Description This is an update on 'Ambient Values', which I posted here earlier this week. There were a couple of major production errors in that upload that I didn't catch until a day later (I uploaded an 'in progress' version instead of the final product.) However, this serendipitously allowed several folks whose musicality I deeply respect to make comments. I followed some of their advice here, and fixed the latency in the bass & the cut off ending, as well as changing some of the percussion voicings and pushing the tempo just 6 bpm faster. I hope you enjoy these solar winds!

i love this..
& had to fight over headphones to give it a proper listen! beautiful :)

kristyjo said 680 days ago
I'm glad you 'won the battle'
and got a chance to listen to this. I'm hoping to do more in this style as I learn more and listen to the other music in this genre. Thanks for commenting.

music from
hearts of space.......i used to listen to hearts of space on npr radio.....this piece is just what the programmers were playing then....love the otherworldlyness of u r track.....the transporting thru music to other places and spaces.......

kristyjo said 680 days ago
Hey, I've listened to 'Hearts of Space"
long ago - it was on Sunday nights, just before the public radio station went off the air. Thanks for jogging my memory. And thanks too, for taking a listen and sharing your comments.

drakonis said 681 days ago
different enough...
Interesting, this sounds moderately different than the first, could be the slightly faster tempo. Were the initial two synths panned that far apart in the other one? It gives this spatial separation that practically tickles my brain. There are parts in here that remind me a LOT of the great Christopher Franke (from Tangerine Dream) and some of his movie background music for Babylon-5. This is dreamy spacey goodness, and the percussion is so much nicer now, bolder. And, as with all great things, too short... it stopped just as I was reaching escape velocity.... sigh. Excellent work Kristine! I am critique-less :)

Thanks for the re-listening.
I'm glad you liked the 'new improved' percussion. (I'm glad you noted that in the other post, or I might have missed the opportunity to embelish it.) The separation of the opening voices was always there, but had been so heavily reverbed, that the space was dirtied up to the point that it couldn't be heard. I cleaned that up for this posting. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for re-commenting.

wow - COOL!
This is the first ambient track of yours that I've heard, and I'm quite impressed. It's great that you have a variety of musical styles.

Good choice of sounds and good pacing of layers. I particularly like the sixteenth-notes cascading downward. The tympani sound is also a nice, unexpected touch.

(I am very interested in the ambient genre and hope to write some music like this, but don't know much about it.)

However, I would venture to say that a lot of ambient tracks I've heard are longer than this one -- seems to be part of the style, sort of timeless, stretching into infinity -- so I was hoping to hear much more here, because this track has such a pleasant, kicked-back mood.

I hope that you might consider lengthening this to about twice its current size. This music is very cool!

kristyjo said 680 days ago
Thanks for listening!
This is my first foray into the laid-back, s l o w l y d e v el o p i n g world of ambient, and I'm not really sure this fits in that style. As you say, it ought to be longer, and spin out more slowly for the ambient genre. I still work with little kids whose hearts beat at, like, 200 beats per minute, so I still think three minutes is about as long as a song can go on before someone needs to get up and change tracks (LOL). I'm glad you enjoy the layering - That's my favoirte part of this style of music. Thanks for your comments!

One of my...
...early loop & midi pieces was called SOLAR WINDS (long since deleted). I love the concept. I think you have done it justice. There is some similarity between your tune and mine UNTIL the change-up in the mid-section in yours, which is magnificent. Bravo!

Be well!

I'm glad you got a chance to listen, Amagi. It's funny that the name is the same, but not too unusual, I suppose. My daughter was listening to this, and I asked her what I should name this, and 'Solar Winds' was her choice. (Also, I had a yellow iTunes pic that I liked.) I'm glad you commented.

Calchas said 680 days ago
I think...
...your daughter chose well. This definitely fels cosmic!

I'm so glad you listened,
as I noticed your music in this genre quite often, and value your opinion. Thank you for your comments!

Right up my alley!
This was a nice one! Just the sort I like. Fav'd and DL'd, so thanks!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for letting me know it was worth downloading for you. (That's always a boost to my ego!)

Love that artwork!
Nice little synth piece here, enjoy the darker direction you took, The drum splash effect is really cool, relaxing yet intriging, good song-MJG

kristyjo said 679 days ago
Thanks for listening!
I'm glad you noticed the drum effects. It took me a long time to go through the available drum kits in my various jam packs. (I'm still a newbie when it comes to midi percussion). They're fun to play with, and add a lot of color (and lots more decision making) to the final piece.

MJG said 675 days ago
I agree with ya KJ
Newbie 2 over here on the drum loops. sometimes we use the 8-tracks, sometimes the yahmaha keyboards, and my cousin for the live songs. Just got fool around with the sounds. Take care-MJG

Ohhhh, Kristine
Too short. That's my only critique. This was pure pleasure to listen to. Sometimes ambient tracks go on too long. But this one could have gone on longer for my money. Super job--it just swept me away.

I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. 'Too short' is the general consensus, which is, I s'pose better than 'too long'. Now, if they only had a genre called 'ambient for ADHD composers', I think I'd fit in perfectly.
Thanks for your comments!

jgurner said 678 days ago
Nice....
....and relaxing.

kristyjo said 677 days ago
Thanks for listening
I'm glad it's relaxing for you, although I think it's probably still a little bit too loud for you to play in the liberry.

jpfeiff said 677 days ago
Tangerine-esque
Reminds me the old days sitting around my dorm room with the lights off, a certain something burning in the water pipe, and Tangerine Dream cranked on the stereo!

Very peaceful, builds nicely--in fact, it lacks the crazy crescendo that many Tangerine Dream songs would build to, and thankfully so...

Glad to kick off
some nostalgia for you. I never was into this style as a college student - I was a music major, and had 'listening tests' to get into, and some guy I was nuts about who enjoyed jazz, so I listened to that (didn't learn much, though). I'm learning to appreciate this style, I think, and will be doing more listening to artists here and some of those pros who've been mentioned.

Macaudion said 677 days ago
Burrr...
This really got my imagination stirring, Kristyjo. You got some wonderful ambient sounds flowing here. Of course, I really liked the percussive work in this. As hot as I can imagine solor winds to be, I felt the eerie cold emptyness of space on this. I was transported, to say the least. Nice work!

Thanks

Macca

Hello!
I'm so glad you dropped by to listen to this! I do appreciate your comments, and you brought up an interesting 'alternative' interpretation to the piece. To be honest, it wasn't conceived as programatic material, but the idea that the title gives it does tend to pull me in a certain direction. Maybe like many of the Baroque composers, I should title it something like Etude 37 or something to let ideas flow unhindered from the music to the listener.

thoughts from the bull...
i can't really add much to what has been said. this is simply a lovely
piece that deserves as much attention as it gets. it's a keeper and i'm
glad i came across it.

actually, i discovered it by chance at MacIdol where it's received some
very nice praise, as well.

great music! big applause on this!

kristyjo said 675 days ago
Thanks, BtB
I'm glad you found it. There's really a lot of music around here, lately, it seems. That's great, but I don't get around to all of the new tunes, either.

Thanks for the heads up about rating on MacIdol. I haven't figured out that place, really. That's why I get my 'fix' here at MacJams. So simple a music teacher can figure it out.

Great comp
I love those deep tones. Very nice environment. Fullness. Makes me want to go solar sailing!

kristyjo said 667 days ago
Solar sailing - Sounds like fun!
I'm glad you came to listen to my forray into this style of music. I always appreciate a comment from a fellow Wisconsinite. Hey - I like the picture! When did you go there for a visit?

Doadars Uncle said 667 days ago
On Wisconsin!
Yes, I felt I needed a change in my world view. But since I decided to come back to earth. I just like the atmosphere around here!

Mesmerizing...
It did take me a while to get into this space, but as the chords keep changing at the same pace, and different percussion elements come and go I was quite fascinated by the atmosphere you create here! Unhurried, poised, almost mantric. I am still hitting the repeat button, so I guess I'm hooked! Really interesting, beautiful piece.

Glad you got to listen.
This is a new genre/style for me, so I appreciate all of the comments I receive! I'm glad you enjoy it!

Right up my alley
I like what I hear, and it was my first pick too. The synthesizer's pads with a saw wave edge addition always mix nicely imo. When the drums and appegio patterns kick in; it smoothly adds to the atmosphere with a little bit of drama. Thanks for sharing. I'll be listening in for more.

Very well built , peacefull piece . I think of these sounds like when on a plane going fast we see evrything below going slowly .Time perception differences ...

kristyjo said 464 days ago
Thanks for listening!
I actually hadn't listened to this in awhile, so it was nice to see that someone new enjoyed and commented on it! I like your idea about time and space moving differently depending on our perspective.
