Description A lullaby of sorts, for those, like me, who sometimes have trouble letting the day go...written sort of backwards, as if it's me, or someone, who has to call the day home and put it to bed...as if the day itself has to be convinced...This is a jingle-jangle electric version...due to the importing to GB, it has been hard to balance the vocals...Female vocals from my old bandmate Phyllis, and I hope they survive the transfer to mp3, 'cause they're pretty good...My first post, and I'm pretty nervous...I may post the original acoustic version later for comparison's sake...

Hardware Before there was GarageBand, there was the Boss BR-8, the first piece of equipment that made digital recording easy...The acoustic guitar, electric 12-string and vocal tracks started life on my BR-8, and got transferred to GarageBand, where they met up with bass and electric guitars...So...

Thanks, ziti! I appreciate getting some guitar player appreciation right out of the
box, and having you of all people say it's a decent guitar solo is tremendously
encouraging...

I did have trouble balancing the guitars without pushing levels into the red, and
I was struggling to keep the vocals strong enough...I'm glad you like the vocals
after all that...

Thanks again for the all the encouragement so far! I can't say how much I
appreciate it...

What a great sound you've got in that orchestra! And oh,
thats a good melody (I am writing while listening the first
time) and the chorus is good ... and a female singress ...
woo good acoustic backup sound and nice guitar solo,
you are a good singer too. Nice ending.

Listening second time ... Must admit that I am surprized in
a positive way!, maybe because you've been around so
long without having a song, that I have gotten used
("primed" or "conditioned" in psychology language?) to
regard you as a listener rather than a producer.

The tune has a very cool tempo that I like a lot. I like your
style a lot! (High rating)!

Test! You and ziti have been big supporters and encouragers for me to get
out there and post a song for what seems like ages, and of course that means
that a lot of my nerves have been about what you "veterans" would think...

I am VERY pleased that you like the production, and very pleased indeed that
you are wanting to replay the song a lot. That is a huge win for me as a
songwriter. I really want to write the kind of songs that someone would sing
to a loved one, or sing around a campfire...things that stick with a person...so
that is the best thing that I could have heard, my friend...

Glad you like Phyllis' vocals. She's a wonderful singer...

Gosh, and to get called an "orchestra"...what could be better than that??...

	Very nice A very enjoyable listen. You have a very soothing, warm voice and Phylis' backup harmonies are excellent. Your voices compliment each other very nicely. Everything sounds well balanced to me; the additions of the bass and the electric guitar were a great choice as they really fill this melody out. I think it works well as a lullaby. It's soothing and comforting.

Peter, I'm glad you listened and glad you liked the production. Since I have
always loved your vocal sound, I take your comments and thoughts about the
vocal blend seriously and I'm please you think the blend is good. Phyl and I
sang together for about a dozen years long ago...

I am also glad that you addressed the song as a song, and as a lullabye, and
glad that you think it works in that regard...

LillNisse makes note of the tempo, and this is a real slow one...I think it's
something like 55 bpm, and it's different coming up with a melody and parts
at that sort of tempo than it is when the song is a more standard 120 bpm,
which I have also done...I think the tempo helps the lullabye feel...

Nice Piece
Nice piece, Ejh. Laid back and pleasant. I like the lyrics.

Not that you asked, but my other thoughts...

Production-wise, it sounds good, except for two things -
the aforementioned guitar solo ought to be louder, and
the second thing is the BR-8 and its snare. The drums in
GB sound considerably better than the BR-8 (though that
may be a stylistic decision,) and the snare feels sluggish
through the song - like it's dragging and holding the song
back at times. What this really is is the acoustic guitar
playing ever so slightly ahead of the beat at times, which
gives the illusion that the snare is "late," which is probably
isn't, unless you intentionally programmed it to be slightly
behind the beat. Either way, I'd like the hear some GB
drums in place of the BR-8, and then put the snare every
so slightly AHEAD of the beat. Then the snare and the
acoustic would be on the same page and it'll all sound
tighter. Even better would be some nice sampled real
drum loops (ie Drums On Demand.)

This is like "what comes around goes around," because a
year ago I posted a song "Can't Back Down" here on
MacJams and I was using drums from Reason, which were
dead on beat-wise, and someone had made a similar
comment to me, though they just said the drums didn't
sound right. My guitar work was ever so slightly ahead of
the beat during some spots in the song, and the Reason
drums emphasized that. And Tobin suggested a harmony
on the chorus. I went back and replaced the Reason
drums with Drums On Demand loops, and added the
harmony, and it was SO much better - night and day. The
DOD loops are accurate but they've got a human feel to
them - they're not dead center sample accurate to the
beat (thank God) and suddenly the slightly rushed guitar
sounded perfectly fine. I put that song as track 2 on my
CD. Without the changes I would not have put it on the
CD at all.

I know you didn't specifically ask for critique, but it just
reminded me so much of the issue I had with my own tune
that I thought I'd bring it up. Keep doing what you're
doing! Post more tunes. I liked this one quite a bit.

This is very helpful, and if my own posts don't make this plain, I like the
exchange of really helpful criticism/commentary...

You are of course right, or at least right-ish, about the BR-8 snare...the BR-8
has a pretty rudimentary drum thing going on, and I would love to replace it
with something better...and I actually tried...and the truth is, I don't know
how...yet...

There IS a stylistic piece to this too, though...the original composition was
framed to be in the mode of some old, slow Neil Young a la Out On The
Weekend, or Richard Thompson a la the Fairport Convention tune Sloth...so
SOME of that drag-the-beat thing is probably intentional...whether it works
or not, that's another question...

But see, this is what makes MacJams so exciting to me, and so good-
hearted...you're offering me the benefit of what you learned from a track of
your own, and ideas about what has worked for you...I take that very
seriously, and appreciate it fully...Now you've got me thinking...How WOULD
this sound with better drum sounds and with the acoustic smack on with the
beat? I've got several alternate versions of the tune sitting in GB from the
BR-8, and I may come back and try it again with your comments in mind...

Feel free, he hinted, to email me with some more details about your
experience with Drums On Demand, and in particular with how to use them
with a pre-existing track...

It's great to hear from another BR-8 user, too...I think that was/is a pivotal
piece of gear...if they had ONLY made provision for outputting the eight
tracks on separate channels, I would use that thing forever...Pretty decent
sound for data compression, too...Plus it's EASY and it's FUN, which is what
makes GarageBand what it is...

I have the impression from your MacJams name that we are of an age, as they
say...and I have this old, unused communications/journalism degree...so I've
been interested in the pieces you've posted that betray that ol' JO
heritage...So I'm really happy that you stopped by for a listen...

	Wonderful. Actually, I thought the drum was deliberately slow - but what the hell. This sounds so Irish - especially with the harmonies. I really like the warmth of this. I liked the guitar solo too, but I wonder if it would be nice to fit another instrument in there just to give a different texture?

Wonderful.
Yes, the feel of the track was supposed to be slow...As noted above, the
sound of the drum could be better...it was supposed to be in keeping with the
vibe of a slow Neil Young or Richard Thompson sort of tune...

I used to play in my old band with a woman who, among her other talents,
played the Irish bouzouki...AND the mandolin...that was a great sound to add
to a jangly folk rock piece...I was also fortunate enough, on one day of my
life, to have John Cunningham from the Scottish group Silly Wizard play on a
couple of my songs...so I AM open to getting other sounds in there. My old
friend Dave also added some hammer dulcimer to one of my tunes once, and
there's another bright and spangly sound. I like having something bright like
that on top, and then a deep bass or drum underneath, if I can achieve that.

Drew, I'm glad you like the vocals and harmonies, and the guitar sounds. I'm
also glad the overall production and feel is something you like well enough to
have fav'd it. Since I really liked your collab. with thetiler, that has impact for
me.

You'd probably also have some thoughts about one of my big struggles on
this tune, which was, to get a halfway usable bass sound. I kept getting buzz
on my (admittedly inexpensive) bass, and ended up using the the GB "Round
Sound" bass, which was usable by virtue of having no highs at all. Then, not
being a bass player by any means, I did a track just playing the root note of
the chords, and then did a track with more melodic playing that wandered a
bit, and then more or less combined them. I think a "for real" bass player
would get the job done with a cleaner, less cluttered and wooly sound on the
bottom.

I've been tempted to save up for a Line 6 Bass POD, to see if that would
help...Or paying someone to shield or ground the bass or something...I don't
HAVE a CRT monitor on this thing anymore, so I don't know where the buzz is
coming from...

Anyway...that was a long reply to a reply...but I was thrilled that you left a
comment, as I had considered emailing you anyway to ask about bass sounds
and whatnot...We'll leave bass 'taste' and 'talent' for another day...

I think I know why you were nervous. You knew in your heart of hearts that this is a terrific song and if we didn't respond well, then it would mean we were all deaf in both ears and had no souls and then you wouldn't be able to hang out with us anymore.

I definitely dig the Neil Young feel in this song. The vocals perfectly suit the vibe of the music and I agree, tell Phyllis she sounds terrific on this.

So cool to get the chance to suport you, when you've been so supportive to people here. Thanks for posting and make some more, please.

with people with three working ears and souls of a certain verifiable size...So
you see, it all makes sense...

I am so glad you found your way to this. I was hoping you'd like it...I dare say
there'll be another song or two posted with a Neil Youngish vibe, although that's
not the only sound in the ol' repertoire...It DOES give one a little license in the
lead guitar and vocal department, to go with feel over technique...

Tobin, thank you very much for your kind comments. I'm glad you like my
voice, and Phyl's. My wife and I were listening to Morning Whispers and What
Thou Lovest Well last night... The latter features some wonderful singing
itself...

I'm also pleased, and surprised, that you like the guitar break, and the
layers...you seem like a guy who can lay something complicated out in a take
or two. I was talking to ziti the other day about how much layering "helps" my
style; the unresolved note in take one ends up becoming harmony when I
manage to resolve the phrase in take two... I rather like such happy accidents,
but I'm surprised and delighted when someone who knows what they're doing
finds something to like. I don't want to be falsely modest, 'cause I like what I
did and how the guitars came out, but I tend to regard the sound as an
acquired taste...

	very nice! Your guitar playing is excellent and you got a very good sound quality on this recording, actually. I liked the live, reverb aspects of the sound. The opening vocals sounded just a bit tentative, then grew stronger as the song went on, with the addition of harmonies. The combination of sounds and your chord structure is pleasing to the ear. Cameron, I'm pleased to hear that you like it! Hegira, one of the first songs I
downloaded (the seventh, actually), remains in rotation in my iTunes Mac and
office CD's, and is still a favorite with my son. I think at this point he thinks
he owns it...

I'm pleased that you and others have appreciated the guitar sound, and the
vocal harmonies, as those are areas I tend to love and on which I focus. Glad
you like the reverbiness, which I think is just the result of a number of small
effects and direct mic tracks adding up. Add a little compression and it all
seems to come forward. And even an electric 12-string with NO reverb sorta
sounds like it has reverb anyway.

I started playing guitar very late. I used to sing with a rock band when I was in
high school, but I had no musicial training, and I only played a little
harmonica and bongoes. I finally started learning guitar when I was at
college. I was nineteen. I am envious of you, who are starting at age eight! I
actually tried to start when I was nine, but I couldn't play the guitar my
parents bought me. Years later, I found that guitar, fixed it up and re-strung
it...and I STILL can't play it.

You and Edge can start younger if you like, and you will be amazing players
by the time you are nineteen!

	Soothing Lullabys are meant to soothe and this one does its job perfectly. With sweet, restful lyrics, warm vocals and wonderful harmonies (Phyllis does a great job), one can't help but feel tension unwinding while listening to this song. Great job!
