![]() 8piscean8 | April 09, 2007 9:28:50 AM I found Logic Express really difficult at first also. Stick with it because it is definitely worth it. Check out this book below. It is really helpful in learning LE7. |
![]() Parichayaka | April 09, 2007 9:52:48 AM I'd have to do some more research but I believe ProTools is "free" only with a purchased piece of hardware from Digidesign. They just came out with a new little Mbox for around $300, but only having the free software without hardware may be another reason why it doesn't work. I've started learning Logic and agree, there's quite a learning curve with all the tiny buttons, channels and features of a Pro application (yep, Garageband if you just had the same kind of crisp and punchy sound I'd stick with you forever...) . I'm sure it's worth spending the time. A friend of mine who's using both programs suggested that while Logic is perfect for midi-based recording (and everything else, suffice to say - there's a reason why Logic is more complex than Garageband!), even imported aiff files sound "better" in ProTools and some musicians seem to do most work in programs like Logic Pro, including the mixing and mastering and bring the files into ProTools for finishing touches. Just one way of doing it of course... |
67JM | April 09, 2007 10:44:11 AM pro tools free is free...its a demo program that features a highly latented version so you cant really work with it...basically...its free because its worthless... i am now working on Protools and its great (but it took 2-3 months of messing around before it worked properly). i personally would stick to what you have. protools isnt any easier to use than what you have and you need to be really techie to get going..also it requires a lot more dedicated hardware that your current setup doesnt need. |
![]() Parichayaka | April 09, 2007 10:54:33 AM Interesting. I'm planning to upgrade my whole setup and I'm wondering what you suggest (besides a fast CPU with tons of memory) in terms of hardward when working with ProTools. You mentioned that you need a lot more than just a computer for ProTools - I'd be curious to know what the process of getting it to work properly involves in terms of hardware - from an actual user rather than a salesman that is :) |

Get you a book on Logic Express... it's worth it in the long run... |

I have an iBook G3 that I bought in 2003. I got the free ProTools software and it ran fine in Classic. I stopped using it when GarageBand came out. But it always worked in Classic, although I agree, it is a very limited program.
April 09, 2007 2:46:56 PM I am in that dark place where Digidesign and Apple ignore my needs. I bought an Mbox with Pro Tools LE over two years ago. Logic Express 7.1 and GarageBand work great with my Mbox and my G4/500 MHz. Alas, Pro Tools LE 6.4 stopped working under Mac OS 10.3.9 (Panther) when Apple released QuickTime 7. If I upgrade to Tiger I might be able to get Pro Tools LE to work again...but would probably have to pay for an upgrade to Pro Tools LE 7.x. I am not happy about spending so much money only to have Audiotechnica fail to support Pro Tools and the Mbox for my reasonable configuration. Please, no lectures about getting a faster Mac with Tiger. I have already spent my wad. I produce excellent mixes with Logic Express 7.1 and the Mbox. I'm happy about that.
![]() rover101 | April 09, 2007 4:24:46 PM If you want to keep it simple, but also want pro results, it's very easy; get Mackie's Traktion, now coming out in version 3; it's cheaper than Logic Express, simpler than Garageband, has one of the best mastering compressor/limiters around (Acuma's Final Mix), and is generally just the cat's whiskers for all things recording. The only caveat I have is that the reverb is not much beter than GB's, but since I have a Lexicon outboard unit, it doesn't matter to me. Høπe this helps, Shaky ('B)') |
![]() paddler | June 23, 2007 7:30:48 AM Every song I've put on macjams was mixed in protools free on os 9 - ok my music hopefully is reasonable, but it still does the job for me - basically records! (yeah - 2007) |
![]() paddler | June 23, 2007 7:44:09 AM I still use muzys on os 9 too but anyway - bout time I came into the modern world,I guess |
![]() Cori Ander | June 23, 2007 7:48:29 AM As long as I had my old OS 9 computer, I was VERY happy with Pro Tools free. Easy, logical, user friendly, dependable. Powerfull enough for me. Today I have Logic Express Difficult, illogical, user non-friendly, and (I admit) also dependable. And I am using 2-3% of its power. |
