having used both soundtrack and garageband, i am a little upset that gb is missing some of the very convenient features of soundtrack. the option click menu is the best one for the most common and useful edits. also the change offset. if you could work with live instruments it might be better than gb (i know, sacreligious). you can also save on the fly without causing your song to quit playing. any comments?

I was using garageband to record all of my vocals. And just last night I found out I could record live vocals into soundtrack! I seriously didn't know I could do that. And you can apply so many more effects unlike Garageband. It's crazy awesome! I'm going to have so much fun with my newest songs. Adding reverb and chorus is pretty cool. I'm an amateur at this but those effects make it sound professional. Now I know how they do it!

If it weren't for some of features in GB, I would be using Soundtrack instead. It's much more robust... and the record multiple takes feature is great. The nice thing though, is that once you install Soundtrack and GB, GB has the benefit of all of soundtrack's plug ins... and let me tell you that it's great to have access to that 31 band eq in GB!

yes Soundtrack has a lot of effects and you can control them in details.

But it seem that Soundtrack has no instrument and midi tracks!

While it doesn't have any software instruments, it can sync midi devices and will also supports rewire so other programs can be run at the same time.

I started my computer music using with Soundtrack. Dabbled with Garageband. Tried a downloaded copy of Cubase for a while and just recently purchased Logic Express.... and ya know, there are features in soundtrack that I wish were in Logic... like the ripple edit features, and the click anywhere to move your playhead... just to name a few.

Soundtrack is a great program, just wish it wasn't ditched by apple. GB should have taken features from this program. It's just as simple. If they moved the software instruments and midi editor to Soundtrack, they'd have an amazing program.

I agree with Dave. It was a powerful tool. Don't understand the ways of Apple. It's like the policy is to eliminate the competition by just buying them. $lap an aqua interface on it and call it Mac Dev.

I hate the interface in soundtrack and in logic express..........the grey is kind of drab, and not as easy to see as the interface in Garageband. Does anyone know how to change this up?

Hey thanks for some tips about Sountrack. I have the program, but really have not used it much because I could not see what the benefits were. I am going to check out the option click feature, and the record multiple takes feature. Thanks for pointing out those features to me, and also the fact that more effects are possible.

Does anyone know if soundtrack will handle more tracks better than Garageband, as in a symphonic piece I sometimes end up with 14 or more tracks, and my mac starts smoking if I push it there. I guess that Logic would be the solution probably. I just got Logic Express, but I can't see any logic at all about it. It seems like a nightmare to me, and it all looks foreign. I don't know, maybe it really is easier than I think, but there are just so many menus and things........ahhhhhhh.

I am with you on the love of the 31 band eq in Garageband DChapman. I have used it mostly on my piano tracks, so far. Really amazing how many different colors and piano sounds you can create with this EQ.

Amen,

While adding notation was a "neat" idea for GB2, taking the best features from Soundtrack would have been much better and more useful.

and the click anywhere to move your playhead...

Is this different from GB's click anywhere to move your playhead?

yes it is. there is an entire quick menu that opens from "control click" on a loop containing a bunch of common tasks: transpose, track speed, duplicate, split, etc. also control click off of a loop, on the timeline, brings up: add marker, add/remove track, mute/solo, bypass effects, and more. Simple and fast. yes GB does most of these but the mousecentric interface flows more than quick keys or the main menu bar.

Just give Logic a fair shake and you'll love it. Geez... everyone is so tough on Logic. My biggest piece of advice for Logic is... for the most part, forget about how GB works and start from scratch. I haven't gone back to GB or Soundtrack since I got Logic Express instlalled. (but i still wish that logic had that damn ripple edit feature... why did FInal Cut and soundtrack get it, but not GB and Logic)

What's this do? My reason against Logic is the price. For the $300 I can get another mic, and some of the other things I'm lusting after. So, if I install the demo of Soundtrack, then trash it, will I get to keep the plugins? Heh! Or will they quit working?

I use Logic Express for composing, but if Soundtrack had Midi instruments i'd stick with it.
