Mr. T D Cuz,

All depends on how far you're planning to go with this idea (like taking out Student Loans to Bankroll the thing). Just kidding. But, just barely (see Bug67's recent tally on this "hobby").

Mac Duals are ProTools friendly, up to a point, and when you throw in the M-Audio and PreSonus gear available and some Plug-In "gotta-haves", you're at the lower Pro level set up and minus about $10.0K after the Mic.s, Pre Amps, Compressors, Mixer and such.

But, the serious "home" DAW boys that I know use PCs, Focusrite gear, Neumann Mic.s, Acoustic Foam Baffles, for starters, and Expect to put near $20.0K into getting sorted (not my area of economic existence).

Not knowing the answer to my first question, here, there is one concrete thing I can state: Try to Avoid buying any Gear Twice (except for Tech Advances that you can't predict).

If you're doing Demo and Scratch Tx: an iMac G5 plus a 7200 rev LaCie stand-alone FireWire and about anything you want to plug into it. If you're looking toward the Pro Level of things, buy the Best the Budget allows, and Damn the Torpedoes.

Best,
rtc

PS Everyone will toss in more specific recommendations given an idea of exactly what you want the Rig to do for you.

That's funny, a friend of mine who works as a professional ProTools engineer (Son Of Dork, Foo Fighters, Natalie Imbruglia & Feeder, amongst others) says all the studios he works in only use Macs because they can maintain the systems themselves and they're far more stable.

That's what my friends in Feature Film Sound Production say, as well. But, there must be "something in the water" here in Boston with the Music Crowd - just Tons of PCs, (Not me, mind you). I changed over to Mac in 1990 and THAT is All She Wrote for this boy.

Say, maybe you can help this guy out, if he's aspiring to the Pro end of the spectrum.

Best Regards,
rtc

I figure if Macs are good enough for John McLaughlin to create music, they are good enough for me.
I've been using Macs for home use since 1990 anyway. :)

Logic is better than Pro Tools anyway.

that's an opinion, not a fact!

I've got both, and they are good for different things - all depends on your needs and how you work with music. Generally Logic is more advanced in the esoteric midi programming department, and ProTools more favourable for audio stuff - but at the end of the day you can do 95% of your main audio/midi work equally well on both platforms, question is how complicated it gets in the process.

One thing is certain, it takes a lot more work to get familiar withthe 'logic' of Logic than with ProTools. If I could only have one, I would surely choose ProTools, - I find it much more transparent and intuitive in use.

Only your own experience will tell which is better for you! Good Luck!
