Keywords ember (28)ambient (485)dark (315)hope (91)drakonis (56)
Description This started 3 years ago as a sketch for a slow dark ambient piece and was almost forgotten. Then a few weeks ago, I found the sketch, fleshed it out it, and posted here originally as Ember . After I got some very helpful feedback on it (especially from MissChaos and Cameron), I heeded their advice by varying the instrumentation a bit, and adding a "torque-flute" in the middle quiet section. This is the result, Ember-Rekindled.

This piece is available for collaboration, and it would certainly benefit from your leads and percussion... if you are interested in remixing this, send me an e-mail and I can send you the GarageBand 2 file to work from. Just mention my piece when you post your remix, and send me an e-mail so I can listen to and comment on your creation! And even if you don't wish to embellish it, please drop me a comment here and tell me what you like or don't like about it!
Hardware Dual 1GHz G4, warm Summer night at the beach.
Software: I wrote and scored this note-by-note on "Harmony Assistant" composition software, then MIDI-ported it to GarageBand 2 & chose new instruments & EQed. I created the "Rekindled Burning Coal" artwork with the freeware POV-Ray 3D raytracer (http://mac.povray.org). NOTE: The artwork embedded in the MP3 (Download & click on it in iTunes) is higher quality than what you see here.

the quieter section is a great addition. Brings you down
just enough to come up again.

Ooooh...
....I'd love to hear some of our lovely lady-type MacJammers
record some vocals over this. It is beautiful and dreamy. Very
nice.

Joanna said 1184 days ago
Well done, Drak!
You've made a beautiful soundscape here. Slimmie's
vocals would be amazing on it, even though it stands
alone quite well. I do like the softer section. Gives it more
texture.

Moodilicious
this has a nice, calming warmness to it. The bells are a nice touch. I am eager to hear this piece progressw/ Slimmie's vocals. Wonderful work!

deputydoofy said 1183 days ago
Yes, Drak.
This is definitely my style. Love the dark, haunting, ambient sounds. A fan am I.

Moody
I like the mood of this. I feel like I should be watching
one of those IMAX films about the universe or
something...with the narration..."billions of years ago..."
etc. That's not a negative...just a endorsement of the
professional feel of this tune. Good stuff.

perceptualvortex said 1183 days ago
Yup
moody. I especially like when it goes quieter... sounds to me like a very old forest. The bigger brighter parts are like dramatic, liquidy sunbeams. Kind of Tangerine Dreamy, less robotic though. Very nice.

Cameron said 1183 days ago
getting better!
Drak, you have definitely improved this piece; the middle
section is now more interesting with the torque-flute
sound.

But I still would like to hear this piece a bit slower. There's
just something unsettling about this tempo, for me
anyway. I found myself breathing a little fast while
listening.

Actually, the current tempo would be good if there were
some sort of vocals added over the top to offset it -- this
does have Slimmie written all over it.....(hint-hint!)

But if you keep it as an instrumental, I would suggest
slowing down the tempo several notches and see how it
sounds and feels to you. The music itself seems rather
meditative to me, but the "pulse" of it is a bit fast for
meditation or kicking back.

I think that the most important question that you need to
ask yourself is, what kind of mood, emotion or effect do
you want to achieve with this piece? If you want a "slow
dark ambient" piece as you mentioned earlier, it needs to
have a more deliberate pulse. This would enhance that
"dark" feeling you may be going for.

The best of luck to you with this ongoing project. You're
making good progress!

drakonis said 1179 days ago
getting better!
Hi Cameron,
As usual, you have valuably perceptive critiques... I've just tried slowing this new
version down from 80 back to 70 BPM, and it *does* sound more relaxed, less
rushed. I'm tightening up the torque-flute a bit (letting her breathe between
notes), and this is sounding even better. Argh, I thought I was done with this for
a bit, but it is heating up again and getting exciting! Thank you for your
thoughtful comments, off to work the bellows...

the new additions fit perfectly. the thing is-this is such a nice
soundbed, you could lay all kinds of things over it. keep
stoking it!

I have only one complaint...
The song ended! Seriously, consider an EXTENDED version. This was taking me places, dude! Seldom does a song really reach these heights, but this one did! I was impressed that you said you scored this yourself. Great job! There isn't anything this song needs. It's perfect.

yes...ember needed...it's amazing that you did this note by note...very impressive...you have a great acoustic vision--that is, the ability to translate notes into actual sounds that are so convincing and effective in creating the intended atmosphere...and on top of that, your hardware was a "warm Summer night at the beach"?! wow, great imagination and creativity

Pleasant sounding and has a beautiful laid back feeling. A
nice relaxing tune. As a solemn sound. Like the way it builds
in places. Almost reminds me of water-in-glass sounds.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece!

Dark
I love how dark this is. I would love to take it on as a collab. ! I especially like the way it progresses and grows and grows. Nice production and good overall sound. I have a few idea's for vocals, that is if you are still interested in a collab. with this piece. It is a very interesting song, and would be fun to make additions to. The crescendo's (or however it is that you spell that) are magnificent and really play to emotion. Lovely!

Very Nice
I love how moody it is. It's dark yet whimsical at the same time. I've
listened to it a few times now and I love how it builds towards the end.
This sounds like it would be a great addition to a soundtrack. I'm
reminded of Lord Of The Rings. It has real feeling to it. I enjoyed it very
much. I've givin you high scores on this one BTW. It's very deserving of it.
Very good arrangement and mixing as well.

Very Nice
I'm very glad that you hear the moodiness, the depth, but also the whimsy (or at
least a smirk) in this... I think all my music, no matter how foreboding and
relentless, will always have a spark of hope and light. I did work long hours on
this (for a month) to get the sounds, texture, and levels right. Anyway, thanks
for checking it out, and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff here on
Macjams... maybe you want to take Ember for your own spin around the block?
Let me know if you want to do your own remix.

Intriguing and mysterious
... I can understand why so many people have developed it (that must be very satisfying for you and a lot of fun too). It's very evocative, generating all kinds of images in my head (or maybe that's the OTC cold remedy ha ha!) But seriously, it really does insinuate its way deep into the psyche with that stretchy and sinuous melody.

Of course if I ever have a go at this it'll sound like a morris dance tune...

KK

drakonis said 721 days ago
Hehehe.. Morris Dance...
That would be a wonderful direction, actually... and I am still waiting for you to rosin your bow on this and take it for a spin. Actually, I have a newer one... if you're interested, drop me a note and I'll e-mail it to you.

This does seem to have some magic golden chord ratio or something, doesn't it?

I like it. Truly simple, very smooth and streamlined. Made me think of dark colors, moving in a way kind of like the northern lights. Your picture didn't seem to fit, though, it looks kind of rigid while this piece is flowing and polished.

drakonis said 719 days ago
Thanks Dave!
Glad this tickled some synapses! This is indeed rather fluid, like the shifting plasma on embers, and the original artwork (which I had for version #1 of Ember) can still be seen in the rigid picture frame in this version #2 artwork... but I agree, they don't mesh as well. You know, *you* could probably do some wild reconstructive remix wiring to Ember... send me a note if interested in making an Obstructive Ember, I'll send you a GB file to dissect :-)

Here by your invite.
This is definitely a nice moody piece. It could go either eerily soft, or it could be reinterpreted with some ultra-harsh sounding detuned fuzz guitar and industrial percussion. This would be an interesting piece to experiment with dynamics on. Yeah I'd like to do it. I probably won't get it done any time soon, but it'd be a nice fun thing to work on over the next couple of months.

This piece has come to my attention. Beautiful piece of music - great writing and orchestration. I've taken up the challenge and I'm in the process of reshaping this fine composition into something "other". Thanks for the opportunity to do something different - and for sharing the files.

What a delight! I love "other" directions for this, and I anxiously await your creation/re-interpretation!

Thank you for the compliments on this piece... it does seem to have a deeply satisfying chord progression, and I had fun long ago with the synthy sounds, breaking away from my orchestral roots.

I've been aware of this song and it various renderings but I don't recall ever taking the time to listen to the original.
Wow- gotta say it's something else! The slower, more sparse section about half-way through just blew me away.

This is really cool, Drak. I'm sorry I didn't "discover" it for myself sooner.

Haunting, sends chills up the spine. What a brilliantly fine piece it is. It reminds me of Eluvium without the piano. I enjoy the smooth and gradual transition of this song and the instrumentation you have chosen. What a delight that this song has reached so many ears and was not forgotten.

Now I have another piece of music to go look up, thank you! I love it when I get homework assignments!

Very glad you stopped in and listened, and I am happy to hear that the music and instrumentation choice gives you chills... I take that as a high compliment.
