Keywords Barrios Mangore (1)
Description This is a tribute to truly one of the best guitarist that ever lived. The stretches on this piece is really something to say the least. It literally forces you to put the guitar in the classical position (on your left knee. Putting it on the right knee would be almost impossible to record clean.
Barrios was famed for his phenomenal performances, both live and on gramophone recordings — the first classical guitar music ever committed to disk. For some years, it was his habit to perform in concert in traditional Paraguayan dress (he was partly of Guarani origin), assuming the persona of Nitsuga Mangoré (Nitsuga being Augustin spelled backwards).

Lovely piece...
Lovely guitar playing....did you take classical guitar? you don't mention your musical background much and would be interesting to know where and how you learned to play the way you do....

thetiler said 522 days ago
I loved
to go to parks and play over pieces like Joaquin Rodrigo's
Concierto de Aranjuéz
By that I mean, take a CD player with speakers and play at parks. My kids when growing up liked to go to parks and that was an opportunity to play guitar as well.

Here is a beautiful Gorge Sakallariou piece. I took lessons from him at his house when I wanted to learn more about the Concierto de Aranuez.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f70EKu07aV0

He was a San Francisco Conservatory teacher and was a student of Andre Segovia.

Impressed
I'm impressed. I think everything else of yours that I've heard has been your own creation or your arrangement of something else; have you done other "straight' classical pieces on MacJams?

Anyway, really nice job, showing you once again to be a really fine guitarist of extraordinary range.

Wonderful
Artistry on such a lovely song. I really admire anyone who can play like this. Lovely recording of those mellow tones, M

thetiler said 522 days ago
Thanks Movis
I hope in some way I can be inspirational for few artists here to go and learn more about Barrios. In all my years of playing, he really struck me has having a form of music that was quite graceful and unique. A special man indeed I think.

He also wrote poems and was involved in other areas of learning which really impressed me!

MY GUITAR
by Agustin Barrios Mangoré

There is a deep mystery in your sonorous
Garden heart, guitar of mine,
You enjoy suffering, and in your joy
Ecstasies of passion, teardrops of crying.

The sweet Moor gave you your heart,
The Iberian gave you your untamed soul
And Virgin America, you might say,
Put in you, because of its love, all the treasure.

And so on your supreme strings
That vibrate with an almost human accent
There is, at times, your voice, like a lament.

As a sigh from your lonely heart
In whose sad and mystical plan
Sentiment forever flourishes.

What an honor.
What an honor to be the student of the student of Andre Segovia. Indeed, what an honor for us to hear your playing Bill, and to be called your friends. Thank you.

God bless,

Rick

Fantastico!
Bill, what a fantastic performance you accomplished here! Wow man, you sure are an excellent guitarist. Also, many thanks for expressing this piece of musical knowledge to us regarding the works of Choro da Saudade. I'll have to look for more of his music.

P.S., I also see you have moved to Nashville--I am very jealous because the music and music scene there is so diverse and excellent.

thetiler said 520 days ago
Thanks Drew
Ya, I have been playing at the Blue Bird Cafe. I miss your bass playing. Especially on the tune we did.

Thanks again for participating on it and stopping by!

guitapick said 520 days ago
You really are...
...some kind of player, there, Bill.

I had a feeling that there was some classical/Spanish background in your playing. This definitely confirms...

Wonderful piece played beautifully. I'd love to hear you playing over Concierto de Aranjuez.

What a terrific piece! Such beauty and grace in this one. Thanks for turning me on to Senor Saudade and for playing his music so flawlessly!

What a joy to listen to. My head has been full of chaos recently, and this helped smooth it out. Great playing, Bill!

Marvelous. One of your best. With a wittiness and freedom that is extremely charming. Did you throw in those slightly jazzy sections or is everything like he wrote it?

thetiler said 519 days ago
I have listened
to John Williams version, Angel Romero, David Russell, but it has a bit more of a Chet Atkins structuring. Many people don't know this I but Chet Atkins was one of the first guitarists to record Barrios music.

Captivating
Bravo, bravo. Oh my, what impressive chops you have. This was a delight to find. I loved the way you captured not just the notes, but the environment in which it was played. Very classically recorded.

Great.

Bill, I don't always get to your songs - mainly because there are just so many of them ;) - but I'm glad I dropped in for this one. Beautiful tone from Liz - and your usual classy playing. It must be so rewarding to be able to play so beautifully.
Neil

thetiler said 518 days ago
Thanks Jig
It's rewarding if people want to listen to it more than once, in other words if people download it and really want to listen to it. If it can continue doing that (in an enjoyment mode) then I don't think I could put a price on that very accurately. Maybe even a value past money! But of course, in this life. It is very hard to not be influenced by the almighty dollar.

But I really appreciate the kind comments, questions, suggestions etc.

I was just reading about this guy!
In Guitar: An American Life, which I recommend reading...

Your touch on this is both light and precise. Once again, as with some of the other MacJammers on the site who have real playing chops, I am struck by how nice this sounds without at any moment sounding like a technical exercise...

Be sure to find the forum thread I started, and 'sign up' as a Taylor player if you haven't already...

You have my respect and admiration, Bill. Again.

piece and playing . Thank you for sharing this .

intricate piece, excellent playing!
This piece is indeed quite intricate and involved, but the virtuosic way you play it makes it sound easy.

The rapid shifting of voices from register to register makes the music sound as full as a symphony orchestra. The variety of sound-quality adds a lot of interest.

Is it my imagination, or did you do a different take on the last third of this recording? After that new section in major key, the reverb and ambience sounded changed.

In any case, this is a wonderful piece of music, performed with your usual consummate guitar skill!

thetiler said 517 days ago
This piece was recorded in
sections cause I didn't have it memorized. I love this piece so much though I have most of it memorized now. When I have to turn a page i lose my timing for sure. I"ll have to get one of those speedy automatic page turners:)

Thanks for stopping by.

wonderful recording!
Your technique is fantastic, but you have a lot of that warmth that a piece like this needs to sound musical. Just what I love about the classical guitar. So... you took lessons from a person who took lessons from Segovia? Wow, that means I know a guy who took lessons from a guy who took lessons from Segovia!
It is nice to hear a piece of the classical guitar repertoire from you, Bill. It is a nice counterpoint to the pieces you compose and arrange for the guitar.

It wasn't a whole lot of lessons, but he helped me out with some very difficult music. Andre Segovia Is a hero of mine. Now if only Andre and Chet can get along that would so nice.
