hello my macjam friends. I am in search of a person who might be interested in helping me master songs. I opened My business 4 months ago and it is doing quite well and I am in need of some assistance. Let me just list what I am looking for in a person
1. someone who records their own music and is familiar with pro-tools, macintosh osx, and mixing
2. I need a person who thinks more like a musician than an engineer but hopefully has a good combination of both
3. Is more interested in honing the craft of mastering and isn't afraid to stretch the boundaries a little
4. willing to answer help related problems from customers
5. has good ears and can hear music in the full frequency range
6. has some experience in mastering (doesn't have to be on a professional level) as long as you are willing and passionate you will be a pro soon :)
7. has to be available and able to work on a tight turnaround time. I will train and help you in this area if needed before you work with a real customer
this is how you would be paid:
1. it is based on customer satisfaction, if they like what you have done they will pay for the file, each customer gets a demo of the mastered file- if they buy the master you will get %80 of the of the price listed (i.e. it is $25.00 list now- so you would get $20.00 if they bought the file) the %20 songmastering.com gets helps to pay for the overhead and advertisement plus paypal related charges, etc.
2. I want a good person who is interested and passionate about mastering. If this is your goal the money will follow. As you go along your % of bought files will go up as you hone the craft and see what people like and don't like. That is the beauty of the demo system, it is a win for the customer and the engineer in the long run.
3. remember, I want a creative musician with good ears more than i want a techno geek so don't be afraid to inquire.
4. if interested I will give you a few songs to master and a couple help related questions to answer as a tryout.
please fill out my contact form and I will get back to you as soon as possible. thank you for your time
Sincerely, Jim Mason

![]() jim mason | March 17, 2007 1:44:24 PM well, what can i say, i was shocked and pleased so many people tried-out to work with me. it really made feel good. there was no clear winner really, everyone had solid strengths, so i had to pick by the gut when it was all said and done. just let me say who did the best on each file: sample 1: a man buy the name of Stuart Wilson did a wonderful job, i loved it, i still don't quite know who you are by your macjams name so please contact me again if you read this. i would like to talk to you. sample 2: jim bouchard. he was the only one that didn't try to cover up the file with reverb, or in my words polishing a turd. which in this case just made the turd an even shinier turd. also kudos to all who weren't afraid to get their hand dirty on this one. since i cater to home recording enthusiasts i need people who are not afraid to work with turds. the Q+A - definitely, the best and most correct answers came from Dave Lorentz o.k so now to the winner, it is: JIM BOUCHARD: i liked his earthy approach to mastering and his enthusiasm to let me give him a shot even though he doesn't use pro-tools. he also made very quick work of things which i might need on occasion, even though i am trying to get him to slow down just a tad, but Jim seems enthusiastic and willing to learn and strive to get better. I pray that Jim and I will push each other to get better and rely on each other's advise. Mastering is a very humbling experience, and I think Jim and I might benefit from being around each other. I think we will make each other better. I sure hope so. Once again, thanks for everyone's efforts, I also pray that I get busy enough to add even more engineers in the future and you can bet that it will be a macjam's musician, thank you all !! |
