Question for you Reason-ites out there... I have been using Reason for some of my Midi drumming needs and in the stock Factory ReFill there are a few cool kick and snare sounds that I really like. Is there a way to grab these sounds out of the ReFill as individual .wav (or .aiff) files? I can't figure it out. It seems that when I open up the refill I can use these files in the ReDrum module, but I can't get at them separately.
Do I have to do some kind of "unpackaging" thing with the ReFIll in my finder? Maybe right click on the ReFill and see if it can unstuff it? I'm at a loss here... I suppose I could make a recording of the individual hits and export them as .wav files, but I'd rather get at the original sounds if at all possible. Thanks to anyone who can answer this question for me.

![]() LegitRymes | January 30, 2006 1:56:23 PM heres what some else said and it sounds "LEGIT" earworm 05-27-2004, 08:37 AM i'"ve got a bunch of refills, real big ones, with neat samples and stuff, but i HATE using them.... first off all, you can't extract the samples from refills, so if you loose any of them (after a reformat or so) then you just lost the entire file... and if you got a 300MB refill, and only need ONE tiny sample from it, then you still have to store that goddamn refill on your harddisc no, i don't like it, i got my own huge collection of kick ass samples, and if i find a refill with some Kick Ass samples, then i just rip it (rip it: play that one sound in reason, and record it live in Cool edit or so....with a lill risc of loosing some soundquality i guess) conclusion: Seperate samples ROCK, refill are just TOO BIG...(they don't suck....just not handy to work with i think) Did This help? |
![]() Tiny_Man_Inside | January 30, 2006 2:44:20 PM yeah, I kinda figured that I would have to rip the samples that I like. I can do that no problem, but it would be nice to be able to use an individual sound file without having to take the time to set it up and record it individually in another application. |

January 30, 2006 3:50:33 PM Hi. The refills get "packed". You can download the packer program at the prop site. I don't use it for the very reason you mentioned. Once to pack samples and rex files into a refill you can't get em out as an individual file. So for myself. I have a lots of samples I've collected. I keep them in a folder that I labeld samples (drums) Samples(waveforms) etc. Because that way I can still get to them from any program I want to use them in. It makes no sense to me to have two files for the same samples. But the refills once packed can't be gotten to other than thru reason. Then you can do the long version of creating say an audio file of a rex loop and use that were you want.I also use recycle. You can use rex files in Stylus RMX. In some interesting ways so I use it mainly for that not much in reason.Lots of companies do the same thing as the refill thing. I can get to all my samples from Battery but not from Kontakt. You can't even open a refill unless you do it via reason.Years ago this was different but now everybody seems to use the packer tool so no go. ![]() DD SOT | January 30, 2006 4:29:28 PM You could make the Reason song length, like 1/4 bar long and load the hits you want into the first beat of every instrument track in redrum. then assing each redrum track(outputs 1-8 on back of redrum) to a seperate mixer channel... then solo each channel and export song (repeat for other channels). You should get a short Aiff file that contains each single hit. You can convert to wav if required, using sound convertor. just set up paramaters in sound convertor and drop all the files you want to convert and wolaa! shouldnt take more than 15 minutes |
![]() Tiny_Man_Inside | January 30, 2006 4:57:05 PM Thanks for trying to help guys. I appreciate it. DD SOT - I'm probably going to use the strategy that you outlined, only I'll do it by rewiring Reason with ProTools, as I am more familiar with PT than anything else. |
January 30, 2006 5:01:54 PM Hi. So in pro-tools you can record in realtime the rewired sound? And not have to wait til you do a mix? I can record it in Live but not in Logic in realtime. I need to do a bounce in Logic and import it as an audio track.Live is a lot more realtime for audio stuff. Taylor
![]() Tiny_Man_Inside | January 30, 2006 5:22:01 PM Yeah, Taylor, you can record Rewired Apps in realtime in ProTools. Very cool feature. Basically you start with a midi track, output to an Aux track that has Reason inserted it on it, then send that into an audio track to record your stuff in. Hit record-enable on the audio track, press play and ProTools will play your midi through the rewire and record it in real time. Great for coming up with drums loops - for example I have ReDrum as my insert and write out the drum track in midi, then record it. I might have some of the routing I detailed above mixed up (I always have to tinker a bit to remember how to set it up), but if you want more details, I can forward them to you. If you want to get super fancy, you can actually insert multiple instances of the ReDrum insert and record each of the drum parts separately, which is great for mixing purposes. I just started working on this aspect and am super excited to be able to mix and process each track individually ( a touch of overdrive on the snare, a nice plate reverb on the hats....) Malachai |
January 31, 2006 2:54:50 AM Cool. I do that with Live5. It is a very cool feature that Logic lacks. Taylor
