Description A fun project this was!

This song was written years ago as a demo with some old bandmates. It never saw the light of day. Recently one of those old friends came for a visit and we recorded him singing the song to my acoustic guitar.

From there, I decided to 'produce' the song from those humble beginnings. I programmed some drums, sang some harmony, played some more guitar... then solicited some MacJammers for some help!

Tobin Meuller (http://www.macjams.com/artist/TobinMueller) played some fabulous parts for this song. Contributing Electric Piano and Hammond parts.

Drew Kopr (http://www.macjams.com/artist/Drew%20Kopr) offered some fabulous bass playing for this track.

Lead Vocals and Lyrics by my good friend, Tim Triolet.

Thanks to the many macjammers who contributed their ears and ideas!
Lyrics Hey, wait a minute Mr. Gray
You're on your own
Hey, well I don't end up in this
On my own
Wait, wait a minute
Just one more day

How many times must we fall
How many times must we see
And how many times will we buy into lies
With the hopes that they will set us free

My, All my dreams are shining
Like a star
Bright, I will let them smile
Tears are hard

How many times must we fall
How many times must we see
And how many times will we buy into lies
With the hopes that they will set us free

Bright, All your dreams are right
In your heart

How many times must we fall
How many times must we see
And how many times will we buy into lies
With the hopes that they will set us free

Mr. Gray and his layers of musical colors
Nice tune! I had a gas playing on this for you. I really dig
the unapologetic way Tim sings. Your mix is very balanced,
well mic'd, and I really like the way the drums are
programmed (altho they could be louder). The colors of keys
and guitars weave in and out nicely. I still think the lead
vocals are a tad too hot, keeping some of the cool details in
the back ground. But this is a relay nice tune, full of
summer energy, honest bravado, questions stated with
confidence and strength of character. Really nice track.

Mr. Gray and his layers of musical colors
Thanks so much for your contributions to this track. I would have never
conceived the textures you provided for this song. I am quickly learning the
value of collaborating with the members of MacJams and you've lead the way to
this realization. Thank you.

Mr. Gray and his layers of musical colors
I agree that the textures and layers of musical colors in this piece are soo good. I did not expect that either.

Nice harmonies, like the singin.

Like the country feel to this.
The drums are terrrifc on this.

Good going here, Very entertaining!

Cameron said 1198 days ago
great production
All the sounds are well balanced on this track, very full
and clear. The overall effect is "big", but not cluttered.

I like the way the vocals start out with a thin
accompaniment texture, then builds up gradually as the
song progresses. The vocal quality is excellent, good
harmonies and easily-understood words.

The bass punches up this track nicely, and the Hammond
organ adds a LOT! It provides a good underpinning of
sound to the whole.

FINE job, Darren!!

great production
Cameron, thanks for listening to this one in it's early stages and for your great
ideas for fine tuning the arrangement. You always give honest and insightful
views,opinions and ideas. Thank you.

Very nice tune!
I like the composition, well played, but a few "wrong" bass notes. The pitch of the vocals are a problem, I think. Overall a good one!

Very nice tune!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Could you be a little more specific
about "pitch problems"? If there are indeed any probs there, i'd like to correct
them.

Thanks

Very nice tune!
I'll have to respectfully disagree with the pitch comment. There may have
been a note or two that went a tiny bit astray or strained maybe on one
higher note, but overall I find the vocals on this one pitch-perfect.

Well constructed and well delivered song altogether!

Great Job Darren!
Aside from my few "wrong" bass notes (wtf?), I think you and Tobin and the singer did an amazing job with this. The production is really good--clean and big. I love all the nuances in this song that you hear through good speakers. I believe my bass probably could have been played a little tighter in just a few parts, but overall, for an hour's work, I thought it came out well, and the sound you achieved for it and the rest of the instruments is really, really good.

Like Cameron, I like the way the vocals start out with a thin
accompaniment texture, then build up gradually as the
song progresses. The vocal quality is excellent, good
harmonies and easily-understood words.

I really like how the Hammond organ fills out the sound!

Great job to you and the rest of us on this killer tune!

Great Job Darren!
Thanks for contributing your bass playing to this song. It's really easy to
incorporate well recorded, well played parts. And you went above and beyond
supplying me with 4 complete bass lines when 1 would do just fine.

I hope we can do more work together in the future.

Peter Greenstone said 1197 days ago
Excellent
Great job, all of you involved. It sounds really tight. I got to
hear some earlier version of this as DC was working on the
mix. It came out sounding really slick, and it's catchy. The
energy pulls me in and gets me in the groove. Top notch.

Pro Sound!
This was mixed extremely well! This is top notch in my
books. Excellent job!!!

I LOVE
This Track...
The production is excellent, I dont mind Tims lead vox so
upfront, Great backing harmonies Darren.
The whole track has a wonderful energy that runs
throughout and the backing bass from Drew and Tobins
accompianment lend a rich fullness in sound.Great drums
and yeah... COOL track indeed.

Wonderful track... from all of you..

Shades of...
Styx? A Lot of energy in this production. The build is good
(at first I thought it was going to be a folk tune). Tobin's
Hammond gave it a fat and powerful musical base and the
hot, tasty licks on lead guitar were great. I might have
given the bass a tad more presence and prominence in
this mix, but that's really just a matter of taste.

Re: "pitch" problems... because of the striking clarity of
the vocals, minor offs might be noticeable to the most
sensitive ears. The only one I would really be concerned
with is at the very beginning of the song, when the vocal
is virtually "naked," with only the acoustic guitar providing
accompaniment.

He slides into the note somewhat awkwardly. Easily
replaced, because it's a phrase perfectly repeated
throughout the song.

But overall, very nice work!

Kind of
at a loss for words. I love the writing, vocals and production. This is just a great song, and I dig the guitar solo in there... wow, the singing. All around amazin'.

ka-klick said 1196 days ago
Good solid pop
There is one point right near the end that something sounds
somewhat constricted, maybe the instrumentals dropping
out exposes something in the voice EQ, but it's really a very
subtle thing and may just be me.

Excellent song, well written and tightly performed.

dchapman said 1196 days ago
Good solid pop
It's probably a side effect of the multipressor on the main outputs as the
instruments drop out.

Light of day
So, finally this song sees the light of day! Well
deserved, for it shines with brilliance. Very pro
sounding. Excellent vocals. Well balanced. Nice
outtro. The only part that seems weak to my ear is
the little electric piano run at the end of the interlude
after "With the hopes that they will set us free"...
Could use a little more volume and an edgier
voicing.

Light of day
While I understand how the highly respected (with good reason) Mr. Schletty
might not agree, as a keyboard player I have to say that I love that electric piano
riff, its tone, and its auto-panning feature. Set up by the sweet acoustic guitar
that preceeds it, I think it helps blast into the new section very effectively and
uniquely. Very cool riff, Tobin, as was your entire organ track. Really well done.

I really enjoyed your guitar work, Darren, both acoustic and electric. Thanks for
the work you put into this.

Great Sound and Song
Nice job guys, all around very nice performance. Clean
vocals and instruments. I especially like the Electric Guitar
1/2 through - good jam!

snowdragon said 1193 days ago
almost missed this one
glad I didn't. I generally avoid the "pop" genre on
principle.

But really enjoyed the southern rock feel of this one, the
gutsy strat that felt like home and that cool little electric
piano riff.

And the lyric "how many times will we buy into lies in the
hopes that they will set us free."

aclarke said 1193 days ago
Brilliant
Excellent all the way around. Vocals are terrific, guitars are
amazing- lead solo was energetic and melodic. Drew's bass
line was great. Really liked the little organ fill at the
beginning. I really like every component of this... beautiful
job on this one, Darren- production also top notch, as usual.

Fab Collab!
This is a perfect example of why MJ's is such a cool place
to create music.
To get all these contributions to 'round' out this fine
song--really makes it shine!

Great song, and well done. Thanks for sharing it here :)

I'd have missed it...
... if not for your thank-you post...

This is truly great, and I regret not having added to its
numbers in its first week, though it has obviously had a
great run...

The lyric is great, especially the hook line... I love the
singing... (don't be offended if I say I hear this Hootie and
the Blowfish thing with this tune)... the guitar solo is
awesome, and every little piece of the tune is ear candy...

It's not too full, but there's nowhere where it's empty.

Ed

P. S. Takes better ears than mine to hear any off notes,
bass or otherwise. This sounds CD ready to me...

Impressed by your studio
...I found out that you exist and that you do so in a very fine way on
this tune. Very nice arrangement here.

Professional in quality and rich w/ content, this is just very well done.

Solid lyrics and beautiful vocal work, as well.

Hopefully, congratualtions can never be too late.

this is one to crank
I like this one loud. The louder, the better. I listened to this
repeatedly on the day I discovered it, but never left a note to
let you know how much I like it. That little electric piano run
that Tobin does is an especially nice touch, but the overall
blend of sounds and vocal harmonies make this track stand out
regardless. 'Mr. Gray' is a great abstract character name, too.
