Description A bit difficult to explain - lets just say it was the result of some stressful times at work. About the need to deal with feeling "beyond blue".

Beyond Blue

Had a lot of fun doing it though!

PLAY IT LOUD!

Song art by Karen Green Recor
Lyrics People Beyond Blue
© Neil Porter 12/2005

You spend another day
Asleep behind the wheel
You’ve left the autopilot on
You don’t know what to say
Can’t remember how to feel
Sometimes

Chorus:
You’ve come a long, long way
You’ve got a long, long way to go
On every lonely day
You’re thinking to yourself
“I had it all”
Living on the road again

You learnt the danger signs
When you were in school
For people beyond blue
You don’t know who to tell
You don’t know what to say
When the danger signs fit you

Chorus:
You’ve come a long, long way
You’ve got a long, long way to go
On every lonely day
You’re thinking to yourself
“I had it all”
Living on the road again

Refrain:
Each day’s a new beginning
You can tell it to a friend
Even though you’re thinking
That the pain will never end
They gave you all the numbers
They’re waiting on the phone
You can catch them on an email
You don’t have to be alone

You’re searching hard for something
You’re running out of time
Don’t feel like going on
You turn the final corner
There’s another hill to climb
The road goes on

Chorus:
You’ve come a long, long way
You’ve got a long, long way to go
On every lonely day
You’re thinking to yourself
“I had it all”
Living on the road again

You spend another day
Asleep behind the wheel
You’ve left the autopilot on
You don’t know what to say
Can’t remember how to feel
Sometimes

I tried to figure out what it is that makes up the "jiguma sound".

There is the chordprogressions or the way you play the chords on the 12 string guitar that is related through your collection of songs here. And the complex rhythm patterns with the tambourine makes a connection. Also the bassline that moves like a wave together with the 12 string is something I recognize from other songs you have here.
Your characteristic voice is of course a very important ingredient:)

This song lines up with the other good songs you have here jiguma. Great work!

Thanks for the comment Thor. It's been really good to finally be able to use
the 12 string more now that I have a good mic. I love the combination of
"jangly" 12 string and rolling bass, so I suspect you'll be hearing more of it.

quote todde "I tried to figure out what it is that makes up the "jiguma sound". " I was thinking the excact same thing when
i heard this tune. very nice beats in this, and you sing in a
quite mysterious way! I think this is the best jiguma song i have
ever heard!!

Thanks Selters,
Glad you took the time to listen! The "mysteriousness" is just the way I sound
(plus a little fiddling with effects here and there).
Cheers,
Neil

claustrophobic
Interesting, the lyrics suggest expanses but the sound feels a bit
claustrophobic. I like.

All the instruments sound great. I like the panning.

jiguma said 1082 days ago
claustrophobic
Thanks for the comment CJ, glad you liked it. It was odd the way this worked
out - the lyrics were supposed to be the limiter over an expansive
soundscape, but I think all the minimal movements (one note here and there)
in the chord structures made the music a bit creepy ond overbearing.
Cheers,
Neil

I think
One of the things that give your tunes such a unique sound is there is a
dreamy quality to the vocals, emphasized by some of the things
mentioned in some of the other comments. But you've definitely got a
very unique sound and I enjoy it very much.

I agree with cjhoose, this one makes me feel like the walls are closing in
on a miserable rainy day. It's very expressive while at the same time being
almost repressed. Almost sounds like it's being sung through gritted
teeth at times.

Great work, Neil. Hopefully some great therapy (or at least stress relief)?

jiguma said 1082 days ago
I think
Nice comments Joseph. I suspect that the dreamy voice is both a blessing but
also a curse, in that I can't sing some of the music I'd like to write. As I've
only been singing for less than a year, I'm happy with the way its progressing,
and beginning to understand better what I am able to do with it. The main
thing for me in all this is that I'm having an absolute ball writing and
performing.
I should add that the song was written from a therapist's viewpoint rather
than the patient - although sometimes the difference between the two is only
minimal!
Thanks,
Neil

Blue wandering
Wonderful from the introduction.
A rhythm is peculiar again.
The percussion instrument is effective.
The singing voice is ..spiritual world.. ..wandering.. ..floatage.. ..
Asia..Australia.
The artwork is a special impression.
Wonderful one.

Thank you Tadashi, I always enjoy your comments. The painting is one I
found on the web - but it is a style I am especially fond of. The link to the
artist's site is on the page - she is very talented I think.
I really appreciate your comment about the percussion - you are the master
of percussion.

excellent!
This reminds of Bruce Cockburn, and I think it is the rolling rhythm and fingerpicking...it's a style I really admire. Very good, and the only thing that I was expecting that never really came around was a redemptive passage, an area with a release of the tension built up by the sort of insistent rhythmic feeling of the music. This may contribute to the feeling of repression, or just may be the perfect depiction of depression.

jiguma said 1082 days ago
excellent!
Hey Jim, Bruce Cockburn is one of my favourites, and I guess in a way I had
him in mind when putting this together - especially the first few bars. When I
was writing the lyrics for this, I had had some contact with some very
depressed kids at work, and it seemed at the time that redemption was
unlikely in the short term - I kind of thought that the refrain section (put in to
try to offer some reminder that support was available) was a bit more upbeat,
but now that I re-listen, I realise it did little to lighten things up. I guess
depression is a bit of a never ending battle for some.
Thanks for the comment and the listen.

That's SOME Painting
And the acrylic Cover Art, as well.

Those mysterious, nearly inscrutible vocals. Fully intelligable, yet
distant.

Fabulous percussion and the, if I dare, USUAL Superb Level of
Orchestration.

Bad Topic, for me. Extremely well written (from one who knows that
place all too well).

Best regards,
Cooper

Thanks Cooper, glad you dropped by for a listen. Thanks for the email,
appreciated your point of view - the acrylic sure is brilliant.

Classic Jiguma
I don't have a hall pass to be back here at MJS yet so I will attempt to
make it short and sweet, Neil...

Uh umm GOOD! And always, there's nothing canned about this yummy
bowl of soup...

Thank! again, mister - Dion

Macaudion said 1083 days ago
I wish that I knew how to just drop a few words and move on...
But it's not that easy when it's this good, Neil. This is so damn good
and tasty that it almost makes me feel guilty for grabbing such big ear
fulls and then filling my doggie bag for the trip home....

Hey Dion, I was wondering when you were going to appear! Thanks for the
visit and the comments - I've made a note to get to your new posts when I
can get away from writing my new one, which is getting really frustrating.
This songwriting can be really addictive. Don't know that you got to the
zitified version of "Eggshell Walk", but that was probably the best yet - this
one kind of pales in comparison, but I'm hoping the one in the works will be a
smoker. I guess you've been busy with work and such. Have a brilliant, safe
and happy Christmas - we'll be down the beach eating prawns and oysters
and drinking champagne!
Cheers,
Neil

special contour
You sing it! Cool sound. Is that real or software vox doubling? The beat
goes on... Nice song. It waxes my floor and straightens the pictures on
my wall. My plants will last a day longer without water. Mellow rant.

jiguma said 1082 days ago
special contour
Thanks Richard - the doubling is just a mixture of panning and slightle
delaying each doubled track. I sent the delayed higher vox to the left I think
and the delayed lower one to the right. Ended up kind of wierd! I've been
listening to Peter Greenstone's CD a lot lately, and that is my only excuse!
Glad you dropped in,
Neil

Very nice Neil
This has a great full sound...you've got to love that Logic! I like the
various vocal parts you have going here, they come together well. The
percussion is a nice touch too
A very distinctive style!

Very nice Neil
Cheers Steve, I was impressed with the difference Logic made to your most
recent song also. It seems so many steps ahead of GB to me, even though it
seems to have much the same plugins (to a point) - its just the increased
dynamics I really like. Thanks for stopping by,
Neil

This sucks you in from the first note. Very unique, very cool. What are your influences? This is nice, but smacks of so many different styles it makes my head spin! Great performance.

jiguma said 777 days ago
Influences?
Thanks for the comment way back then Josh! I have in a bio somewhere that
my influences include "most bands starting with B", and while this is not
strictly true, there are lots of "B" bands: The Band, Beatles, Beach Boys, Bowie,
Bruce Cockburn (well, Bruce starts with a B!), Byrds, Blue Nile, Jack Bruce, etc.
Then there's Neil Finn, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Them, Yes, Gentle
Giant, Genesis, Gabriel, and the list goes on. I write songs as they come, and
I am most strongly influenced in how they sound by the tools I have available
and (mostly) by my "different" voice.
Cheers,
Neil

Terrifc jig

Love the dreamy feel to this.

This is terrific jig, radio ready. I hear a little Lennon - dreamy feel. Like
imagine etc. Like those beats as well as the cow bell!

Thanks for sharing this gem

Husky Smoky Dreamland
The tension in this song is unbelievable, musically it's tight as a lid on a jar of preserves - totally got into the lyrics and what seems like a very narrow passageway stylistically. I needed to stretch after listening - nice blend of content and character.

your phased vocals. Very Pink-Floyd-ish. Insistant acoustic guitar is very
nice and emotively persuasive. Good lyrics. Just enigmatic enough to have
the ring of poetic truth. Bass work impressive as usual. Bravo.
