![]() AEROjet | March 19, 2006 12:07:50 AM So i have digital performer 4.52, and I'm wondering why the pencil tool is so lame for track automation. It's writing right angles instead of a nice curve when I"m penciling it in. Is there a way to fix that ot is it only another lame bug in 4.52. Oh yeah, and i'm not upgrading to 5 yet cause I'm unemployed |
![]() The Composer | March 19, 2006 5:33:04 AM Ok, for starters, get the 'FREE' upgrade to DP4.6 because has a number of nice features included... but that won't solve your 'lame' automation problem. Actually, the automation in DP is awesome, you just have to know how to use it. I'll assume that you're trying the pitch automation in the MIDI editor... if this is the case, on the bottom left-hand corner of your window there should be a menu that reads either "Lines" "Bar" or "Points". If you're doing something that can be smoothly automated, set that to "Lines"... however if you're editing something like velocity on values, you'll need to have this set to "Points". Also, some control parameters (usually on a 3rd party instrument) won't cope with smooth curve... for this purpose, use the pencil tool along with the straight line selection and it will just add the appropriate points in, even if it can't smooth it out. If you don't know about it already, check out the 'Tools' bar by going to studio>tools or shift O . Theres a couple of very neat tools in there including the straight line, parabola (good for exponential operations) and the sine tool (use shift and option to change frequency and phase) which can do wonderful things that just take ages to do by hand. Hope that helps. |
![]() AEROjet | March 19, 2006 5:40:08 PM yeah, i was automating a 3rd party insert. The apple AU hipass worked alright when I recorded life automation, but when I went in with the pencil tool to tweak some of it, those pesky lines wouldn't bend to my will. Oh I truely adore dp and all of it's glory, but There are a few bugs here and there. (one being trying to adjust the knobs on the 2 band EQ and them hardly rotating) |
![]() The Composer | March 19, 2006 7:12:05 PM [QUOTE](one being trying to adjust the knobs on the 2 band EQ and them hardly rotating) Yeah thats my one annoyance with DP... the parabola tool is the only thing it has to do with exponential functions. Everything else is linear. Not nessicarily a problem, except that almost everything about sound isn't linear. So you might be turning that knob over and over again, but if its up the high end, it'll barely be making the slightest difference. Oh yeah, the other thing you might be able to try is turning off the grid lock (top right hand corner, small button) and try to add a new point on the exsisting line and drag it to where you want it to be. |
