I use LE7 and am starting to do a lot more MIDI. I love EXSP, but I'm considering getting reason for synth. Is it worth it? Can I get a Reason Plugin for Logic?

yeah dude reason rewires into logic but for the price its not worth it if your only going to use it for synth .

Hi. Yes Reason is worth every penny. For one thing Reason 4 is in Beta stage. Due out in the Fall,or so the Prop.s say. Check out the new features at the Prop.site. You have the advantage of haveing 2 samplers and what are called Combinator patches which allow for you to have mutiple insruments and FX saved as An item. Also there are thousands of FREE patches and sounds for Reason on the web. It works as DJ mentioned as a Rewire item.So you would open Logic first then Reason and close in reverse order. Check out the new features in R4. Taylor

Use Native Instruments' absynth 4 or 3, NI fm-7 or 8, Imposcar, M-tron, etc. for the real stuff. If you want kiddy stuff use reason. Hahahahaha, hmmm no use reason if u want a plethora of one-offs, sometimes so so and sometimes excellent home-made synths. It has the disadvantage or perhaps advantage of being a uniform platform. I wouldn't and don't use it. Put your learning curve in universal sound design and then use the depthy possibilities of the other synths(absynth!!!) plus your knowledge in tweaking the before mentioned synthesizers. It will pay itself off, most of the times....

thanks guys! My friend has some East West Sampler he says is awesome. Anyone know anything about that?

June 27, 2007 4:39:09 AM
Hi. I thinl East/West is only a Rompler. Or rather comes with a rompler to play the samples. Basically a sample library thing to my knowledge. It depends what your needs are. But most importantly how far along you are and how deep your pockets are. I don't agree that reason is some simple item that does one off stuff at all. That isn't even close to its' power. You asked about reason so I would so yes it is worth it. But alsoo as mentioened if you have deep pockets and want to get deeply involved. The NI stuff is great. But 2 of their products might cost more than reason. So depends on what you want to do. If you want to go beyond what LE has to offer in regards to sampleing. Than Kontakt would be a great investment. There are others but you may find that you would like to have a format that will work with other things.Kontakt works with the other NI stuff such as Battery and will open Akoustik piano stuss as well as other formats. But for an over-all suite of synths samolers and drum machines as well as FX and the soon to come new features in Reason4 you won't find anything close at the price. Outside of NI stuff there are many. Buy a copy of a UK mag. Computer Music. You get 2 free synths. Free Alpha CM and the amazing Zebra CM. Go download the free version of Addictive drums online also. I use Reason/ Live6/ Logic Pro7.. Also Cameleon5000,,imPoscar,,Minimonsta ( which will eat you alive in the CPU zone),,Zebra2,,Absynth,,Battery,,Reaktor,,Kontakt,,Battery (one of my all time faves,,FM8,, And some other stuff.Alo Atmospher,,RMX and recycle. But if you do some math you might find all that a bit weighty in regards to $$s. imPoscar Zebra2 and Kontakt would be a nice starting point. As I mentioned reason has 2 samplers which allow for editing. The EX in LE I don't think allows for much editting. I'm not a fan of romplers which is what I think East/West supplies to play their samples. I think it might be a cut down version of Kontakt with many limited features. It's a big world out there for softsynths. Take your time. Taylor

I just found my old Graphite G3 Clamshell (OS9) and it's full of Reason 2.0 songs I did way back when the clamshell was sexy and both sides of the display worked.

If I take the time to swap out the monitor from another clamshell, will there be anything I can do with these Reason 2.0 files in GB '08 on my iMac? I would image I can export mp3s or aiff files, but what about midi files? I don't have Reason on the new system. I loved it for the drum program. Wish GB had something as intuitive.

Just curious. It's the only reason I'd invest the hours into the display swap.

Thanks all.

Bob

Hi 5...Sorry couldn't help myself.....If you stil have all your stuff from R-2 then you can update for free to R 2.5..It runs in OSX..However I don't think it is intel/UB compatible...I would reccomend you check out the pricing for upgrading to R-4..

Reason-4 is a major upgrade..I went from 3 to 4 and it cost $125 at GC...Go to the Prop.s site and see what it would cost..Also check out the link there to the Youtube videos....It should rewire into GB..But I don't know..I don't have GB..It works in LP8..Worth checking out..JET

Also of note..If anyone has R-4..The update to 4.01 has been released today..But it seems a bit slow to download...I wonder why???? LOL

There's no reason I have found to want it. I got the limited edition version with one of my controllers. I rewired it with LE7 and found it to be cumbersome. Maybe I should try it with Logic Pro 8 now that I've upgraded. Seems it has a bit of a learning curve and as of now I'm not up to the challenge.

Not to change the subject, but somebody mentioned East West Sampler, and I have been having great difficulty now in using it in Logic 8. If fact it doesn't work period.

It used to work in Garageband, think only one of the two EastWest Sliver symphony orchestras work in Garageband now and non at all in Logic 8. Because it is outdated I think I can't use or ever will be able to use East West Symphony Orchestra and XP Silver Symphony Logic 8.

If I were to lay down that dough, I would simply get Logic Studio. The synths are just as good as Reason, the sequencer is WAY more intuitive and you can record audio. The new version blows the doors of of LE7. You also get a great drum machine in Logic now and a full-on Software Sampler (although I like the interface to the NNXT), plus some incredible sounding plugin effects (take a look at the specs for the new Logic Studio).

Reason is great if you are going to stay within the realms of electronica and related genres, but Logic lets you go anywhere.

I have Reason, but stopped upgrading after 2.5 as I found that Logic had better audio quality and a more flexible working environment. I still have it installed on my G3 laptop and use it as a super-synth module for Opcode Vision (awesome sequencing) but generally never touch it. Just my 2 cents.

BTW, here are a coupe of samples:

Orchestral done in Reason: http://www.macjams.com/song/11664

Orchestral done in Logic 8 Studio: http://www.macjams.com/song/37817

You will not a definite difference in clarity and power in the sound. Reason is very cool, but Logic Studio is awesome (and about the same price!)

That's silly. Reason is a complete environment for midi and audio tracks, but you already have LE. So you'd have to rewire.

To get Reason just for the synths also doesn't make sense. You should probably upgrade to LE8 which gives you the (totally fabulous) ES2 as well as various other synths.

What sort of synthesis are you looking for? There are plenty of free or cheap instruments around that you can use with Logic.

You mentioned East/West. But that's a company that sells sample sets. You either load those in existing samplers or they come with their own rompler, so that is completely independent of the Reason/Logic question. Anything they sell can be used with Logic.

Victor.

Rewire is an exponential tool that I employ to formulate songs, but basically, it is an environment I just really like to play around in (};-P) Don't get me wrong, There is an amazing arsenal of sound to be found there. however I tend to agree with Mr. Diesel in regards to Logic 8!!! since I like to live off the fatted calf a bit I went for 8 and even though it robs some horsepower, it's what you can do with it that counts. SWEET! I dig Reason 3 & 4. Do you have to have it?????? probably not.

Yeah... I knew after I posted my message and went to bed last night it dawned on me that I meant rewire not side chain... other than that I'm in agreement... why bother buying reason when you could upgrade to logic studio from Logic Express for about the same cost and get more.
