A good ground game's in order here, along with, of course, a strong defense. Just keep moving the chains...
Losing is not an option...

You're confused... - I wouldn't have caught the part about the plethora of dueling gods if you hadn't called it out, Bill. I was too busy being blown away by the idea that this man thought that he should remind his dear lord, that his reputation was on the line. Apparently the almighty gets a little forgetful at times. And the biggie, it seems that mister god can be manipulated too. Well..., just the right tonal inflection needs to host your mightier words, I'm sure... The sad part is the number of youngsters in the audience who are likely to be learning that, "this is how you do it"... Jesus! I really mean it this time... Macca |
![]() drakonis | October 12, 2008 9:45:51 PM and of course, if anybody actually READ the bible, I mean not even closely, it specifically states that ALL man-made political hierarchies are corrupt and wrong, and only God's dominion matters... so... a man is asking God to bless his political campaign? Perhaps somebody needs a bit of refresher-reading in the Good Book? No? OK, carry on then... no more to see here. ttfn, Drakonis... sigh |
![]() futzpucker | October 12, 2008 10:01:32 PM That's exactly what struck me the hardest, too, Dion. A mortal man believes he needs to remind God Almighty, The Creator Of The Universe And All That Exists Therein, that He needs to guard His reputation. "I do?" said God. "That's right! I do! Why do I always forget to guard my reputation? Shucks. Thanks, dude." Um, like, wow times infinity... The Reverend needs to look up the word "anthropomorphizing" (as if that would do any good). He also needs to know that God is not, in the approximate words of the great theologian, Don Rickles, a guy with with a stick and some sheep, who has a beard and wears a white robe with a big "G" on the pocket. So, this Reverend is America's version of a Holy Man? Does this not cause a person to shudder ever so slightly? |

OK, carry on then... no more to see here. ttfn, Drakonis... sigh As someone who has read the Qur'an, the Bible, and the Torah, even I, mere mortal that I am, see the point that is raised consistently in all three: God's will is paramount; it is unknowable by the finite capacities of the human intellect, and it is not subject to prior express written consent by humans. Most importantly, God does not choose to stand behind political hierarchies- all the machinations of man are inferior by comparison. You don't even need to read the books closely to see that what this preacher is saying is nonsense of the highest order. I'm not a Christian myself, so I don't want to sound to be ridiculing the beliefs sincerely held by some, but the ultra-right-wing-evangelical movement in America scares the hell out of me. |
![]() guitapick | October 13, 2008 8:39:04 AM This, to me, is the essence of religious abuse. It's how holy wars are and have been started and perpetuated throughout history. "My God's better than YOUR God"! "Crush the infidels"! People's need to always be "right". For an adult to do it so fervently, and in front of children who will internalize and continue it is beyond appalling. Why doesn't he ask for an ice cream cone with one of Ben and Jerry's retired flavors while he's at it? And reprimand God for allowing that flavor to be retired in the first place? |
![]() Repulsive_Landlord | October 13, 2008 8:39:39 AM I think that was against the law, no less - it has something to do with tax exemption. I saw a report that there are some other "pastors" planning on supporting their political candidate from behind the pulpit this election year. This kind of behavior and talk is right up there with the blatant slander and bigotry preached by Jeremiah Wright. My dad was a pastor and a missionary. He passed away in 2000. Never did he utter such blasphemy or attempt to misuse his calling in life to propagate such self serving balderdash, but only to teach the Bible and to serve and help others to believe in Christ as their savior - that's what he believed in. He asked nothing in return. Even though I didn't follow in his footsteps and don't attend church myself, I remain amazed at his love for the Lord even as the prostate cancer spread throughout his body and he died a very miserably painful death. Folks, Christian and other religious leaders are not all like this. This type of material serves only as a slap in the face to those whom have given their lives to a seemingly just cause. |

Of course you are correct. The increasing infiltration of government by people like this is very disturbing.Religion can be a very positive thing but way too many people are using it to indoctrinate. |
![]() pablatone | October 13, 2008 9:58:09 AM The entire old testament is about God' dealing with one specific people, the Jews, and he did absolutely favor them over all the other nations. There are several places in Psalms I believe it is, where God is entreated to act "for his namesake" in other words for his reputation. There are reasons why such a statement would be made, I won't go into that right now, but praying like that is not unprecedented. Both old and new testaments talk about other gods, but say there is only one true God. I'm not sure about other religions but, the Bible is emphatic that those who would follow God should use all their heart, mind, spirit, and strength to know him and his will. We may not be able to fully comprehend God, but there is a lot about him we can know and we are responsible for that. I've never completely understood the whole concept of prayer, but I do know that God will do the exact right thing to accomplish his will in this world, and he asks us to join in through prayer, (for one thing) so we pray with the best of our ability and sometimes we pray right and sometimes we pray wrong. |
