Description A letter from a friend in the local newspaper started me thinking about how to write about where we were being taken by our government in its ongoing campaign to reduce the rights of Australians. Recent changes to industrial relations legislation and planned “homeland security” changes have bothered me deeply.

This song is a response to a story in our local paper about our federal government’s decision to put an 8-foot fence around our local airport (top, centre of picture above), blocking the beautiful outlook onto lake and bushland, and creating a local image of “fortress Australia”. I’m sure most terrorists know where to get a working pair of wire cutters!
In a broader view it is also in response to our prime minister blindly following George Bush into Iraq and the resulting threats to our nationals at home and abroad. Today I heard the news of more bombings in Bali, and more Australians (and others) killed in horrific circumstances.

This is in my usual style. Guitars, bass and drums. Thanks to Boris The Bull for his suggested title change!!!!
Lyrics Homeland Insecurity
© Neil Porter 1/10/2005

I read your letter yesterday
Your message brought me down
They’re fencing off the airport in our town
They cite “homeland security”
We’ve heard it all before
The politicians tell us “this is war”

George is playing cowboy games
Throwing rocks and calling names
I wonder where we’d be if he’d stayed home
Johnny wants to be the same
Put us on the stage again
Little man with big ideas gone wrong

Consider momentarily
Their arguments for war
They’re really just excuses, nothing more
They’ve changed the course of history
On that we’d all agree
Someone had to vote for them - Not me

Escalation is the game
You hurt me - I’ll do the same
Round and round and round and round again
Egocentric little men
Round and round and round again
Different sides, they’re all the same, oh boy!

They brought this war to paradise
And that I can’t forgive
They brought it to my family and where we live
They’re exporting “democracy”
And which of us could know
By exporting democracy we lose it at home

George is playing cowboy games
Throwing rocks and calling names
I wonder where we’d be if he’d stayed home
Johnny wants to be the same
Put us on the stage again
Little man with big ideas gone wrong

Excellent
This is a beautiful song; I love your singing and guitar playing, very smooth and full of gorgeous harmony. Of course, I think the sentiment is right on target and I like the fact that such a good song can carry such important messages. "They brought this war to paradise" indeed; the cradle of civilization, the Garden of Eden. This is a gem, thank you!

Cheers pv. Thanks for listening and commenting - the whole political stage
at the moment is extremely distressing. Good to be able to sing about it, but
not sure that will make enough of a difference. Appreciate your comments.

usual style? Nothing wrong with that..
when it is such a cool style to have! Good lyrics...I certainly agree that
we are living in an age where the 'politics of fear' has taken hold again.
I hate that phrase 'war on terror'.. it certainly doesn't seem to be having
any effect on actual terrorism.. as we have sadly witnessed with
another Bali attack. anyway enough ranting! Another fine song you
have here.

usual style? Nothing wrong with that..
Thanks Steve, really appreciate your comments as usual. This one was a
difficult set of lyrics to write because there is really so much to say about the
mess we're in that it's hard to fit even a basic idea into a song. The local
airport thing really got my back up though, and I worked out from there.
"When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn" seems to be the
appropriate quote here! Cheers, Neil.

You have no idea how it pains me...
...that the insanity currently being experienced by this country and this
people are spilling out to our neighbors near and far on this planet,
especially for you good folks down under. This reminded be of the best of
the protest music of the 60s. Lyrically, it's brilliant. You have several lines
that just capture what's gone wrong perfectly. Musically, well, I've liked
your "sound" since I first came across your stuff. It's big and rich and
even when you tackle unpleasant realities, there's still a good vibe coming
through from somewhere.

Thanks for the comments Joseph, I'm glad this resonated with you. It seems
we live in crazy times - unfortunately I can't see them getting less crazy
anytime soon. Neil

Good stuff
Love the song build-up and progression. Great songwriting and very good
lyrics. Always good to hear songs with a message, let alone a good
message.
Very smooth sound and an overall relaxing feel.
i like it a lot.
Great job.

Another great song
with superb lyrics. Neil. you are one of my favorite MacJammers,
always a new original song from you.
Actually liked the very "roomy" reverb on this song and the
bass line is cool man. You voice is really great on this tune and
the doubled vocals are excellent. Absolutely brilliant song.

Cheers

Another great song
Thanks so much for the positive comments Johnny! The sound on this was
done using GB2's Master Track settings - something I have only recently
discovered. By tweaking them, you can get songs to really fill out.

This version of Homeland Security is a beta version - I meant to upload one
I'd added some slide and organ to but somehow mixed them up in iTunes.
On reflection though, this is probably a more appropriate version for the
lyrics, so I'll let it run for a week and see how it goes.

Thanks again Johnny, much appreciated,
Neil

me... great job with them

rest of the music's great - nice peaceful protest!

Nice song, I like the hypnotic "D"- bassline. 70`s come to mind. Very well done! Gets my vote!

Rediculous...
This tune is way too 'deeply cool' to have cowboy george's name
associated w/ it. I am sure that it will serve to increase his ratings too...

Here I was thinking that we had the only silly leader in this world. How
american of me, huh... Maybe we have the biggest silly leaders. There!
We win...

Yep, you've shown your hand again and I will see you this cool tune,
even though you show a winning hand...

I love the lyrics and as usual, it's a mighty a fine presentation by you
and your many works...

Another beautiful job at krafting a riculously fine tune, Jiguma.

Dion

Macaudion said 1156 days ago
Rediculous...
Jiguma, I should mention that this tune sounds a bit more refined and more
polished and tweaked. I like that each insturment is clear and solid and your
vocals even sound more polished on this one.

A best production yet. Very professional indeed.

I hope that you will know this as a complement.

Dion

jiguma said 1156 days ago
Rediculous...
Thanks Dion - again, I really appreciate your comments! The production on
this is the result of me learning a few things about recording (such as getting
the backing levels to fit the vocals rather than the other way around), and also
getting to understand a bit more what I can do with my voice (like keeping it
in tune!). The version I meant to upload had a nice Hammond solo and some
slide on it, but perhaps that would have made it a bit too cluttered.

I suspect we are all getting better at this music thing as we keep writing,
performing and producing our own stuff - and isn't it FUN! Your "ARRIVAL" is
a case in point - that is so good!

Thanks again my friend,
Cheers, Neil

no white picket fences...
very thought-provoking and poetic lyrics...reminds me a bit of Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan...great vocals and guitar playing...thanks for depicting the ironies in today's politics in such a digestible and mellifluous format for the masses...too bad the real politicians have no such talent or insight

jiguma said 1153 days ago
no white picket fences...
Thanks for the comment Mikki. Glad you liked the song - I guess I was
brought up with Dylan and the Cat, although I hadn't thought of them as
influences (played Cat Steven's guitar one night in Greece though - a very
long time ago). I suspect the politicians have other things to do (like wreck
the world)! Peace!

Boris the Bull said 1155 days ago
thoughts from the bull...
this is just awesome. musically you got me right from the opening and
kept me going. vocally, it was like sitting beside a wood stove on a
cold, powerless evening. a reminiscent glow of the band Phish
lurks beneath the surface. not sure if you're even a fan!

with regard to the content, well, i'm fairly sure you aren't alone in your
views. i almost wish you'd titled the song Homeland Insecurity. the state of the nation is desperation these days. it's good to hear
someone produce a piece of music that addresses this without beating
me over the head with the message... the music in this song comes
first, and that's quite clear. the message, while not at all coincidental,
makes it move with casual stealth, not a swiping attack - and i like that
a lot.

great job on this and i really thank you for your recent comments and
for sharing your music. keep the faith, my friend!

uh-oh... i closed that italic... what the? grrr... my apologies! :(

jiguma said 1155 days ago
more thoughts from the bull...
Thanks for the comments Boris. Apart from MJ I haven't heard of PHISH - I
suspect I might become a fan. The sound I get originally developed in my
time with a Sydney band called Marastique, a 5 piece with guitars, bass (me),
flute and congas - we occasionally jammed with drummers, but only rarely.
This developed a different bass style. I'd love to do some more "up" songs,
but my voice isn't really suited - this style is what works for me. The log fire
sounds good - but maybe in 8 months or so (we're heading into summer)!
Cheers,
Neil

Another good one!
With all your strengths in full view...

You're really good with the doubled vocals... you've got a sort of
signature doubled sound at this time... even if sometimes it's 'tripled'...

The other signature sound is the jiguma thumping groove of a bassline
up against some good folk-rock jangle in the guitars... this song
doesn't disappoint in that regard, either...

It's a small thing, but I love when the tambourine comes in at just the
right point...

I love the mix and the arrangement...

Curiously, I don't find anything to fault in the politics, either...

Nice job, Neil!

Ed

jiguma said 1154 days ago
Another good one!
<i>Thanks Ed - those vocals have been up to "pentupled" in the past, but the
2 or 3 parts seems to do it at the moment. I'd love to do a straight folk song
sometime - just "man guitar and microphone". Will see what happens.
Always great to get your comments - thanks for listening, Neil.

jiguma said 1154 days ago
Another good one!
Isn't life strange Ed - I have virtually no experience on tambourine :)

Aaron David said 1154 days ago
Good Blend
It's a good blend of instrumental and lyrics. Also, the lyrics relate to a lot of people which is what music should do. If it relates it lasts longer...

Thanks for listening Aaron - and welcome to MJ.

Dude
General comment first: Your poetic and emotional musical depth combined with your excellent dreamy rolling style is outstanding. If you were to do this professionally, you would quickly develop a cult following.

This song: Excellent dark progression and vocals that speak to you. Great lyrics. Love it.

One thing that I would say, which probably applies to most of your stuff is that if you get a little more experimental with your percussion, add some variety, smashes, changes, you will take this song and the rest of your music to the next level. Also consider occasional fill-ins from an odd unpexpected instrument, violin or organ perhaps - should compliment your style well. 9s,fanned.

Dude
Thanks for the very positive comments Arcifus, glad you like it. I must admit
that I'm running out of drum loops to play with - I have a demo copy of
iDrum which I'm planning to use at some stage. Midi drums are also there
when I have time, but it's hard trying to find time for all the extras I'd like to
do. The version I was going to put up had some organ pieces in it for
variation, although i have a long way to go on keyboards yet. I have a new
one in the works which has a bit more variation in it (some wierd flute/whistle
soloing) - maybe that will be a move in a different direction.
I really appreciate the comments, thanks!! Neil
