life experience(s) that compelled you to write the "Passing of time", Bob, but it seems as though you had already began harvesting, that which was good from it...

This was a wonderful piece as it was. And now, it's been detailed and rendered in a way that clearly has enriched your initial efforts - And isn't that what the "passing of time" tends to do to an experience, if we're open to it... - We are able to look back, and see things in more detail to understand more, if we're willing to... It typically makes things better.

This is so rich with life! As I listened, I appreciated, just being alive.

Thanks to Paul, Michele and not at all the least, you, Bob, for sharing this wonderful piece.

All right, Bob, weren't you just making some remark to me about how nice it must be to have a friend to do a beautiful verson of one of your tunes? Careful what you wish for...

This combines two of my favorite musicians on MacJams, and two of my favorite MacJammers-as-people as well...two people who have always seemed to have not only their talents but their hearts and heads all in order... So in my imagination at least this ends up representing all that I like about you two guys...

I continue to love this composition, and I think this version brings out a particular sweetness that the tune can well carry...

	I have not heard the original yet but this is a lovely work. It really grabs hold of your feelings and WILL NOT LET GO. The melody captures such a mix of events and times, with the varied feelings about them - some happy, some sad, but all forever passed by.
