its that jiguma sound You've developed a unique sound that your songs is soaked with. Its those great vocal harmonies and guitars that make this so special I guess. Very pleasant to listen to. This has a whirling effect indeed. Very good jiguma:) |

Great travel song... ...and great dance... It is in the tradition of some of Bruce Cockburn's travel-the-world songs, and Loreena McKennitt's as well, but the sound is distinctive and your own. I love the throbby bass against the 12-string, and I can certainly feel that Sufi dervish joy throughout the piece. Nice doubled vocals, too. The lyrics are excellent. This hits me like reading Hemingway's "Moveable Feast"; I'm just THERE...it's vivid, clear and strong... Plus, I like it.... Ed |

Feels like I'm in Istanbul I love the ethnic rhythm and the juxtaposition of tribal and contemporary sounds. Full of dynamism. Your vocals gives it a mellow touch that complements the energy of the instruments. |

What thoddi said There most definitely is a jiguma sound, and it works. I'm tempted to describe it as having "quiet vocals" but that long ago ceased being an issue :) The song art sums up this tune quite nicely, with the contrast of the western style suspension bridge in the background and mosque in the foreground. It's a unique blending of east-west and that's not an easy thing to pull off, but you have. |

Glittering strait Hello, Neil. The guitar of the introduction like the folk song is wonderful. Drums is consistently special. It makes by thinking well. Did you take this photograph at the Bosphorus strait? This is beautiful. |

Hypnotic! I really like the distinctive guitar style that you have...a swirl of acoustic and electric patterns interweaving! The harmony vocals are very nice too...this tune really captures an exotic feeling befitting the lyrics. Very enjoyable listen Steve |

mesmerizing tale I've been inside that charming little mosque on the Ortakoy quay - I can remember the grand chandelier hanging from the cupola of the dome. I'm listening to your song while sitting in a swivel chair - that's as close to the whirling dervishes as I can get. (I certainly could go for a cup of that apple tea!) While this song sounds nothing like traditional Mevlevi music, simply because the instruments are so different, it is inhabitated by its spirit - a modernization, I'd call it. Your lyrics nicely weave together several themes, from being in Istanbul in present time to feeling the weight of its long history at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and its strong tug of memory; from the presence of water (the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn), which is such a big part of the city, to the impact of those incredible buildings, like the Blue Mosque, as well as the sounds of the city, with its music and its 5xdaily muezzin callings. You spin a mesmerizing tale here - thanks for taking me along on the journey. |

Sounds like XTC when they get folky Captured the "dervish" vibe while still keeping in a very western feel. Love the jangly guitars! Pleasing and lazy. |

Makes me want to visit... good writing, good mix of sounds, I can definately hear East and West meshing together, like some surreal dream. I have... no quibbles on production. You did good. |

Very tasty... Yes, another Jiguma 'classic'. I say this, because, all of your tunes seemed destined to be as such... Rich w/ everything ya need to get your groove-on, and content load w/ the timelessness of sustenance. A very nice groove and of course, like the chant- like structure, in creating melody as a whole piece.... I'm always drawn to your vocals, as they seem to some how, reduce whatever level of stress I've tended to indulge in lately. Thanks for that... And, thanks for another 'Deeply Cool' tune, Jiguma. Wheeeeeee! I'm whirling! Actually, I'm reeling, Neil. This is so amazingly good, wonderful music, great lyrics. You make wonderful choices, using great, specific details. It makes your writing so vibrant. My favorite lyric? "The children of Mevlevi spinning mesmerising feet." Your use of assonance here is spot-on, really incredible. Have you ever taken classes in writing poetry? I suspect you have because of your excellent technique. Either you have, or you have a tremendous natural talent, a great ear and ability to translate it into language. I think this is my absolute favorite of yours, until the next one comes along, I suppose. BTW, Is that a portion of a Chagall on the cover art for this? He's my favorite artist. |
