Description While I work on some more acoustic folk rock sorts of things, including some collabs and some postings from ye anciente archives, I thought it might be fun to do a change-up and post something folks might not expect from me...

This was the very first thing I did when I got my BR-8... I was scared to use it at first, and one night I just said to myself, "Gotta get past this, reading the manual again isn't making music, just lay something down and mess with it..."

So I did. I put down this chord progression in B minor over a few variations on a rock and roll drum thing, then added more guitars with clean chording, distorted chording, and then went way out on the edge of what was then my ability and let myself make noise on the electric guitar... added "bass simulation" with the electric, then doubled it with real bass... With the exception of the second bass, the whole thing took less than forty-five minutes, I think, which is unheard of for me...

It's very rough. There are bum notes, wrong chords, there is straying time, there are pick harmonics that are intentional and there are pick harmonics that are accidents... it's not all crisp and clear... it was really never intended to be anything more than a "learn-the-machine" piece. But for some reason I have grown to really like it, so I'm sharing it with the MacJams crew...

Reminds me of some of the old Stills-Young guitar duels. In this case, it's me dueling with my ability...

Thanks to Curry for encouraging me to post this, and suggesting (it may happen!) that this could be a song...

Can you believe it, ziti thinks I should repaint my Charvette....

Ed
Lyrics None...
Hardware As noted, my lovely BR-8, making pretty much all noises...Which includes all guitar effects, bass effects, bass simulator, drum-like rhythm section...

Compressed at some point with the FNR Really Nice Compressor...

Lovely red (if you can call that color red) Charvette electric guitar

Ancient Stinger bass

Software: BR-8 tracks mix/mastered in GarageBand 2

Jammin!
Woohoo, now you've done it... I don't wanna hear no more
whinin' about how much of a guitar hack you are... I see
why you like this... I'm guessing there will be a lot of other
people who like it a great deal. It is simple, catchy,
driving, and enjoyable to listen to. Brings me back to the
old days, watching my best friend disappear into that
special loving place with his Les Paul... he would be gone
for 10 minutes jamming like this, the music would be
mysteriously captivating, then we'd all snap out of it and
wonder what happened. Great job in bringin' 'em back.
Sigh.
ttfn,
Drakonis, waxing nostalgic

Jammin!
Yeah, drakonis, that's how I learned to play guitar... I had a friend that I could
jam with for hours... we'd do this thing we called "chasing our tails", where we
each were trying to follow the other... prob'ly bad to the innocent onlooker,
but magic to participate in...

One of my standards in this departments is or are the 'Madge' jams from
Fleetwood Mac in the Peter Green/Danny Kirwan era....

I'm really glad you liked it, and signed on early with an encouraging
comment. Absolutely made my day when I "peeked" from work to see if the
song was up yet...

Thanks and thanks and thanks again,

Drive real fast...
You win! no matter what you do...If I had a red covertable 1950's something, I'd drive highway 101 on the coast here, and I'd drive real fast... And then, much later down the roard, I'd pull over and park somewhere near the the sunset, just to look at my cool car, setting in the sun...

I totally dug this piece. Usually, no scenes come to mine while listening, but for some reason, this one created a fully moving picture as described above.

You are good on the g'tar. You've holding back and practicing restrain, big time.

Thanks for coming to terms with how cool this tune is....

Drive real fast...
All right, Cyd, I will admit this:

I was sitting around last night, wanting to come up with some hip title that
would sound better than 'Bm Jam', the working title on the first Zip disc...

The lead contender, with apologies to The Artist, was:

"Little Red Charvette"

Great minds run to the same red guitar references, I guess...

I'm glad you enjoyed this... your own stuff is so tight and well planned and
mixed and everything, that I didn't know if you would find a place for this one
in your musical cosmos...

I'm ridiculously glad that you did...

Thanks for listening, and as always for the encouragement...

Okay Ed, Now here is where a ridiculous nature lurks about...

Some would say that the universe is all a big plan and everthing is known by the planner his/her/ or it's self...

Some would say, that everything is the result of happenstance, and that things just happen...

Somewhere within either of these theories, you and I, we get to enjoy the results of either, regardless of the hows and whys of what has been laid out...We get to like what we like, just because we do...

I love what you do w/ music...Cyd

Master of Your Domain
Wow Ejh, this is really good for just learning your new toy.
You should write more songs on the electric. Is that an iMac
G5 in your picture? I want one of those babys. Very nice
improv piece. You should be the master of your domain in
no time. I like the rawness of this unpolished reocrding bum
notes and all!

Ejh said 1189 days ago
Master of Your Domain
Well, thanks for your appreciation. My new iMac G5 is one of the reasons I
discovered MacJams and started using GarageBand... It's awesome...

I'm glad you liked the raw sound on this 'jam'...

Thanks for listening and commenting...

Oh yeah
I really dig this solo! The 'mistakes' just add character, soul to it... I'll take this over Yngwie any time. That's some fine talent you have there, Ed! By the way DO NOT repaint that beautiful Charvette!!

Ejh said 1189 days ago
Oh yeah
Glad you found some character and soul in it, perceptual... I, too, would take a
little grit over Mr. Malmsteen...

Thanks for listening and commenting. i do appreciate it.

Man this is really nice, very nice phrasing. You have a tasty touch. Good subtle technique. Really cool. Great guitar Ejh. I think the rough feel adds character. The rhythm guitar is very tasty and clean.

Ejh said 1188 days ago
Chop city
Mr. oop, I appreciate the kind words and appreciative assessment. I agree
that the roughness kind of helps this piece, this recording... I'm glad you like
the phrasing and the rhythm guitar... I actually think I'm a pretty good rhythm
guitarist, as these things go, but it doesn't always get noticed...

It's funny hearing you use the word 'subtle', though... I don't think of my
playing as subtle, especially my electric playing... I'll have to relisten with an
ear to sublety and see where it's to be found...

Thanks for listening well and commenting thoughtfully,

Maybe I wasn't clear, bizarre.

This is taken from the 45 rpm single edit.

The extended live album version is the one true fans seek out...

Let 'er wail!
I once worked with a guy who would back up anyone on
guitar for week-end gigs. He was fabulous. Occasionally,
we would get together and jam, and of course he then
seemed like any ordinary mortal on his Les Paul. So I
asked him why he was less than spectacular when we
played together but brilliant in the clubs. He said, and I
quote, "Playing guitar is living. Everything else is just
waiting".

Ed, this is great playing! You are obviously 'living' with
this one. Nice chord progression with a lead part that
flows right into the rhythm. And I like the presence of the
track - very live. Superbly spontaneous!

And I would leave the Charvette colour as is!

TeeTee

Ejh said 1188 days ago
Let 'er wail!
Great story, TeeTee, and a real nice comment. "Living" the tune sounds real
good... and I think that part's true... whatever the limitations of my playing,
while I was playing it I didn't feel limited at all... I felt very much alive...

I think that's why, despite its flaws, this track feels really alive to me, and I
like
listening to it, especially in the car...

And score another vote for the Charvette and its suchness...

Thanks for a very nice listen and comment, and thanks again for the tip re:
the MBox... I think it will bear fruit soon...

what a different style
You are full of surprises.

I didn't even know you owned an electric guitar.
Nice, like those thumps going up the fret, nice fuzz.

Cool layering, like those chunka, chunka clean guitar
rhythms on the electrc guitar.

Good going

Ejh said 1189 days ago

Thanks, tiler. Don't you like to change up from time to time?

I'm glad you enjoyed it... I do indeed have an electric guitar... The Charvette is
an amazing instrument for $134 dollars years ago...

Hey, your new collab is coming around on my iTunes... Gotta harness your
powers as an accompanist...

Thanks for listening and commenting...

Ed, I'm SHOCKED!
I didn't know you had this secret internal rocker! This is
awesome and I'd love to see you do more stuff like this as
well as the folk rock.

I wish I could say something intelligent about this, but the
guitar playing is astonishingly good, you're really feeling
the music and I'm kind of blown away here.

You've gone electric!

Ejh said 1188 days ago
Ed, I'm SHOCKED!
Thank you, ledebutant... I didn't know if you would care for this...

Not exactly the sensitive singer songwriter thing happening here...

I'm very happy that you like it, though, and I fully intend to do more like this,
or
songs that have this sort of playing... the stumbling point for me is that next
time I was to be able to do better things with the drums and bass... I'm slowly
develolping my ability to program some drums and bass that will sound a
little
better...

Glad you got the feel of this, I really am...

And as always, thanks for listening and responding...

Ed

And your latest song is STILL stunning!

This is the first time, I've listened to your music. Nice
playing and mix. I would like to hear a little faster tempo,
but all in all well done. I'll check out some of your others.
Enjoyed your jam.-JAC

Thanks, chakeres, I appreciate you taking the time to check this out, and of
course I'll be very pleased if you check out some of the others as well...

I'm glad you like it.

Good guitar jam groove!
Nice playing Ejh, this works well as a jam track...if you
wanted to develop it you could bring in another guitar
part with a different tone to create a 'conversation'
between the two. I like the playing on this though, it has a
great feel. Nice one
Steve

Ejh said 1188 days ago
Good guitar jam groove!
steve, I love your playing, especially some of those recent instrumentals, so
I'm
tickled that you like this...

I did at one point try to go back on a free track and add something, try to do
fills
and trades, but it just never had the feel, so I let it be what it was...

I know what you mean, though, and I like "guitar conversations" very much...
Long ago, one of my roommates who encouraged me to learn guitar used to
sit me down and make me identify "Which one is Stills...Which one is Young...
Which one is Eric, which one is Duane... Which one is Dickie, which one is
Duane...Which is the Strat, which the Les Paul..." It was great ear training...

Thanks for listening...

I'm with ziti!
Ed,
That Charvette sounds great, but not something you could
call subtle in the looks department (then I guess it's
unlikely anyone would get away with stealing it).

Seriously Ed, I'm surprised and pleased that you have an
inner rocker, but then again I guess we all have. I hear a
song in this, and like drakonis, I hear friends off in the
ether when I was much younger, wondering how much
longer I had to keep up the bass lines before they came
back to earth.

Look forward to hearing more uptempo stuff from you in
the future. Any time you need help on bass . . . . .

Cheers,
Neil

Ejh said 1188 days ago
I'm with ziti!
There's that word, 'subtle' again.

Yeah, I sometimes imagine myself with a nice custom-made Carvin guitar,
one
of those ones with beautiful hardwoods and a satin finish... brass all over the
place... And somehow I have this relationship with this very lovely to play
Charvette that is a color probably not found in nature...

It really is phenomenally nice to play...

And yes, sometimes I hear that song that this might possibly be, lurking in its
B minor-hood...

And I definitely know about keeping a chord progression going while
someone else solos and goes elsewhere, as well as being grateful when I'm
the one that gets to go somewhere...

So, yes, I relate to everything you're writing...

I am just learning how to do the mechanics and logistics of collaboration... I'd
love to come up with something you'd play bass on... if you're serious...

As I noted above, I'm learning to program bass, which so far means
programming the tonic under each chord, but I love nice bass playing...

Thanks for the listen and the comment....

Ed

"Electronica" but I sure appreciate a good rockin jam! And

Awesome, Mhz, I'm glad you appreciated it. One of the things that I'm loving on

You know...
if I had a really nice Charvel guitar I still couldn't make it sing
like this. I think you should pursue this further and see what
happens. Keep the imperfections, man... it gives the tune so
much extra character!

It would be fun to play with it, see if something could happen...

something...

I would really like to do some more like this, and I'm working on some slightly more polished jam-style material... I'm not a virtuoso guitar player, but it's fun to play this kind of thing from time to time anyway...

I would love to do a collaboration with jiguma and Cori... Gotta come up with a piece we can all relate to... I'll see what I can do... Those are two of my favorite MacJams people... as people and as musicians...

Great Jam Ed
Reminds me of so many nights playing out, when you get in a groove and the crowd is up and rockin' and you just keep tryin' to beat them back into their seats. No matter what you do at this stage, they are into it, so you end up with bloody fingers and in a state of total euphoria from the feedback you get form the crowd.

This is that kind of a jam man.

Awesome one Ed
