Description This one was posted a few weeks ago, and, although I was happy with how it turned out, it seemed to have somewhere else to go. When ziti agreed to play what I expected to be a straight lead break, I thought that might help. Little did I know that Fran would take the song by the scruff of the neck and in the process, take it somewhere else altogether! For me, this has been a rare insight into the impact that a seriously skilled player can have on a simple song. Fran plays 5 guitar tracks here – listen for the held note in the intro, the sirens in verse 2 and the intensity of the solo. I am so proud of how this has turned out.

Play this at that volume just short of your ears starting to bleed!
Lyrics The Eggshell Walk
© 11/2005 Neil Porter

We lie awake at daybreak
And you ask me how the world gets on outside
Another shattered marketplace
Another scattered day of broken lives

Chorus
I’m scared to turn the news on
In the morning
Don’t know what might happen
In my sleep
They’ve got you and me
Doing the Eggshell Walk
Doesn’t seem like
Freedom much to me

Streets of Paris burning
Someone else’s city, could be yours
A signal of frustration
With the growing gap dividing rich and poor

Chorus
I’m scared to turn the news on
In the morning
Don’t know what might happen
In my sleep
They’ve got you and me
Doing the Eggshell Walk
Doesn’t seem like
Freedom much to me

They send ‘em home in body bags
2000 already, there’ll be more
We don’t count the other side
30,000 people, that’s the score

Chorus
Getting scared to wake up
In the morning
Anything could happen
In my sleep
They’ve got you and me
Doing the Eggshell Walk
Doesn’t seem like
Freedom much to me

Refrain
You put one foot forward
And you look around
You shade your eyes
And you test the ground
You jump at shadows
And you shy at sounds
If you wonder why you’re dancing
You’re doing the Eggshell Walk

Chorus
Starting to get angry
In the morning
Starting to have nightmares
In my sleep
They’ve got you and me
Doing the Eggshell Walk
Seems like an unholy mess to me

SEDITION
TERRORIST
SHOOT TO KILL
DETENTION CENTRE

Let’s think about it!

BALI
IRAQ
SUICIDE BOMBER
XENOPHOBIA

Just think about it

ziti strikes again!
Yum! Liquid lightning guitar...I liked this a lot before, and Fran has enhanced this greatly. Also it seems yet another side of ziti playing, this being less blues and more progressive rock. Good job all around.

I like the little coda on the end, interesting sound collage!

Cool version
This is a great tune. Nice additions ziti! Those leads add just the right colors to the song.

It was already
Near perfect. This is still a damn fine song and Ziti's only adds more
flavor... Terrific song in every way. There really isn't much more I can add
other than I absolutely love this song!

thoughts from the bull...
i agree with Jim - the guitar work is terrific.

i really like the vocals... refreshingly new and unique.

most often, i don't fare well with political tunes, but this one doesn't
hit you in the face with the issue(s). instead, it has so many interesting
components, that the lyrics easily flow within the piece.

great job!

Ejh said 1100 days ago
If Bowie and Pink Floyd collab'd....
...on a political song... it might end up something like this...

Being from the Boston area, I've had to endure some pretty miserable
"political" and "message" and "protest" songs, where even, or more
often, ESPECIALLY if I agreed with the person's point of view, I would be
cringing at the annoying, banal platitudes and the "my-message-is-a-
good-one-therefore-anything-I-do-with-this-message-must-be-
brilliant-art" attitudes...

So, I was almost scared to listen to this one...Being a jiguma fan, I
didn't want to have to quietly slink away...

No worries, however... this is a nicely done song...

Change-up on the usual Neil vocal sound. Not radically different, but
different. Suits the song well. Guitars are great. Must be the new mic.
Haven't heard that name before...Rode...aren't they made....somewhere
in the Southern hemisphere?...

I like the song itself, and the lyrics work well into the groove of the
music. Ziti's touches are deft and painterly; they don't 'make' the song,
'cause the song was already happening already (already), but they do
bring some color and ornamentation to the party that adds to the total
effect, suits the theme, ties things together, moves the song along, and
just generally sounds awesome...

I, too, like the coda...

Awesome
Everything I said about the origonal version stilll stands. This is a
powerful song no matter how it's done. Ziti has given it a wonderfully new
spin. Well done to you both Neil and Ziti.

I get a Pet Shop Boy feel during this song. I love the voice effects..........

Exciting
Exciting ... when two of my musical heros join to make something
together ... will it work?

This did!
Splendidly!

A strong testimony of an existential trauma for many in civilised world
right now. You have depicted so well feelings also I have here in
northern Europe ... for example of being nervous of turning the radio
on in the morning.

And Zitis masterly illustrations makes it even stronger!

Great job alltogether! It can impossible be passed-by unnoticeable.

Neil,
This tune had another face.
The guitar of ziti barks hard.
Cooperation with you ziti is wonderful.
The effect of the end is excellent.

seriously impactful
Men, this is good stuff. Thoughtful lyrics clearly delivered, flanked by
sympathetic instruments. A rally cry. "Anything can happen in my
sleep". So true. Seems like we're all asleep at the wheel, careening out
of control. What's wrong with humanity?

ziti said 1100 days ago
well, neil
i really love this song. I, too have avoided poitical music over the
years. I checked this tune out at first just cuz of the damn TITLE!

but I fell in love with the song immediatley....it expresses what we all
feel nowadays.

I am proud of my contribution here, I had a BLAST playing this!!...oooh
maybe that wasn't the best choice of words....

PEACE!!

Very timely and well-done. I didn't hear the other version, but this is the complete package, nice job!

jiguma said 1100 days ago
Thanks for listening!
I really appreciate the kind words above, but just don't have time to
respond to each individually - I'm "flat out like a lizard drinking"(as we
say) at work at the moment! : )

I'd really like to thank Fran for his work on this - I've played with some
very good guitarists, but his musical response to this song just blew
me away (whoops, there's that metaphor again!). And, he was so easy
to work with.

I forgot to mention that in the process of reworking the song, I
removed four of my own guitar tracks and redid the vox - on my
AUSTRALIAN made Rode NT3 mic Ed (a wonderful piece of equipment)!
Also added some cymbal crashes and lifted the drums generally.

Thanks again for having a listen - its hard not to get paranoid these
days, but we do still have control of how we personally deal with those
around us, and that can make a difference!

Peace!!

great musical texture
super lyrics, nice singing, awesome song structure/chords & idea,
keeps everything off-kilter, super orchestration & guitar playing. Id
like more anxiety in the voice of the refrain to match the mood, it was
just read lines. This sounds much like something Pink Floyd would do,
with the mix of guitar, song, ambient sounds, and spoken word...
though not their style of message. Love the poingancy of happy-kid
sounds at the end to drive home the urgency of your point. The mix
sounds a little funny to me, like the bass & treble need boosting,
sounds a little like its played through a telephone. But those are
minor... overall this sounds like the makings for a BLOCKBUSTER song,
this has major hit written all over it... at least in my brain. Great stuff
here!

Pink Floyd Lyrics me thinks%u2026
Some people would say they like the Eric Clapton Guitar but I think its a little more Phil Manzanera from Roxy music and don%u2019t mistake it with Dire Straits.

Pink Floyd Lyrics me thinks%u2026
There was a little Eno in there also, right?

The words are very compelling, I'm very moved by them. This is a great song! Your singing is wonderful! Ziti's guitar is very lyrical. Less blues licky and more melodic, but never losing intensity. Great job!

Shades of Bowie and Belew here. It made me want to go out and buy an electric guitar and an Australian mike!

This song's time
up on the little chart is coming to a close....I want to say Thanks to all
those who listened and commented. 25 downloads as I type
this...that's a wonderful compliment.

Neil's song struck a deep chord within me and these guitar parts came
very naturally. It's a different style for me...Neil's oddball chord
voicings are sooo cool...and I am as proud of this song as i am of any I
have been on. Thank you Neil for this little treasure I will have forever.

Afraid to turn on the TV
Yeah its getting like that for me too... but I do anyway and find out that
John Howards passed the VSU (volluntary student unionism, means that
only students that can afford university services are allowed to use
them) and once again rejected the Kyoto Protocall. I'm not paranoid
yet... I'm just having a growing desire to live somewhere else unless
the govt changes to someone thats actually trying to look after the
people that need the most help.

But yeah, struck a chord with me this song did. Also something about
the sound of the vocals (and of course the accent) just helps me hear
an Australian sound about the song as a whole. I really like the mix
and the nice and simple song structure. Ziti's playing is also pretty
damn cool.

The childrens voices were interesting in the coda. When you said
detention center I expected to hear clips from that nighttime footage
of Woomera Detention Center or something... but instead you had
children going "nah nah nahnah nah" which does sound pretty sinister
in this context which is cool. Didn't know what to think when they just
started laughing... didn't quite fit for me... didn't have the same feel or
something...

Anyway, fantastic work... its just a shame theres so much material to
work with these days...

Afraid to turn on the TV
Thanks for taking the time with this Bryan! I suspect there's a song in the
Cronulla riots too (my old stomping ground). I probably have a few decades
on you, but it still really pains me to see the changes to the student union
situation - not to mention the mess we've ended up in thanks to the Howard
government (although in my darker moments I wonder whether a Labour
government would have done any better!). I have a few songs in the pot, only
one of which is light-hearted (and thats the one I'm having trouble finishing!)
- a sign of the times.
Take care!
