Hey... I'm just an amateur what can I say to really critique something so fine? Ed, this indeed has legs... timeless and poetic lyrics. Heart felt performance by Phyllis and you on vocals. To be added to my library when I get home. The warmth of that analog recording is priceless to this one who has only known GBand. Jack |

I miss hearing the mockingbirds! ...None around here, but I'd hear them every morning when I lived in So. California, tirelessly singing. Lovely song, Ed. So pleasant, calming and joyful. I'm glad you're posting these older tracks. Simply fine. And wow....Relativity. I had their "Gathering Pace" on cassette and about wore it out, I listened to it so much. |

Terrifc This is really nice to hear. Wow, love that electric violin! The fingerpicking is very delicately done. Smooth, nice intro. The singing is sweet indeed! Harmonizing is fun to hear! This is pro stuff! This is a great fine addition to Macjams! Wow! |

Another Espresso, Please... Yes, this tune brings it all back: The scent of strange, sweet spices in the air, the sudden hush as the quiet strains of a plaintive melody gently fill the intimate room... A very fine piece of work, Ed. And very well performed by you and your mates. I'm back in the coffeehouse. ;) |

Beautiful Really soft and nice, well produced! See the song has copyright 1986. Is it also recorded that long ago? You have got a very nice sound to it anyway (sometimes I wonder if it wansnt easier to make good recording on analouge equipment). And that electric fiddle is great, every acoustic band should have one ;) |

Classy folk ballad Very nice tune Ed, great performances all round. The vocals have a mournful Linda Thompson quality. You all sound so English!! This would go down well at the Cambridge Folk Festival...nice one Steve |

so incredibly well-done! What a great song this is -- lovely melody and lyrics, excellent performances and recording quality. Phyllis' voice is perfect for the folk genre; sweet, clear and warm. Gorgeous! The guitar playing is very well-matched and balanced, providing a perfect accompaniment and "punctuation" to this song. I especially like the vocal harmonies -- they're close and nicely rounded, and adds a lot to the whole. The electric fiddle is just the right touch, a special sound which is "icing on the cake". This is a very impressive track on all counts, and is definitely professional caliber. GREAT JOB, ED (and colleagues)!!! |

What a warm embrace... This one warmly embraced me from all places...Grattitude can be universal, more likey though, the beauty in this particular piece is that which is the main chord...It is that chord, of which is resonant w/ the essence of that which is good...Perfect harmony... Every note presented here, they sing along perfectly as if you are all, as one... An excellent, excellent piece, Ed. Again, I am not at all suprised, that you had lots to do w/ this... Thanks for sharing this. Dion/Cyd |

AMAZING SONG! Dr. Shrink you write the most amazing songs! This song is so beautiful! This song gave me the goose bumps and made me cry! There's not many songs that do that to me and this is one of them. I can barely type this because the tears are dripping down my cheek. It reminds of my late father and his great spiri that infected me through his life and in his passing. He was truly a mockingbird and this song moved me immensely. Thank you! |

So well done! Ed, this is really nice. It must be good to have a back-catalogue to draw from - especially when it contains songs like this. Hard to fault this - love the violin, vocals and guitars. Haven't had the pleasure of hearing a mockingbird though, must try to find a mp3 of one somewhere. Trying to imagine a song about a kookaburra sounding so fine! Keep em coming Ed, Neil |

Retro Recording Techniques... In Ed's response to "Beauty"... Ed Quote: "...and I remember sitting over coffee while he marked up the two inch tape with chalk or something and sliced out mistakes with a razor blade..." Just as a historical point of interest for all you younger folk who have never known the "joys" of editing audio tape... what Ed's probably referring to is a "grease" pencil, which was used to mark of the beginning and ending points on the audio tape where editing needed to be done. The tape would then be placed into an editing block, which held the tape in place while a demagnetized single- edged razor blade was used (in a pre-tooled diagonal slot) to uniformly slice the tape at those edit points. Using this crude method, recording engineers were able to excise flubs or imperfect sections of a take and substitute better performances of the same sections from other takes by "splicing" (basically scotch-taping) these replacement parts to the main work tape. As an interesting side note: This is how "loops" were born. Engineers would often take a section of a drummer's performance, carefully edit the section they wanted and then spliced it together in a loop that could then be played on a reel-to-reel tape machine to produce a "perfect," consistent beat ... over and over again. |

Transcends Mr. Ejh, What a wonderful, wonderful song. Really touches the soul. Beautiful singing snd songwriting. All the intruments and composition just propel the lyrics so well. The violin is so expressive. It really sings. Man, just so good. I love the emotion it projects and the emotion I feel when I listen. Thanks so much for putting it up. |

Still Fine Phyllis here. Still speakerless, software-less, earless, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Let me just add that this song is my favorite wedding song to perform, and everybody (including me) cries when they hear it. Kudos to Ejh for a great song, without which the singer might as well be eating a hamburger on tape. Ugh! All those mouth noises!!! ...So, they don't use tape anymore??? And while I'm on the subject of tape, I remember what a joy it was to sing at The Daley Planet, a studio constructed expressly for the purpose of recording acoustic music. Complete with windows and a real baby grand piano. My fondest memory of recording this song is looking out the window of the booth, listening to the most recent take, and catching Johnny Cunningham standing outside with about 5 cigarettes sticking out of his mouth, looking in at us with a mad expression of glee.... |

Legs? This song has wings! Simply phenomenal. Everything is so smooth and mellow! The world needs to hear this song! Thank you for posting it! Growing up in MA, I always heard about Silly Wizard. And I remember the Raindogs because I liked a band called "The Schemers" out of Providence that had Mark Cutler in it. He was in the Raindogs after that band. Wasn't he? I'll have to do my research further. |

Grammar Alert "I wish" indicates the next phrase is in the subjunctive mode, and so, the correct title of this song would be "I Wish I Were a Mockingbird". (I'm re-populating my favorites list after trimming it last winter. :)) |

: ) QUOTE I have no words only tears of GRATITUDE... Tears make room for more JOY that's for sure; )! I*M REAL HAPPY IT's ON A CD for the rest of the World . . . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKYOU MJ You're my boulder:) & THANKYOU BOTH . . she has a Beautiful voice ..... Qouting You here EJH Your pres of this song... ***I wrote the song, but in the studio Phyllis convinced me (wisely) to let her take the lead vocal. This is another gratitude song... It was written years ago about a particular time in my life that a particular friend helped me get through, but through the years it has developed "legs", and has been found fitting in many times and situations, for me and for others. I always think it's the song that has "legs", but maybe it's gratitude that is more universal... It was also inspired by my first encounter with a mockingbird, which was singing on a rooftop near my old apartment. I listened to it change song and voice over and over again, and, since I have always been frustrated with my own voice, I was struck by how cool it would be to be able to go from voice to voice and song to song as the spirit moved you... As with everything I've ever recorded in my life, it sounds better over a good set of headphones... And speaking of gratitude, thanks and a tip of the pith helmet to ziti, who let me run over the other afternoon so he could scan in the old CD cover on his amazing art-and-music rig.... |

This is so beautiful Amazing vocals, both the solo and the harmonies. The instruments blend so well together, it's clear you all had a great musical connection. It doesn't sound "from the archives" at all. I love the mockingbirds around here...they are really inventive little artistes! |

Listening to mockingbirds is one of the wonders of life. Like
little jazz players riffing off of everything they've ever heard.
And love, it makes you want to always sing something new
yet something that uses all those moments again and again.
This captures a wonderful moment. Thanks for giving it legs.
