Description The Infinites and Five Extra Arms met face to face for the first time in late April of 2007. It was thrilling to meet an entity that you only know through emailing GB files back and forth.

Jim told his version of that day in his 5 Ninth Meltdown, Now I'm telling the rest of the story, the true version, exaggerated.

Oh, and I must confess, when the chorus kicks in, I was playing this cool riff on the synth and I realized (way too late to change it) that it was about a 7 second ripoff of an Ultravox riff. Any Ultravox fans out there? Please realize this 7 second nod is out of pure respect.

Vic Holman taught me everything I know on guitar.
Lyrics AND SO THE DAY HAD COME
WHEN THE BOYS WOULD MEET
AND I HEARD JIM SAY
HE WAS “PACKIN’ HEAT”
SO I LOST MY COOL
AND I PUT ON MY FEET
AT THE CORNER OF NINTH AND
LITTLE WEST 12TH STREET

AND WHEN THE MAN ARRIVED
HE WAS WEARING A KILT
HIS LOVELY WIFE IN HAND
DOING JUST WHAT HE WILT
I SAW HIS SMILE FOR MILES
SHAKING MY EXTRA ARMS
HE DIDN’T WASTE NO TIME
TURNING ON HIS EXTRA CHARMS

FIVE NINTH

THE MURPHY’S WERE THERE
THE MURPHYS WERE THERE
THE MURPHY’S WERE THERE
THE MURPHYS WERE THERE
THE MURPHY’S WERE THERE
THE MURPHYS WERE THERE
THE MURPHY’S WERE THERE
THE MURPHYS WERE THERE
THE MURPHY’S WERE THERE
THE MURPHYS WERE THERE
THE MURPHY’S WERE THERE
THE MURPHYS WERE THERE

WE PUSHED OUR WAY INTO THE CROWD
THE PLACE IT SOON BECAME TOO LOUD
WE LAUGHED, “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S TRUE”
THEN WE DID WHAT ROCK STARS DO
WE PLAYED A SET THAT ROCKED THE SCENE
AND ALL THE PARTS - IN BETWEEN
THE TENDER BAR WAS SO AMUSED
OR WAS HE DRUNK OR JUST CONFUSED?

FIVE NINTH

POUR ME IN A YELLOW CAB
POOR ME, IN A YELLOW CAB
POUR ME IN A YELLOW CAB

Spot on!
Let's start in reverse - the beautifully crafted shambolic ending is EXACTLY how it was! It capures the state of play as all those arms were last seen clambering aboard a yellow cab heading uptown (supposed to be the airport, so I guess towards a tunnel?)

Rock in the alternative its is. And so were we. And SO ARE WE!!!!

Love the "tender bar" line...! He was indeed confused by our set.

Great stuff, big guy - instant fave & DL.

Later!

(PS - what about those Skank Bros? Rockin' or what?)

lavalamp said 558 days ago
Blue guitar pick
Love the line about the blue guitar chip on the floor(think everyone could relate to that).
Love your freaky lyrics, man. Love your style.
What is Dr. Rhythym Drum Beat and why don't you use loops from GB or the extention packs(if you need better ones)?
Liked it a lot, but you're not the next American Idol!JK

Bob Dorsey Wins American Idol Again!
I think I could stand a chance.... Just because I can't sing and I can't play guitar and I really don't know doody about mixing. I just love it! How else would I spend my Tuesday nights? Painting? (I probably should).

Oh well, at least I'll never receive any death threats from those at the top, but then there's always Mister Mustard Seed.

Oh yeah, DR Rhythym - I was a master at programming songs for all my songs on my tiny machine. I recorded about 30 cassettes of horrible songs and the other night I was looking through to find a lyric I had written a lifetime ago and that's when I found the unusable tracks that I used here and in YOU DON'T WANT ME... Unfortunately, I spent too much time trying to degarble the drum track and remove a guitar track from it. Next time I'll use a large magnet.

Everything else was perfect for me so I played a new bassline and dropped another guitar track on top, some amazing vocals as you mentioned earlier and my signature synthesizer tracks to make it even more mud-like.

I can't wait to figure out a way to use the drum loops in a faster and more effective way. It sounds amazing when I find what I want, but who has the time to search for a drum track? Maybe I'll find another Dr Rhythym on ebay and plug it directly into the computer for a cleaner sound? Yeah right.

Thsnks for listening guys. It means the world to me that you voted for me.

Yours Truly, Miss Kentucky

lavalamp said 557 days ago
Hey, just a tip
When using the loops from GB, I first decide on the right tempo for the song with a drum machine on my piano keyboard. Then I limit myself to the ones available on GB(this reduces the options). So, let's say I choose tempo 120, that leaves me with 20-40 options, not 250, and that makes life easier and recording faster. Sometimes, I think of it as if I'm playing with a really good drummer with limitations. Then I add some fills later.
Does this make any sense to you?
Just a tip.
LL

Thanks David ExtraArmbuster. I will use that smart advice.

I'm back in time
It's 1979, a seedy pub on Brighton seafront (long since gone). What is that noise on stage? Blimey, it's me. This is jolly good fun isn't it?

Thanks for the time travel. I need to do that now and again :-)

epic, chaotic and dramatic tale of an evening out. At the end, you make it sound like a fifty persons far-west bar brawl with aliens.

estellie said 558 days ago
My favorite part...
...is the ending. Is that a dog barking I hear? I also like C.J's comment. I completely agree. That's exactly what I was thinking this was about until I read the description, LOL.

estellie said 558 days ago
umm...P.S.
You do realize I mean the way you end the piece and not the fact of its ending, right? Everytime I say I like an ending to something, people giggle and think I'm insulting someone, but I'm not. I was not happy to see the song had ended. I just meant I like the crazy ending/meltdown/chaos last section....oy. I hope I'm not in trouble.

Agree with dick on this, this has a real pub rock feel to, really rockin' and kinda punk rock. This sounds like a song about being drunk written when you were drunk .... I love how this falls apart at the end. poor you, Bob! You guys'll have to meet up more often, as you seem to be inspiring a lot of songs between you1

five_extra_arms said 558 days ago
Pub Rockers
"a song about being drunk written when you were drunk ...." What a description. The meeting was quite inspiring. I get tons of inspiration from everyone here. Jim just happened to be the lucky soul that met me first, so don't get too comfy with your windows open, I might show up one day to "inspire" you too.

What officer? I didn't see a sign? Private Property? No, I haven't been drinking.... Hey! That's my head!! Ouch!

Rokkin'
Love the energy of this song... that reckless guitar and the singing=very cool. I wish I could hear the drums better; a loud, cracking pulse of a beat would really nail down the song and double the rockingness. I really like when I see lyric lines like "Doing just what he wilt". Cool song!

five_extra_arms said 558 days ago
Reckless Guitar vs Drums
I promise that I will not use any more ridiculous drum tracks that are buried beneath a few layers of other instruments that have been piled up on old cassettes. I like my Tascam as the mixing board for all my instruments going into the computer. I should just try to use drum loops and get over it. The learning curve can't be that hard, can it?

I like the drum machine in Reason. It makes so much sense to me. Any other machines/software solutions like that where you can see the entire measure and place your hits on the 5 and 12, etc...?

Thanks for your comments, PV - If you weren't so busy, you'd be my drum bitch.

Oh great, you do me too much honor, quasoctopoid, hahaha! No, using drum loops is all way easy and stuff. Reason has a pretty good interface for making your own beats, so does GB if you don't mind using the pencil tool. Other than that, I dunno... I use loops!

I think I'll try the pencil in GB. Maybe pick a kit and tap it out on the Oxygen 8 and go back and correct it? Otherwise I could drag the drumset into the room.....

first i thought this was a neverending intro, like a bomb to explode ... awaiting drums and guitars to break loose ... but they didn't. No matter, this is very well done, weird piece of Rock.

Songwriting
i subscribe to this point of view and i hate the visual pollution with careless taken digital pics, too. otherwise i have to say, that digital cameras are great for spontaniously experimenting with the media (photography) and they help talented people (without a professional education) easily to express themselves or to delevlop visual ideas. I think, same is true of making music ...

Night Out
I've always loved the punk sound of the late 70's. This song was true to a better time for me. A time where my heart was in tact.

How was I to know that 6 or 7 years later it would be 1992 and I'd be nursing this broken heart for the next 11 years!!!!

It was bad enough that you wrote songs that revealed the raw angst from which I suffer, now you're in on it with Braveheart.

To top it off with a big old "How do you do?". Deanna Sue got my Dr. Rhythym in the divorce.

Now I could lay some serious lead to this! So...is that 5 extra arms on both sides or 4 on 1 and 1 on 1? Or perhaps 3 on 1 and 2 on 1 AAAAHHHHH! I'm so confused! Anyway, I like your stuff at any rate! Have you heard someone who actually really can't play the guitar? I think you can play man. Sounds like you do a fair job at mixing and your singing isn't to shabby either. I think I'm gonna like this place.

Chips VS Picks
Oh man, I ate the blue pick off the floor and left the chips on the mic. What an idiot!

By the way, my mother was the drummer for flock of seagulls and my dad was Johnnie Ramone (I got his height, creamy, pastey green complexion and cat like poses). Fugazi? When I was born, my father was sitting in the waiting room. Does that count?

Thanks ego. I really hoped you'd like this song as it got rather noisey at the end and YOU are one of the noisiest guys I know besides Thurston Moore, in fact, you are the Thurston Moore of Mac Jams, and I mean that.

Thanks for commenting teptep. I experienced both the 70's and the 90's and I think my influences from the 70's were indeed brought into the 2000's while kicking and screaming through the 90's. That's what I think.

Oh Vienna...
I guess I'm not an UV fan, because I didn't recognize the lick. Your synth sounds good, a nice cutting sound for such a guitar-driven mix.

On the whole this is a good sounding mix. The treatment of vocals and guitars is excellent.

What I'm missing is some bass. Until the end, there is essentially no low frequency content.

five_extra_arms said 555 days ago
Oh Vienna
It took me about an hour to figure out which lead snippet I had unintentionally assimilated. It's from Sleepwalk. I sat there singing or humming and couldn't remember the words and couldn't get to my vinyl soon enough to find it. It was an honest mistake - I actually was editing my original synth lead with the pencil tool when I heard a familiar riff.

I continue to experiment with synth sounds combined with distorted guitars or banjos. I haven't gotten tired of it yet, and I hope you don't either.

I also noticed my smoking bass line is invisible in this mix. Thank you so much for the valuable feedback.

Great balls of driving guitar -
I hear some west coast eighties vibe going on here - a little Jello Biafra/Oingo Boingo thing (sorry bout the Oingo Boingo ref - but hey). Wish the drums came more forward - but when the kit's not miced and the guitar's on 11 - shit happens. Nice tune.

Thanks for comparison to those west coast boys. I thought for sure I was as east coast punk as you could get, but I guess I am kinda sensitive, so I can see the Jello/Elfman reference.
