You know, reading the various discussions on the voting system, commenting (the hows and wherefores) has gotten me to thinking. There are probably many different reasons why people create music and post it here at MJ. Those reasons, to a degree, underly how different members come down on the good, better, and best of these issues. I tend to think that why one makes music has a bit to do with how one looks at voting, comments, and Favorites and their relative importance. No great insight here, for sure. But... why do I make music and post it? The answer to that is why I am here. Like all of us, I love music.

If I can create a song (no matter how imperfectly) and post it, and that song brings a smile, creates a good feeling, brings a touch of melancholy, challenges the listener with the lyrics, causes someone to tap their foot, or brings a few people together to enjoy the music making experience... well then, mission accomplished. Do I want to get better? Sure. But limited time, limited space, limited funds, and more important things than music govern the importance of that desire for improvement (both musically and production-wise). It sort of gets down to just hopefully bringing a moment of listening pleasure to someone.

So how does that affect my view on voting, comments, etc.? Well, it doesn't much matter what I think, really. The main thing for me is being able to put up a studio-lite, amateur performance of sorts in hopes that some in the MJ audience enjoy it.

Back to work now.... maybe I'll extend my remarks later.

cheers

Years ago, when I was alone, I had my guitar. When I got home from work, I played. I never learned speed or high end playing. But I learned how to believe in my fingers as they worked those metal strings. Some of the scrub guitars I owned kept in tune for only a few minutes. That's when I learned to listen beyond what my intellect was telling me.

Since then, I've discovered that making music is a panacea for me. In fact, I might just cut out from here and get some music going right now!

Peace!

So very true brother!

...and now I might as well just come clean and admit it:

I make and post music so that I can be a legend in my own mind! Ha ha...

Peace!

for me it's real nice to have some one actually hear the stuff I do. I don't play out but I can't help but write. So when anybody more than my wife and cats hear those songs, it just makes me happy. I don't even mind the bombing so much.

I make music because it's still against the law to kill people *NOT*

I was talking to pink and fluffy Caroline today and I told her what makes ME happy...all I ever wanted to do w/ my music and my humor is to make at least one person laugh and happy...if I have made one person laugh and happy, then I think have done my "job"....It brings me great joy when I see a smile or hear a laugh.

when I make lots of people smile and laugh, AND curse their minds w/ a catchy riff or beat, then I KNOW I have done my "job"

and since my professional career as a graphic design director is rather stressful with b*tchy customers and tight deadlines, music is my outlet, and oh how I would love to be in a band again, but right now, I can't...so I post here, get very positive and constructive feedback...and the occasional smile and laugh...

Well, it is just music, but I do feel that this crowd has a lot of entertaining and teaching to do in the years to come. Music is a good tool for laughing, crying, teaching and learning. It has brought me out of my shell. You should see the social justice thought waves which now emanate from my forehead. MacJams has grown my temporal lobes!

Watch for "Lighten Up Now" and "Stack Come Down" -- coming soon to MacJams. Not in stores everywhere. Not on RCA Victor Records. Not on America's Got Forklifts."

I make music because I believe somewhere deep inside me is the perfect, indelible melody.

Don`t know if I`ll ever find it but it sure is fun looking for it.

I make music because I am a creator. If I'm not creating music, then I'm creating noise. If I'm not creating noise then I am wishing I was creating noise, or music, or art, or photography, or writing lyrics, or working on a website, or any number of other things that involves starting with a blank canvas, or computer screen, or notebook, and populating the emptiness with somethingness. Creating music though is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding.

I tip my hat to all of the creators out there in MacJam land and beyond!

i would rather create (compose and record) music more than any other activity. (aside from the obvious necessities.) people often ask me why i don't read, or why i'd rather stay home and play music than go out and watch a movie?

well, nobody has ever told me "man, the way you read that book - it inspired me!" or "wow, i totally connected with the way you watched that movie - it made me cry!"

certainly people can connect with movies, books and songs, but i am addicted to trying to create/establish that connection. perhaps it's a little selfish, but its the same reason directors direct movies, or writers write books.

i'm a bit of a closed off person, emotionally speaking, even to those close to me. music allows me to express and share my innermost feelings... even with perfect strangers. and music is a universal language, so people usually get it... where feelings expressed in real life are often misinterpreted.

am i getting too deep here? i should probably return to my usual snappy, funny self. :)

Good question.
I make music because in doing so I become part of some magic act that flows through me and creates something that is truly beyond my modest abilities. I'm convinced that there is a creative energy that flows and snaps all around us - and that some of us tap into it through painting, some through dance, and I just happen to do it through music.
Finding this connection and hearing the result is incredibly exciting for me because I really can't explain it but I do trust it. I know this is sounding very new agey spiritual - but for me making music is an act of faith.

I do it for love. I was doing it long before I even knew about sites like MacJams.

There is something indescribable about creating a song. When that last tweak is done, and I play the whole song from the top, there is this certain moment of pure pleasure. There are no words for that. If it doesn't happen, then I'm not really done, and I keep at it or else set it aside for awhile. That "certain moment" is highly addictive.

Smokey... I love your post, especially the last sentence "That "certain moment" is highly addictive."
