Description Recently I found out that a long time friend had passed away. Rob was a gentle man, a talented guitarist and a decent human being. We played together when I was just starting out in the early seventies. They were beautiful times, with families and friends enjoying the sun, and the lucky few playing music.
The news made me think about those endless Sydney summer afternoons spent at his house in Oatley - a Sydney waterside suburb - playing music, drinking beer (and lots of tea!) and just hanging very loose.
This song is for Rob, who deserved a much better deal from life than he received.
The remix has a much tighter sound and is much better musically - give it a try LOUD.
My apologies for the water feature - it will go away in the next mix (had planned kookaburras in the trees, but didn't have the time to record them!).
Lyrics Lyrics: The Thin Man Dreams
© 2005 Neil Porter

Heading down the Oatley stairs
The thin man waits, enjoys a cup of tea
Hanging out in rattan chairs
Musicians smoking, talking aimlessly

Mid summer sun has left the small
Verandah as the band begins to play
The thin man takes his Gibson
And it shimmers in the middle of the day

A gentle man
He stayed serene
A subtle hand
The thin man in a dream

The thin man closes happy eyes
He smiles and lets the rhythm have its way
He weaves a tingling tapestry
Floats unsuspected notes above the fray

Session over, vibe is up
The thin man’s smile's engraved upon his face
As he prepares another cup a happy thin man
Glides about the place

A gentle man
He stayed serene
A subtle hand
The thin man in a dream

Heading up the Oatley stairs
The thin man waves, enjoys a cup of tea

Great pace
Great feel to this track. So casual and just right pacing. The
gentle lead fills are perfect. The build of the tune is classic.
I'd prefer it without the water sounds; consider releasing a
third version with no water? I really liked the quality of the
first one, even tho this one has a better sound all around,
and nice subtle additions, especially vocally and on keys.
Delightful tune, and a wonderful tribute.

Great pace
Thanks Tobin,
In the first version, I was really focussed on the words and the guitars
were sloppy (although they fitted the mood fairly well). On this one, I
was morte interested in making the song more "listenable" . I couldn't
agree more about the water sounds - they just seemed like a good idea
at the time!
This version really captured the vibe we had - relaxed, casual, loose.
They were better days in more ways than one.
Always appreciate your comments,
Neil

Very Nice Guitar
I like the little leads throughout this song. The rhythm
sways in a very senuous and flowing way. The lyrics are a
wonderful way to celebrate a friend's life.

Very Nice Guitar
Thanks Bronco,
I'm really enjoying having a six string, and looking forward to getting
better on it. Thanks for your comments, it's my favourite song (of mine)
so far.
Cheers,
Neil

very nice and smooth
love the harmonies throughout, but especially on the chorus.

jiguma said 1231 days ago
very nice and smooth
Thanks Joseph,
I really enjoy doing the harmonies, even though they're still a bit rough,
and they help cover up the thinness in my voice. Glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers,
Neil

What a lovely song!
I was enjoying it for the interesting lyrics and then you
came in with those great harmonies!
Very nice! Great song all around. Yes, there might be a bit
of 'roughness' here and there, but for me, that is part of
its charm. I feel like I'm right there, and in fact, I want to
join in singing!

Thanks for posting this :)
fav'd and d/l'd!

Unusual, effective mix
The placement of voices here, leads on the ouside L & R,
harmonies in the middle, seemed odd at first, but I grew
to really like this mix, and the entire piece has a tropical,
easy groove to it. Excellent lyrics. Makes me want to have
been there.

Happy to be the one to send this to the Rating Picks.

Unusual, effective mix
Thanks for the comment Tom. Any mixing successes on this are down to
what sounded alright on the night (hence the unfortunate watery fx). I'm glad
you liked the track - it was a very special time for me.

Simon and Garfunkelish
Sounds really good. I like this song. Good pacing,
harmonies, instrumentation, everything. Vocals could be a
little tighter. However, has a an immediate and live feel
which I like.

Thanks Richard,
Vocals are not really my thing, but maybe someday I'll learn to tighten
them up. Appreciate your comment.

CSNY
Kinda Byrdsy/CSNY with an interesting vocal melody.
Liked it. Nice arrangement.

CSNY
Thanks for the comment compyellow. You sure nailed my roots pretty
well with the Byrds/CSNY comment. Wish I could sing like McGuinn (or
any of them for that matter!).

Very sunny...
This song has a lovely roll to it. I like the slightly distorted
guitar; in fact the two guitars make a nice irresistable
rhythm together. And the organ comes in and lifts it to
another step. I think you can take the organ up just a tiny
bit too. Like your harmony vocals too, and the way you
drop down into that odd modulation on Dream. A lovely
way of remembering the good times with a friend.

Very sunny...
Thanks Mando,
I'm doing a remix (without water feature for a start) and will play with the
keyboard level a bit. The sound of the guitar is, as usual, just what comes
out when I plug it in. Must get more organised and take notes about how
these things happen! That harmony on dream is another case in point.
Cheers,
Neil

nice island feel
Adding that water feel was cool as well.

The bass sounds cool too. Nice beat and the words fit right
in. The guitar leads maintain that island feel quite nicely.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks Bill, appreciate the comment. Glad someone likes the water fx - I'm
still not sure. Despite the circumstances (or perhaps because of them) i'm
really happy with the way this one turned out.
Cheers,
Neil

Very refreshing and groovin
Uh...Dare I say that this is DEEPLY COOL! It had happen sooner or later. I REALLY like this. This is one of finer ones... Love the way it's shuffes in and further into the different grooves. Like the vocal arrangement alot. Likin the guitar work...It actually feels kind silly pointing out what I like, because I especially like the way the entire thing is very well put together...

Congrads!

Very refreshing and groovin
Thanks for your very kind comments Cyd. This song really means a lot to me
(still brings a tear to my eye despite the many times I've played it in the past
few weeks). Despite the years, it really seems to me to have the vibe from
Oatley in a wierd way.
Really appreciate you dropping by.

Feeling that this arrangement is good too.
It is a sense that is lighter than the previous one.
This tune is a City impression.

I'm right there at the small verandah
Felt like jamming along to this one. What a lovely song, and a good ambient feeling. The open tuned G suits the song well. Bass and drums is right on time and the harmonies gives a kind of live performance feeling.

Like the lyrics. Sounds like you had a good time together.

Peace, Thoddi

I'm right there at the small verandah
Thanks Thoddi,
It all fell together pretty well really (fell being the operative word!). The times
were great - we were young (which is a good start) and discovering music and
life in general. Times sure seemed more innocent then!
Appreciate your visit,
Neil

Wonderful Feel
Hi Neil,
Wonderful feel to this song, very lazy summers arvo's overlooking Oatley Bay. Thanks for the effort to allow others to enjoy what is a very personal song for you!
BTW, I loved the water feature, probably because it evokes my own memories of the Georges River: I must take the boat out there again next summer.
Kepp up the good work, I'm lokking forward to your next post.

Wonderful Feel
Thanks Steve,
nice to hear from someone who knows the place - I guess you might
understand the feel I was after. I have a new one up now - about living on
the far south coast - maybe you'll like that too.
Cheers,
Neil

I don't know...
how I missed this one Neil. It's special. I am truly touched by this tribute
to your fallen friend. Since the early seventies, I've lost five dear friends.
I've written tributes for two of them, which I hope to post eventually. I
only hope I can honor their memory as well as you honored that of your
friend Rob. Your lyrics are at once interesting (very picturesque) and
moving. The music is simultaneously happy and sad. Great job.
