Description This is the second in a series of collaborations between Mystified and myself under the working title "Lady of the Lake." This one is from the opera I was working on entitled "Merlyn."

Merlyn is about age 45 in this story, a druid and kingmaker, who is lover to the Lady of the Lake. The Lady is the head priestess of a female religious enclave, a bastion of ancient celtic traditions, and a threat to the emerging "conservative" Roman Catholic order. The Lady and nearly all of her fellow priestesses are murdered, slaughter brutally, in a sweep of the countryside meant to purge Britain of all pagan influences; which meant, also, a silencing of all female and non-roman power centers. This scene takes place just before this slaughter. The Lady knows what is about to happen, but will not run, even though she urges Merlyn to. This track does not include the possible spoken dialogue between them.

What we wanted to accomplish with this is a true sense of womanly seductive passion, but one completely different than what is normally associated with the word "seduction." A passion based in devotion, surrender, beauty, and a sense of holiness. I think Mystified succeeds brilliantly. She sings not only the part of The Lady (both her thoughts and her words), but also the other women surrounding them who are living through the two of them at that moment, vicariously.

Lyrics Last Embrace Behind the Wall (I Am Yours)

I, I, I, I am yours, I, I, I am...

Hear the calling. Hear the calling. Oh.
Hear the calling.

Hear me. Hear my love for you that's here, my love. ...

With each footfall... (here, my hands)
each breath... (here, my heart)
you draw near to me... (here, my lips)
near to me. (impart)

I, I, I, I am; I, I, I, I am yours

(Hear my arms.) Hear my eyes. (My hands.)
Hear my arms, (my lips), the forest aching for you.
(Here, my heart.) Hear the life (I'm yours) of the morning,
(hear my life) as you pull the stars from the sky...
I bring you all I have, all I have.
I bring you all I have.

(ah....) I've missed you. [Merlyn enters. They embrace.]

I am yours. (I hear the calling.)
I am yours. (Alive again, again.)
I am yours. (I hear the calling.)
I am alive again, again.

All the prayers, all the grace, fall silent when you arrive...
All the world falls away when I have you and you have me.

(I, I, I, I am, I, I, I am...)
You make me a goddess, a goddess.
You are my god, my god.

Hear my arms, my hands, my lips, they will sing you
Hear my heart in yours, hear my life
I bring you all I have, all I have
I bring you all I have.

Hold me. Hold me. Hold me forever more.
Hold me. Hold me. Hold me forever more.

Cover me like heaven
and make me the world
wrap the stars around me
and know I am yours

Although I see them falling in, the walls I once condemned,
I hear the spears against the shields, the life we can't defend.
Now you must run and you must hide beyond the shadow's reach
and know that there is life again
and love that won't be breached.

I am yours. I am yours. I am, I am, I am yours.
I am yours.

[Merlyn exits. The Lady stays behind with the rest of the hermitage women to face Claudas, the Roman envoy, and certain death. Not to worry, however, she comes back as a ghost, which is a nice theatrical ploy, although not fully appreciated by Merlyn.]

Thanks. You latest submission, "angels of the road," most be one of the things
you are referring to: http://www.macjams.com/song/17219, an excellent track.
Yes, Mystie makes it seem like you are encircled by angels. It is heaven working
with her.

Seduction is right!
This is so rich; it could so easily have turned into chaos, with all the
vocal parts and the instruments, but you have such a confidence, Tobin
and used restraint in creating the lushness. I'm genuinely moved.

Mysti, your voice truly embodies seduction in the way Tobin described
it. It's an interesting concept and you truly interpreted the music
perfectly. (Could I borrow that B below high C the next time you're not
using it? WOW!)

Seduction is right!
How we did this one: First, the instruments were played and layered, I think
about 36 tracks (lots of string layers to get a sound I liked); which I mixed
and submitted last year as "Merlyn's Sight." Then I added vocals to the 2-
track instrumental mix, singing in all the parts myself, most in falsetto but
some not, I think about 6 tracks of harmony, and I wasn't really paying
attention to how low I sang, thinking the Mystified would change registers to
whatever worked (as well as changed notes to fit her range). She came back
with 8 tracks, 2 new ones of improvised harmony additions, all of which I cut
and pasted to create around 20 tracks in places for a more surround sound
vocal doubling feel. If you added up the GB2 files I used, I think it gobbled up
1.34 Gig. As big as a set backdrop at the Met! Mystie's vocal wall of sound
makes visualizing this so easy. I love her low range too. Thank you, Mystie!

Mission Accomplished
I admit that this style of music does not appeal to me, but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate it. The production is great on this. I agree with ledebutant; this could have become chaos quite quickly, but the both of you did a fantastic job keeping it under control. The music really captured the scene, and the vocals...well, a command performance. All in all, I'm quite impressed. Well done, and thanks for posting.

So intricate, so complex, and so well done by both of you. Cat, your
singing is, as usual, awesome.

I have seen...
...exactly one opera (Carmen), but if I ever get the chance to see this one,
I'll be first in line. I can see in my mind the setting you have described
above, the Lady and her followers awaiting with poise their inevitable fate.
The tune is beautiful and powerful, and as you said, shows the passion of
seduction in a way that's not always normally shown. Mysti's weaving and
intertwining vocals give it a surreal, unEarthly feel. Wonderful job, Tobin
and Mysti. Can't wait to hear the rest.

We will have to have a special Macjammers Night at the opera, rope off a whole
section just for Mjers, wouldn't that be hoot? I get to sit next to Alan Fraser!

Strings
I'd love to hear this with a real orchestra! It's such a beautiful piece, but
it would be so much warmer with real strings. Judging from this and
the other "Merlyn" pieces I've heard, I think it would be a stunning
opera. Mysti's voice floats effortlessly as well. Lady of the Lake could
be the next Queen of the Night!

TobinMueller said 1048 days ago
Strings
I can still remember the first time I directed a real orchestra. I had written a
symphony while still in high school and my personal instructor (who was also a
prof at Lawrence) talked them into performing it. When my baton came down
and everyone played what had only been in my head up until then, I nearly
collapsed at the podium. What a rush. Yes, having a real orchestra play would
be more than thrilling. But where am I going to find mutliple Mystifieds to sing?
That only happens in the virtual world. Emily, we'd have to ask you to come and
sing too!

Jim Bouchard said 1048 days ago
Strings
I'm with Emily on this one! The strings unfortunately don't do this excellent
composition justice. Excellent idea to invite Emily, BTW. "Do I know him?" is
one of my all time favs on MacJams, just a delight everytime it comes up
through the shuffle on my iPod.

Other than that, on a more original note, I really am totally impressed by this
piece, though it's a little much for my feeble musical mind to process entirely.
Very complicated, and Mysti is wonderful throughout!

I got a little excited when I saw this song title as I thought for a moment that
my latest collab with macgalver, <a href="http://www.macjams.com/song/
17055">I'm Yours</a>, had ended up on the top of the ratings picks
somehow! But you are more worthy of that place than I, I think...

But that's just my taste. :)
It's good hearing something like this being sung in English.
Most excellent singing and production on this.

Wonderful melodies
Excellent work here, very strong melodies, well arranged and Mysti's in
fine voice - very rousing finale!

My only crit is that the vocals all need to be further forward in the mix - I
found it quite hard to hear the 'backing' vox at times.

But other than that, well done to you both, an ambitious project pulled off
with aplomb!

TobinMueller said 1046 days ago
Wonderful melodies
It was a tough call, deciding how to put so many layers of vocals far enough
forward without erasing the sound of certain accompaniment instruments,
especially the double reeds. I tried to make sure the lyrics that needed to come
forward were highlighted, and I treated most of the backing vocals like they
were part of the orchestra, blending them in with the strings. It sounds much
better in headphones, by the way, and needs to be turned up a hair, since I
rarely compress my tracks enough for playing alongside normal pop and rock
mixes.

lyrics...very nicely done. Keep up the great work!

Impressive writing, vocals, mix
I was able to hear this along the way, although the rough version Cat
let me liaten to was very rough. Eight vocal tracks on top of however
many instrumental tracks you had, Tobin. I wondered how it would all
sound when mixed? Could it be mixed? Well, I think in addition to
everything else mentioned above, the production on this piece is very
impressive. Mixing 8 Cats. That's a job. Although, I'm sure, also a
pleasure. Very nice job.

TobinMueller said 1046 days ago

I would really love to hear this with a real orchestra! That was really the

Great work!

very moving.
A beautiful piece. The singing is stunning. The composition is so
delicate and touching. I like the instruments, I was missing low-end
sounds. To me, more liberal use of deeper-voiced instruments would
have added a richness and contrast to the many high-pitched
instruments. Although, that said, I think this is amazing work! Bravo!

TobinMueller said 1046 days ago
very moving.
When I originally conceived this, it was to use a pit orchestra setting, which is
sparse on low end sounds. Mainly cellos that, on this song, play higher, so I
know what you mean. But I've always loved string pieces, like Tchaikovsky's
Serenade for Strings, that use the higher vibrations of the middle strings to
achieve an ethereal energy. But, you are right, to balance all the sopranos, more
lower end would help.

Great use of strings. Shows what's possible. Sadly it'll never be in the top 20.

Thanks to everyone who has posted and commented on this song.
Thanks too, for all the kind comments about the vocals!

I'll have to admit, I've not sung something this challenging or rigorous
for a very long time. I recorded the 7 tracks over a 3-day period and
sent them over to Tobin, giving him the honor of do all the mixing.

Thank goodness! You did a wonderful job mixing in all those vocals,
Tobin.

Thank you! :)

Thrilling finish
Although there are a few clunkers in the opening bars, this is fine vocal work. I am very impressed with the placement of the soprano's voice in the stereo field, both left-right and forward-back. It gives a marvelous sense of dimensionality, or internal thought, to the work. In my mind, most of the sung parts are thoughts, internalized emotions, and the way they swirl and live is accumulative and thrilling. The penultimate section is my favorite, leading into the final statement. Bravo.

Mystified said 1042 days ago
Thrilling finish
Well...it just wouldn't be a Mystified performance without a few 'clunkers,' now,
would it? ;)

Thanks for listening, and for your comments.

ziti said 1042 days ago
mulletsrock
yer nuts!

you hear clunkers in everything mysti sings....and most of the other
female singers on the site. You always say the same thing...pitch
problems.....get your ears checked!

Mysti's singing here is a remarkable accomplishment...tobin delights in
writing complex music. What Mysti has done here is not only vocal
genius, it raises the level of the rather tepid composition to the level of
passion tobin was apparently shooting for.

I can't really comment too much on the music, as I have no expertise in
stuff like this. But it doesn't have a natural flow to me. I feel a stop/
start sensation rather than a flow. The percussion only added to this
sensation. And when it finally reaches the climax, it feels suddenly
rushed. This rushed sensation gives the ending a very forced feel to
me. I have no idea how you would correct this, i know nothing about
the pacing of theis type of music. But it just doesn't have a organic feel
to it, to my ears/

Hats off to Tobin for his remarkable talent and ambition to even try to
create this style of music using the tools we have at our disposal.
Pretty Unreal! and very impressive.

TobinMueller said 1042 days ago
mulletsrock
Thanks, Ziti. But I really do dig the tools at our disposal, since they are a perfect
"drawing board" or "sketch pad" for working out ideas. And, tapping into a
wonderful community like MJ is an even cooler "tool" without which most of the
music I have posted here would never have been made.

thoddi said 1041 days ago
Impressive
I can identify with several of the comments that has been written on this.
Like Corporal Beef sais; "about that the style of music does not appeal to me, but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate it. "

And what ziti mentions: "I can't really comment too much on the music, as I have no expertise in stuff like this."

But, i've listened some times to it, and will tell you my thoughts.

I am very impressed with how you've put everything together, how the arrangements is made, and the incredible amount of work that must have been has been put into it. Writing this in a score, seeing the whole picture of the different elements and when and how they appear in the music or on stage is something you do with great authority Tobin.

Mysti's singing is very good, and the interpretation, shows to me a sense of holiness, suited to your description of the lady in the story. This style of music must crave great accuracy of the vocalist. So its a good statement of which qualities she possesses:)

No doubt this is professionally delivered from both of you. Congratulations on a job well done!

interesting subject matter
The thematic material as presented in the written introduction, along with the lyrics, are very interesting subject matter.

However, they did not come across clearly in this music -- the textures were too thick and vox too far back in the mix for me to understand the words.

The overall musical atmosphere created here is very faithful to the subject; it has a vivid medieval/England/fantasy flavor.

The musical accompaniment seemed too "present" in the mix here, so the voice was not center stage -- it was more of a background "spice" (to my ears, anyway).

There was a definite emphasis on the "highs" in the sound-spectrum on this recording -- very little lower end. I would have liked to hear more of a full, rich sound overall, with a discernable bass-line.

The textures did not really vary much throughout the piece. It was a constant "wash of sound". Thinning out the textures in spots would have made this piece more musically interesting, as well as provide a break for the ears.

All this having been said, I do think that you are going in a good direction with this; the overall concept of the piece (and suite) is beguiling. I hope that some of the above observations can help in some way.

fatastro said 1037 days ago
lilting, beautiful
I'm jealous,... I wish I wrote this. Seriously, though you and Mysified
really created a very evocative piece, sweet and sad, with no pretense.
It makes me wish I were more articulate, so my review could be more
glowing. I love the story, too. What a concept; actually having a
cohesive narrative, and then wrapping the music around this idea.
Home Run! You speak music, fluently.

Tobin, this is excellent as usual. You and Mystified make an excellent
team. The vocal layering is well-conceived and superbly executed.

I like the "real" touch of the hand percussion.

Sounds like Renaissance music on steroids! (I meant that in a good
way.)

I love the phrase "Renaissance music on steroids." Thanks for the nice

Hear The Calling
Really intriguing number. The overlapping vocal arrangement gives this piece a mystical quality that is very pleasant to listen to...I wonder what this would sound like if the strings were pitched a couple of octaves lower as they seem to be in constant tension with the high vocals...There is, ultimately no respite from the high tessatura of everything and I'm exhausted by the end. Just a thought.... I've always loved vocal harmony, but if the text has to be read to understand it, I wonder if the lyric really has anything to do with the music. A lot of opera (from the past) has struck me this way, too. Reading the libretto is sometimes pretty disappointing... Anyway, I hope you don't find my comments too negative. I'm heartened by the skill of your composition and am now going to find anotherof your comps to peak my interest this morning. Take care.
