Description Gumption Goodwilly (aka Vic Holman ) tells me he originally wrote this song three years ago. He asked that I post this on my page to share in the Goodwilly's "fame & fortune" Hey, does this mean I can trade up these opossum drum skins for something better?

Who's doing what & where:

Gumption Goodwilly (Vic Holman)- Vocals & guitars

Uncle Flaccid Goodwilly (Micheal Wark)- Vocals, bass & organ

Grandpa Curmudgeon Goodwilly (Jack Miller)- Vocals, saxophone & harmonica

Mojo Goodwilly (Mike Dancy)- DoD drums & piano. And for the first time in my life, singing! (albeit a small part- the "ahh" parts with Vic)

I have to mention that when Vic started this, he told me he wanted me to be more involved than just the percussion by playing piano and singing. "You mean Mojo's gotta step out of his comfortable little box?" Thanks Vic for helping me along!!

Also, A big thanks to Myshkin (Ross) for the Goodwilly's logo!

Lyrics Hard Times

1.
She ran into trouble
a little while back
the man she loved
stabbed her in the back
she went down to the river
to drown her pain
never again

2.
history repeats
once again
got hooked up
with a dirty old man
she went down to the river
to drown her pain
never again

3.
she got in a fix
with the law
turning tricks
till she was raw
she never will change
the pain comes again
always again

4.
her body was found
in a back street alley
she was laid to rest
nobody came, sadly
her soul went to the river
to drown her pain
never again

Bridge

She went down to the river
She went down for good
She went down to drown the pain
never again

5.
now she stands
in judgment of god
he told her
you got it all wrong
her soul went to the river
to drown her pain
never again

6.
history repeats
over again
she didn't learn
life's little lesson
she went to the river
to drown her pain
never again

ooo the aahs
Mike you really stepped up to the task. some singing and piano. and of course your outstanding drum mixing. Micheal and Jack of course put so much into this as well. It took threes to get around to creating this song, and I'm glad to have my buds to bring it to life.

I would give 10's just for your aahs. But we can't vote on our own tune. We might cheat at cards. But we got's our dignity.

mikey_d said 419 days ago
Thanks Vic!
All of this was an excellent learning experience for me. I can't count how many times I resang those "Ahh's" until I got something I could live with!

The piano was a whole different beast for me. For my skill level, this was a bit complex. You should see all of the unused parts I played, haha!

You, Jack and Micheal did a fantastic job as usual!

Cracking
The Goodwillys with Mikey D - how could I refuse. Guys - you've outdone yourselves here. Now, this sounds like a Holman chord sequence (Vic, your style is like, so recognisable to me now!). The chorus on this is just excellent - memorable even the first time around. Mix is great, but i's Mike's AAhhhhs that , of course, make this a winner.

Vic - this is one of my fav vocals from you, really rich and warm. Love the sax soslo - there is so much going on here, but it all fits together so well.

Mr. Wark gave me the heads-up on this - thank you, i wouldn't have wanted to miss this.

Hard times have never sounded sooo good.

Don't you guys have day jobs. If you do, give 'em up.

Steve

mikey_d said 419 days ago
Hey Steve!
Thanks for the kind words! With only 2-1/2 years of piano lessons so far under my belt, I sometimes feel like I'm in over my head. These guys have been instrumental (hah, a bad pun!) in helping me learn. I'm really glad they've kept me along for the ride. Singing (even though it's a small part) was an experience. Thanks again for listening and commenting!

btw, I can't leave my day job- I have too much fun there too :-P

Vic Holman said 419 days ago
Thanks Steve
it is Mikey's aaah. that can make you weep.

We have to keep our day jobs. Otherwise we would be living in a van..... down by the river

But I work NIGHTS Steve! And it's there, during my breaks, that I usually write the lyrics for my own tunes. I can't quit. If I do I'll be stuck submitting instrumentals for ever after!

At long last...
...we managed to help Mikey overcome his shyness problem (as well as a related bladder issue). Nice goin' Lil Mojo!

Vic originally wanted ME to sing this but I knew I'd only screw it up. I'm glad you stepped up to the mic Vic. YOU OWN THIS VOCAL BRO! Your best yet to my ears...

Nice background vox by Jack (he sounds unnervingly young doesn't he folks?) along with smokin sax and harmonica.

This was a blast to play on gentlemen. Thanks for keeping me around...

Be well all!

We finally got to use the cool logo which Ross (Myshkin) designed for us. Icing on the cake! Thanks man...

this is the best yet. A bit of Tom Petty in there somewhere. Grest vocals Vic, love the BVs too. Tight playing and excellent production. What more could you ask for? An instant hit!

mikey_d said 419 days ago
Thanks Peter!
I agree- When Vic sent the initial song draft to me, Tom Petty crossed my mind too.

We're glad you enjoyed listening! Vic is also responsible for the mixing/mastering on this. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Great Scott!
This song gives me the Willies! The Dangling Goodwillies! You lads are just terriffic. It still blows me away when I think about Vic's story of how he was just writing songs to listen to in the car. I can't imagine this place without him! My iPod would only be half full!

Uncle F, you are on a winning streak here. Thanks for keeping me up to date while I've been away from home.

Grandpa - your sax is straight out of mouth of Andy Mackay of Roxy Music. I love how you played it against the harmonica in a tiny little beautiful battle. Sweet sound!

And Mojo, all I can say is OOOOHHH and AAAHHHH! Great job on those vocals. Rumor has it you're singing the next song?

Did I mention the guitar yet?

You guys have a serious problem. Everyone wants a case of the Willies!

Excellent
Guys, this one sounds closer to your inspiration The Traveling Wilbury's than any other I have heard. Just kind of a neat down home earthiness to this one. From the background organ, Jack's sax to Vic's vocal, it just exudes charisma and coolness. Needless to say another great effort by all.

Calchas said 419 days ago
Thanks Tom
I agree. I think it's due primarily to Vic's guitar and singing (which is probably his best ever here). On this one the rest of us are basically Vic's back-up band. The other reason is that---well---the Wilburys had a lot of fun and it came through their music...Needless to say we all had a ball doing this and I think some of that comes through here!

Glad you enjoyed this Tom! (Or should I drop a hint and say "Satchmo Limpdog"?)

Calchas said 416 days ago
Hi Ross!
Thanks again for the way-cool logo!

Your comparison to the old trad "Louise" IS very apt as to content. The best version I've ever heard of it was done many years ago (1970 I think) by PLAINSONG on their "In Search Of Amelia Earhart" album. It is sung by the much underrated IAIN MATTHEWS, who was a founding member of the group. If you can locate a copy I think you'll enjoy their version. The rest of the album is aces as well...

I posted my avatar without comment
for awhile, because it is customary to stand mute and face the "music" ,as it were, in trials of public humiliation. You took my own words and crucified me with them - and you resurrected your dignity very well. I've said my open apologies to "all" of you more than once, and I know that forgiveness will not be forthcoming. I accept your indictment and your plaint. I have learned life's little lesson by heart, while there is still time to redeem myself with others. Thank you both.
P.S. and "axgrinder" f.u.

Calchas said 416 days ago
Yikes!
You have misread this song Carole. It was written three years ago and we have been working on it for almost two months. You were not even in the picture (our picture anyway) then girl.

It is, as I understand, a tune about self-destructive behavior in general and the pain it causes. No one in particular is in view. It is a warning against such behavior and an expression of frustration that sometimes folks we know and/or love engage in this type of thing.

I lived this nightmare back when I was in the drug-culture. I know the message of this song is good and true and I stand behind it.

I think you need to reconsider your response. I also think you need to apologize to Alvin (Ax Grinder).

Be well friend!

Carole June said 416 days ago
3yrs or 2mos was not the point I was
trying to make, but MacJammers are very nomadic, traveling from new song post to new song post, and I can't type that fast. So, I'd better stay on topic this time. On topic is my point. On Vic's song "Without The Sun", not only did I not stick to the topic, but I made some very un-toward comments at Vic and Mikes expense (they may be good sports, but there is a limit to a person's generosity) My change of subject (bad behavior/ "self destructive" even) caused more than a few following comments to partially derail - morphing into the subject at hand [Mr. Holman's great music and song lyrics] accompanied with thinly veiled (more to transparent in one case - the word "seat(,)" is not spelled with an "ee")double entendres. I have only myself to blame for getting crucified for this - I brought it on myself and deserved what I got. But Vic Holman did not. He is a serious musician, and deserved much more dignity than I gave him. Again, my fault for starting the out of control train in the first place. I managed to turn serious musician's comments into a long running joke. And no one seemed to notice that the four serious women muscians, who regularly make very insightful comments on his execellent work, did not comment on his song, and it may have been because the discussion had degenerated into something less than professional. And to them, if that is the case, it is to them that I owe the rest of this apology. I don't know much about music except whether I like it or not, so in the future, I'll stay on topic by saying something nice about the words all of you write so beautifully. And to Alvin, who was not even part of that train derailment, I sincerely apologize for swearing at you. I was a tad oversensitive after all those remarks, which I had no right to be since I precipitated all of them! Again, Alvin, I'm sincerely sorry, and if you feel the need to, feel free to rake me over the coals for my un-toward behavior at your expense.

Calchas said 416 days ago
Carole...
By "misread" I mean that it appears you might believe the song is about your life...or some parts thereof. If so, I wish to assure you that this notion is absurd. Last summer I recorded a tune which is similar in spirit and content called "Run Sally Run." But it wasn't intended as a "chronicle" of any one person's life or mistakes any more than this tune was. This being so I must insist that any "public humiliation" or "crucifixion" is purely imagined. You can relax. None of us would ever write a tune with the intention of hurting anyone. We are (or try our damndest to be) Goodwillys and not Badwillys!!!

Be well friend...

"We are put upon this earth a little space that we might learn to bear the beams of love." (William Blake)

Carole June said 416 days ago
No, didn't think that at all
was just referring to all the ridiculous comments precipitated from my original untoward comment on Vic's last song.
Don't think Vic's Goodwilly's song has anything to do with me personally. It has everything to do with the way men treat women. I don't work in the field, but have several friends who do - police, socialworker, probation officer, court personel - who deal with attitudes like Alvin's every day. I didn't think Alvin's comment was aimed at me - I just found Alvin's comment extremely demeaning to women in general (fictional or real life) and it is attitudes like his that just well - it was quicker to type two letters than this entire paragraph. We are supposed to help other human beings along our journey, not hurt them or look the other way and do nothing. (Good Samaritan story)

LOL!!!!
Group Hug accepted from you three gentle - men. :-)

Alvin: Nice avatar! :-) - way less scary than the other one. Coeur d' Alene/ Coeur is [French] for "Heart" What does Coeur d' Alene translate to? Do you know Sherman Alexie's books? (Movie: "Smoke Signals") Been checkin' out your work. Very cool! :-) Thanks for the note - will send one back. :-)
P.S. The sights on the 30.06 are skewed high and to the right on purpose. :-)

Another great song Goodwillys!!!
Life is Good-willys! :-)(the courage in "Last Sail" inspires me every day.) "Southern Cross" - Crosby, Stills, & Nash (Hey, it's a "sailboat" song! I like the lyrics)
Calm Seas & Safe Harbor, Dudes!
P.S. (M) tweaked my Bio. again, finally.

Beautiful instrumental section...
...songwriting's great. Surprised the vox aren't a given. I thought they sounded really fine.

Thanks Bob!
Its great when everyone involved can be on the same page but throw there own thing in. The song has been sitting around for a while. I'm glad everyone pitched to help me finally get it done

Aaaaaah!
Am I allowed to enjoy a song this dark this thoroughly? I'm tappin my toes and groovin' my butt and loving the guitar and the vocals and the drums and everything else, and our subject here is losing her soul!

Ah well, here's to the Dangling Goodwillys! Long may you...er...dangle?

Great job, guys!

~Brian Weiland

Calchas said 416 days ago
I'll settle for dangling LONG thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the tuneage Brian. Given the content of this song the upbeatness of the melody is truly paradoxical. Whether intended at the start or not I think this underscores the dark thread of existential absurdity that runs through our lives at times. Not that our pain and grief aren't real, but perhaps...just perhaps...in the BIG picture...('Nuff said!)

I dunno!!!!
Ha! Ha! Has your wife figured out "Tempus" yet?, and smacked you silly ?!!!!!!!!!!! :-) I love this song also! But unlike you, I'll find her unmarked grave, and strew her place with flowers, and set with her a spell, and say prayers for her soul!!!!! The soul MEN ruined!!!!!!!! NO sweet little girl sets out on her journey to become a Vic Holman tune! I'm sorry for you Mrs. Brian!

Magnimonious!
Great pacing in this tune. I love that it is in 6. It works perfectly. Great dynamics and chord changes. And that hoody little guitar lick in between the vocal lines in the verse makes the song to me. The vocals in the guitar solo leading into one of the most monumental builds in musical history is just stellar! Sounds like the girl in the song is having one of them "bad days". Nice job guys!

Vic Holman said 413 days ago
Thanks Ray
the big build was Mikey and I doing 4 vocals, them i did five harmony guitar lines with on slide guitar. I was pretty amazed myself who it came out.

I really enjoyed your new song. Thanks Ray

The sax...
is still out of tune (sharp?) --- sad to say.

mikey_d said 414 days ago
Hmm...
I can't comment about the sax (that's out of my area of expertise), but I do thank you for listening and taking the time to leave feedback.

what ?
80 comments : ) thats insane ! Love the song kinda had a Bobby Dilin/tom petty feel to me . Nice indeed .

:)
And yours made it 81! (for a song on my page that is incredible, haha!) Vic was very generous with asking me to post the song here. Thanks for listening and commenting!

Hmmm... I'm flumoxed
I listened to this days ago and thought I had left a lengthy comment.. only to see nothing here... darn...

I remember talking about how recognizable Vics signature guitar playing is... and how I liked the unaffected vocal and conversational delivery... very comfortable...

I also talked about how I wanted to comment without reading the other comments... so that even if I repeated it would be honest... i thought the contrast between the dark subject & light upbeat groove was at first puzzling... but as it went on it seemed to heighten the sense of resignation... a shrug ... OH WELL... you know

but now all those comments are lost...

I do remember that I called next... or I'll take my ball and go home...

peace.... excellent job

Vic Holman said 413 days ago
Thanks Scott
we're going to keep your ball so you can't go home.

One of use might of have taken you earlier comment and framed it. That's my guess. Thanks again Scott!

Actually I had it bronzed...It looks spectacular! However, it is sadly no longer legible....
