Description Written in response to our Christmas/New Year holiday period and the prospect of becoming grandparents looming large after our daughter’s visit. “Up To You” touches on helplessness, love, getting older (and the passing of time), song writing, as well as the more immediate problem of a huge bushfire burning across the bay near friends’ houses. It’s about my feelings of sadness as I consider the world we’re leaving for our children’s children, and about the temporary nature of our lives in “the big picture”. It reflects my developing interest in Bob Dylan – reading his autobiography, watching the Scorcese film and listening to his music again after many years. Most of all it’s about the urgent need for all of us to “look after the planet” – it’s UP TO YOU!

At the same time, I think it’s a fairly positive song musically - there are 3 guitar tracks: strummed rhythm left and picked rhythm right, with the lead break centre. There are two vox tracks (with echo on the lead) with no other effects – second take on both. Playing the bass track on this was a blast, and I’ve left in some artefacts of my enthusiasm (no quantising here!). Hammond organ courtesy of Yamaha and Logic – I must learn to play keys properly one day! Finally, the drums and tambourine (for Ed!) rounded it all off. The song is longer than intended, but to me at least (and my darling daughter Mardi) the groove makes that OK!

Song art - Black & white detail from Picasso's Guernica, 1937. The painting is a response to the bombing of a Basque town during the Spanish civil war. (This poster features in Jim Mann's book Peace Signs).

As with all of my songs, Dr Jiguma suggests that you PLAY IT LOUD for best results!
Lyrics Up To You
© Neil Porter 2005

The new year turns, I think of
How our lives are written in the sand
As each new day goes by
I try my very best to understand

Bushfire burns across the bay
Sometimes things happen that aren’t planned
As each new day goes by
I try my very best to understand

Ch
What can you do?
Go with the flow
It’s up to you
Which way you go
World needs some help right now
It’s really up to you

The earth keeps spinning
As we make our lonely way around the sun
As each new day goes by
I think of all the crazy things I’ve done

Maybe I’m living in the past
Maybe my memory’s finally gone
As each new day goes by
I think of all the crazy things I’ve done

Broken things make me ill at ease
That clock that’s waiting on the wall
These times have got me on the run
Dylan said “a song is like a dream”
This is my first dream of the year
I’ll simply smile when it is done

INSTRUMENTAL

Ch
What can you do?
Go with the flow
It’s up to you
Which way you go
World needs some help right now
It’s really up to you

I saw King Kong this afternoon
It made things strangely seem so clear
As each new day goes by
I find the time to shed another tear

This world I’m living in just isn’t how I
Thought the world would be
As each new day goes by
I shed a tear for many things I see

Ch
What can you do?
Go with the flow
It’s up to you
Which way you go
World needs some help right now
It’s really up to you

Broken things make me ill at ease
That clock that’s waiting on the wall
These times have got me on the run
Dylan said “a song is like a dream”
This is my first dream of the year
I’ll simply smile when it is done

The new year turns, I think of
How our lives are written in the sand
As each new day goes by
I try my very best to understand

Bushfire burns across the bay
Sometimes things happen that aren’t planned
As each new day goes by
I try my very best to understand

Ch
What can you do?
Go with the flow
It’s up to you
Which way you go
World needs some help right now
It’s really up to you

Very sweet
A lovely expression of a dark and urgent message in your usual sunny
Aussie style. That contrast really heightens it.

The harmony vocals aren't quite tight in a few places, but as you say,
this song is more about enthusiasm than technical perfection. I love
the way the lines 'Dylan said “a song is like a dream”/This is my
first dream of the year/I’ll simply smile when it is done' flow straight
into each other without a pause.

The lead break is just the right volume, I think!

Thanks for listening Rebsie, and for the first comment for the tune. Glad the
solo is OK - nearly pulled it after our chat session :)

My songs tend to be on the loose end of the spectrum, but I thought the
vocals on this were a bit tighter than usual - will have to have a good listen
(not again!!!!).

Cheers,

I am new to the site and just jumping around and found this song and I
like it. Reminds me of Major Tom a bit with your vocals. Not sure why lol
because the song doesn't really remind me of it but your vocals are very
well done. As the other person that posted here said the vocals sync is a
bit off but maybe that is the way it should be :D

Welcome to MacJams WG, and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
I'm trying to find where my vocals fit in, and this style is the one that I so far
feel most comfortable with. Vocal sync has never been a strong point for me,
but I'll look at another version of this sometime.

Hi Steve, not surprised by the Bowie comment - not something I consciously
aim for, but certainly he is one of my musical heroes. Saw him live in Sydney
last year and loved the show. The Dylan thing is something of a rediscovery
for me. I always liked Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, but never
really got into the (myriad of) other albums. His autobiography (Vol 1) is
fascinating, and I'm beginning to really appreciate his incredible skill with
words.
Thanks for the comments, really appreciate them as usual!

YeAH, Brother
Where to start?

Great Groove, (and your daughter is right, Not Too Long).
Rhythm Guitars are very Cool and their energies do not cancel one
another.
What a Rhythm Section: Drums are everywhere they are supposed to
be and nowhere else (Great Mix).
Bass is A Main Course, tonight! Exuberant and Much more of a Player
than any Typical Rock-ish Bass. Full Round sound. Not one bit
overdone, in my opinion.

The Rode (or some aspect of the Mix) leaves the second voice a bit
Thin, somehow. Were I Phil Spector, I'd back it off and thicken it by
doubling and some EQ. However, it is lithe and active and is hardly a
detraction (though I think that is the root of the "Major Tom" ideation,
which I suspect was not your intention (to orient by disorienting
anything).

I find the Melody brilliantly understated, thereby providing the space
for the Breadth of the comment of the Lyric, from Macro external to the
awe of the Personal (such as:"As each new day goes by - I find the
Time to shed another Tear"). Whew!

That said, I'm not ready to say this is your Best - just the Best to Date,
in several, courageous ways.

I Like It.

Best,
rtc

YeAH, Brother
Hey Cooper, really glad you had time to drop in and listen. Thanks for the
very kind words. The RODE NT3 is something I'm still coming to terms with -
before I bought it, Curry said that it was big at the treble end, and initially I
really liked the way it boosted my treble, but I'm beginning to think I might
need to do some EQ work on it. It's still a very nice mic though, and I'm very
happy with it. What I have discovered is that I'm beginning to love doing
vocals, and look forward most to the time in a new song that I get to sing.
Thanks, and take care my friend,

Oddly uplifting
Not "feel good" by any means, but hopeful. The world will be what we
make it. Very nice.

The bass line does sound like it was a lot of fun to do. The two rhythm
guitar parts give it a nice breezy feel.

Be sure you take your guitar and play and sing to the new grandbaby as
soon as possible. It's never too early to start your future fan base. :)

Thanks for giving it a listen Joseph. Our granddaughter isn't due until early
June, so you can expect lots of doting grandpa songs around then. Mardi
heard lots of music when she was growing up, and plays piano rather well -
my musical role will be to ensure the bub has a positive experience with
guitars as well as keyboards :)
Always appreciate your comments.

after litening to your great track with SIL-VER! "Unique and familiar" - I

mixing seems to be much easier and with a much better result. Cheers,

Cheers Nolan, nice to hear from someone up the coast a bit. I really
appreciate your comments - natural sound is what I seem to do best. This
was written on the 44 degree day we had on New Years Day, and the
Merimbula bushfire was looking totally out of control - considering we back
onto National Park, I was in a very reflective mood!!

One of the things I find interesting about this is just the relentlessness
of it. The way the bass line just keeps going at the same pace with a
similar rhythm never stopping is great. If it were a loop, it would get
very boring, but because the piece has a great imperfect jam sort of
sound it kind of sounds as if you could be%2

Unfortunately, MacJams seemed to crash halfway through... so here's the rest
of the Comment

... but because the piece has a great imperfect jam sort of sound it kind of
sounds as if you could be playing the piece for ages it if weren't for that fade
out. If you wanted to make sure that piece didn't begin to feel to long, a nice
small change in density could easily work... take out some of the guitars
during the latter chorus' tempoarily to mix it up a little... just not the bass
cause thats relentlessness is cool.

Quite liked this piece, really enjoy your singing and playing.

Thanks for the comment Bryan, I had the same crash in chat last night.
Relentless I'm good at :) You've raised a point which has been in the back of
my mind, but which I haven't acted on yet - that is to start putting more light
and shade into my songs. I have a tendency to go full tilt once I get an idea,
and this shows up in my music. The idea of dropping perhaps the LH guitar
in some choruses would be a start when I remix.
Really appreciate your comments,

After almost two weeks of being away, and or being offline
The first thing IL do is pick through my over 50 emails in quest of a
Jiguma tune - Ahhh.... -

Don't know why ths one made me cry... - And then there were the
chills up my being... - And then there was the smile that was smacking
the underside of both earlobes - And some more tears... - Through it
all; head bobbing, crying, smiling (that solo groove really did it), and
the phat chills, as I was listening I kept thinking, I can't wait to ride
this again... And of course, this will require that I download yet another
excellent J groove that moves ya the way a tune should. Did I mention
how much I really lyked this one...Yea, I really do - Thanks, Neil - Dion

Hi Dion - as usual, I've been looking forward to your visit - you always make
my day with your flattering comments. Glad the roller coaster got you on this
one - that was how I was feeling when I wrote it. Thanks for noticing the solo
too. I was really pleased with myself for that - I had it in my head for quite a
while, but was worried I wouldn't be able to pull it off. When it was time to
record it, the notes just fell out of the guitar and with a few well chosen
effects, the desired feel was achieved. I'm on the lookout for a tune we can
work together on if you're still interested - I'll just have to wait till it happens
(I never seem to have any luck when I plan my next song - something
different always seems to come up)!
Thanks for all your support - I really appreciate it.

Up to you? If it's up to me...
...I'll make you president of Australia (or is it prime minister?), and
maybe you can help everyone make this a better world.

Message is powerful and the lyrics reveal your poetic genius. The
rather unusual rhythmic superimpositions has an appealing novelty to
it. There is almost an almost imperceptible touch of dissonance but I
believe it is what spices up this song. Vocals are soothingly unique
with the harmonies, too. Melody is mostly in the minor key and has
little variation or build to sustain the interest and seems to languish a
bit towards the end..but musically maybe that is the idea. That little
nit-picking aside, this is overall a wonderful tune worth listening to
repeatedly, its music for the heart to relish and its message for the
mind to digest.

jiguma said 1053 days ago
Up to you? If it's up to me...
Thanks Leon, appreciate your visit. My musical background has been less
than technical - I don't read, have only ever had about 10 lessons (when I was
8 or 9), and have played mainly in fairly loose outfits. The fact that the vocals
are in a minor key is interesting news to me :) What has always been
important to me is "feel", and I guess dissonance, unusual rhythms and
uniqueness contribute to that. I agree that things slow down a bit (musically,
not bpm) towards the end, and I think I've discovered why - will adjust if I
ever remix this. I left the song longer than it perhaps needed to be partly
because I had some nice bass things happening towards the end and didn't
want to cut them out. Glad you had time to visit and comment Leon, Cheers,

This tune is deep. It grabs me. Recognise many of the feelings. Am only
53 ... but it passes ... it is a bad, sad and dangerous world growing ... and
one day the kids are going have to make it without me ... realizing that,
has been my probably most serious existential confrontation so far ...

By the way I've had a Dylan revival period too, peeking last summer with
the reading of his biography, which was a stong experience that changed
my attitude to life a little ...

Grabs me
Thanks Curry - glad it resonated for you. I guess our similar ages mean that
we are likely to have some similar viewpoints from which we observe the
world. I'm not usually a negative person, but I do get very concerned about
where we are heading (or being led, more precisely). The apparent disregard
for the big picture (in favour of personal interest) by all sorts of people does
bother me a lot. I suspect that the best we can do for our kids to cope with
the future is to give them all the skills we can and to give unconditional love
(as well as try to vote in reasonable politicians).
As always Curry, I appreciate your comments and support.

I'm too new to rate, but I can apparently still comment, so allow me: I
really enjoyed the song as driven by the guitar counterpoints. I thought
the bass was well done - I am in awe of multi-instrumentalists like
yourself. I would normally consider the length of the song a bit long,
but the fact that it is a story-song makes that not so bad. I like that
your vocal timing is not right on the beat - gives it a trippy, syncopated
flavor. Very good stuff from down under!

Very Cool!
Glad you liked it Erwin. I have been a huge fan of the Hammond sound since
I listened to various British bands in the late 60s/early 70s - Julie Driscool
and Brian Auger's Trinity being my favourite. I played bass (rather badly) in a
Hammond/drums/bass jazz/rock trio in my late teens and couldn't believe
the richness and versatility of the B3. Always wanted my own, but as I don't
play keys, found it difficult to convince my wife it was a good idea! Enter GB/
Logic and my daughter's old Yamaha PSR300, and I have a Hammond on tap -
and with pencilling, can make it sound almost believable.

inspired lyrics & vocals
This song grabbed me right from the beginning, with its catchy percussion and guitar.

Then the vocals immediately command attention -- great lyrics, sung in almost a folky style similar to Simon & Garfunkel.

I like the loose feel of the vocals; they're almost conversational. The quickly-moving words descending downwards in pitch are very effective.

Also, great diction and intonation; every word comes through clearly. The harmonies are excellent.

There is a certain "winsome" quality while you are telling this story.

I like the little guitar break towards the middle and would have liked to hear more of that. Nice playing.

The layers of drums, guitar and organ combine together in a very pleasing way, creating an interesting and beguiling sound "tapestry"!

The treatment of drums was especially interesting at the very beginning with the thinner texture. Although the later pattern, with the "hits" on beats #3 was very catchy and effective, it might have been nice to vary the texture a little, using the earlier, more transparent drum pattern a couple more times throughout the song.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. Great job, Neil!

jiguma said 1053 days ago
inspired lyrics & vocals
Good to hear from you Cameron. Thanks for the positive rap - the drums are
the hardest part of my recording at the moment. I have been a closet
drummer for decades, always pumping away at imaginary bass drums and
snares, and relishing the chance to play "air cymbal" along with my favourite
records. The reality of course is that getting good beats behind a song is
quite difficult. I recently changed from using loops to pencilling my own
rhythms (using midi loops as a starting point), and have found the results
(especially in Logic Express) to be much more satisfying (although much more
time consuming). I think the major difference towards the end of the song
was the addition of tambourine after the solo. This is a habit I've developed
since joining MJ, and I like the way it lifts the solo and provides colour to the
later verses. In this case I think it would have worked if the song was 2
verses shorter as I had planned. Perhaps removing the tambo for the 2
verses after the break might have added some dynamics. Your comment is in
the memory bank for my next song. Thanks again for taking the time to
write such a comprehensive comment.

Great Influences
I think the reason I like your music so much is that it fairly resonates
with your 60's influences but just enough so that you know they are
there but the songs always remain your own. I had heard Byrds, Dylan,
Beatles, Beach Boys but hadn't heard the Bowie influence until someone
mentions Major Tom and then yep there it is. Amazing that you soaked
up all of that music and now it comes seeping back out so many years
later in your own style and vision.

Interesting comment Tom. With a bit of luck perhaps Poco, Little Feat, and
some early British R&B bands will make appearances soon :) I hadn't really
thought about this much before your post to this song, but I have to say that
there's nothing conscious going on in this regard - the songs appear, and I
produce them as best I can. I'm really glad that the results appeal to you.
